Eric is a conscientious and pleasant person in nature to deal with. I have found him professional and highly skilled. I had described the issues I was having prior to his arrival and planned on a certain scope of work to be done. After Eric reviewed the situation I had, he was honest about not feeling the need to replace something that didn't really need replacing. Not many contractors would reveal that and just replace to charge more. We had a glitch or two with scheduling and timing of appointments, but we worked it out. Eric has integrity and does the right thing. I will definitely hire Quality Repair Services again.

We have been putting off having our gutters cleaned for years. Not only that but we didn't know a reputable contractor to perform that service. I found Thumbtack, and received 5 quotes with reviews. Stephen McKenna replied within hours with a reasonable quote and assured me that he would be able to do the job by the end of the week. I was delighted, especially because it is December and I thought it was too late. I gave him the chance to change his quote because our house is big, but he did not. He came when he said, cleaned up the area to perfection, and even emailed me before and after pictures of my gutters. Stephen McKenna does all types of home improvement work; I would hire him again and recommend him without hesitation. GS-Seekonk

Everything you could ask for and more! I usually never write reviews, but when it comes to hiring people and it companies to do work I felt important to share. We all know how difficult it is to find a good contractor. Elsayed came out on a Sunday and worked tirelessly until the job was done. Installed 3 toilets, dishwasher, garbage disposal, 2 faucet fixtures. Also corrected numerous plumbing issues in the process. From start to finish he let me know what was going on every step of the way. His recommendations were spot on as he came across other issues throughout the project. I always felt confident everything would get done right and did it ever! Never strayed from the up front and honest pricing. I’ve already rehired Elsayed to do more work in my home as OSA is a full service general contractor. Hire with absolute confidence!!!

Bobby was great. This was our first time using him and his others reviews held true. He communicated well with his arrival time, when the job took a twist he was knowledgeable and repaired a mistake left by another contractor that could have been dangerous. He went and got the part and stayed true to his quote. We will be hiring Bobby for other jobs in the future for sure!

Dan was excellent. Correctly diagnosed the real problem where another contractor diagnosed another problem for $1,600 more. He also went above the call of duty to fit me in an already busy schedule.

I had Mark work on both of my homes. His work was very professional. A friend of mine (a general contractor), and several other people asked me who I had install my outdoor shower on my Cape home, as they thought it "looked great". His prices are very fair and I would highly recommend him.

David of United Sewer & Drain was great all the way around! He responded quickly to my request on Thumbtack and agreed to come to my home the next day which was a Sunday afternoon. He arrived exactly at the scheduled time and went to work on my drain problem. He took the time to do the job right and had my kitchen drain fully operational in a short amount of time. He was even able to replace the disposal gasket and drain cover. David charged me what he had estimated which I feel was very fair. I would hire David again and highly recommend him to the Thumbtack community.

There’s nothing sexy about a blocked sewer, but when you need it fixed, Danny from Elite Drains is the guy you want to call. He came out to my house behind 2 different drain companies that couldn’t figure the problem out; had it diagnosed and repaired in a few hours. Been trouble free ever since. I appreciated his service so much that that I decided to write a review! I highly recommend Elite Drains.

There is nothing that I can say that could adequately say how amazing an experience this was. From the minute Steve answered with a quote right up til today when he came, he never tried to embellish or find things wrong that weren’t. What was supposed to be a simple leak, which turned into a split drain and sewer pipe, he just kept going until the entire thing was fixed and fixed correctly!! Even having to go into the basement and fix/replace the pipe that carried the water to the sewer, he just kept going right along as if it was just a routine thing. I can’t say thank you enough to him for the hard and good work that he did and I definitely will be using you in the future for other things no matter how big or small!!! Thank you so much!!!

Gerry and his brother Mike have done an excellent job at our home last week. We had to address water leaks and rusted waterlines in three toilets. Gerry communicated well about the project, estimation, parts and pricing. Gerry listened to everything I had to say about the plumbing issues in our home and gave me ideas and options to fix the issue with appropriate parts. He allowed me to buy the parts myself. On the day of the install, Gerry and his brother took extra care to do the project with best quality and spent time to make sure that there are no more water leaks in our pipes after the work. Mike installed two water hammers for the washing machine by doing some copper pipe work and tested well after the installation to ensure that the washer is working fine and there is no more sounds coming from the pipes. Mike also helped us to stabilize the washer by adjusting the leveling screws. They used necessary accessories to keep the workplace clean and after the project, left no trace of any residue. Upon my request, they wore booties to avoid walking with boots on our carpets. I greatly appreciate their professional work ethic and quality of work. I strongly recommend them for any plumbing work in your home based on what I saw. It is rare to find quality contractors. When you do find one support them. All the best and have a great day. -Satheesh Donthy, Chelmsford, MA 01824

Cliff added an addition to my home, complete with a hallway and a half bathroom. Cliff and his team were nothing less than professional in every aspect of the job. They were very courteous of the fact I was 9 months pregnant, as well as having a newborn in the house (while the job was being done I had a baby) he was very respecting of keeping the noise, and mess, down as much as they could! Cliff gave me everything I was looking for in my master room, and more. They cleaned uo every mess that was made during and after construction. I would recommend him to anyone looking to have work done on their home, no matter what it is Cliff is your guy!

Thiego and his team removed our current cabinets, countertop and appliances. They assembled IKEA cabinets and installed them. They installed a new quartz counter and a subway tile backsplash. They put our new appliances in place, and painted. They did a great job. At the end of the job he had a house cleaner come and clean the house. This was our biggest job with contractors. It was very hard to be without a kitchen for 3 weeks, but it was worth the wait.

Azat is incredible. Not only does he have great attention to detail and does high quality work, he works like a man on a mission. He worked long days (he even worked on a snow day when most of the city didn't) and well into the evening in order to get the job done. We worked well with other contractors to design some aspects and troubleshoot issues. Trust me, hire this guy - there is no better.

Very pleased with Bob and his crew. After two years of being jerked around by various contractors and friends who said they could "easily do this" we finally found RM Paolino Construction. Bob met with us on a Saturday and gave us a detailed estimate with some great cost-saving design changes for our kitchen and bathroom. We signed a contract that following Friday and by Monday morning our bathroom was gutted and on its way. What a relief it's been to deal with a real contractor after all time we wasted with other so called "professionals". Bob has kept us up to speed every step of the way and the bathroom looks great. Can't wait for kitchen to start. Highly recommend RM Construction to anyone looking for a professional, full service contractor who won't give you the run around!

George responded right away to my request. He called when he was on his way (which I really appreciate as most contractors don't). He was very professional, on time, did the job very well and pricing was very fair. We would hire him again for any further jobs we might have and will definitely recommend him to family and friends!!

I sent the request through Thumbtack for help with two small projects, expecting to be put in line behind a backlog of customers for at least several days, as small jobs like mine are often not treated with high priority. I was so pleasantly surprised to hear back within a few hours, and had the appointment booked right away that day! The plumbers showed up early (a complete miracle in my long years of experience with contractors) got right to work, had all the parts they needed, and even made several helpful suggestions that made the project even better than expected. I couldn't be happier with the service from Hilliard. Many thanks for providing exactly what I needed, so I could finish the next steps of this project!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
