First, as I was trained as a medical doctor, let me say that I have always been aware that there are dimensions of healing that are not bound by traditional western medicine. In my experience with Eric Tackeff, he was professional, courteous, and seemed centered and focused in the session. I liked the setting of his office. I don't remember how long the session was; time seems irrelevant in that context. In experiencing the healing with Eric, he emanated what felt, with my eyes closed, like a penetrating light. My mind became quiet, and I felt washed by waves of energy. I became relaxed, with a deep sense of receiving. After the session, I felt subtle yet durable effects. In writing this, I can again evoke the experience, as if Eric showed me where a resource was as it flowed through him. Those who come expecting a specific prescription or instruction may be surprised, for the healing is not of the prescriptive kind. It draws from deeper sources, and I recommend him to anyone seeking to open to those sources as a path to wholeness.

I met Caroline Ruderman in Hudson, NY. I am always looking for ways to take care of myself without the use of meds or doctors. Holistic healing is for me! My first Reiki session was with Caroline and it was amazing. I made one more visit to her, and then asked if she would teach me. My daughter and I took Reiki 1 and our Masters class with her and again, got so much out of it! She is truly dedicated to this spiritual life she lives. Would recommend her to anyone who wants to experience this type of healing, or those who want to become a practitioner.

Four years ago I had a really bad bout of bronchitis and painful ear infections. Four doses of antibiotics weren’t doing anything to bring my heath back. I felt prematurely old and completely run down. I was aware of Osa’s expertise with Tibetan Medicine and Ayurveda but just didn’t think that these traditional practices and knowledge would be more helpful than what “Western Medicine” could offer. But I had reached rock bottom and was open to any suggestions Osa could offer. She immediately set about recommending a course of action to build up my depleted immune system and energy. It took a month, but I was back to my normal self. Over the next few years, with Osa’s help, I have learned how to care for imbalances in my health, understand my pitta-dominant dosha, the value of periodic cleanses, and benefited greatly from herbs and medications that address the cause of health problems rather than just covering up symptoms. Osa knows how to listen, ask good questions, and has a wide range of resources to back up her advice and “prescriptions” (just wish they were in an easy single capsule form!). She’s always just an email or skype call away, kinda like having your own private medic! - R. Montero

Abi'l-Khayr is highly skilled and intuitive in his Myofascial work. His studio is warm, comfortable and inviting. Abi'l-Khayr has done wonders to relieve the pain and tension that I have in my neck and shoulders due to an accident years ago. I especially appreciate that each time I see him, he takes the time to reassess my needs and talk with me about what might be happening in my body. I highly recommend Myofascial bodywork with Abi'l-Khayr!

I was stressed from multiple caregiving responsibilities when I went for a coaching and Reiki session with Joan. Her background and skills make her a "smart listener," with a genuine desire to help each individual find practices that fit their lives and needs. I felt very supported by Joan's suggestions (and she gave me some great recipes!), and rejuvenated by the Reiki. If you are looking for someone with a gentle, holistic approach, Joan is the real thing!

I went for one ear acupuncture treatment to try and help with painful and heavy periods. The three months following my treatment were the lightest and easiest I had in the three years prior! I plan on going back for another treatment. I was a little embarrassed to discuss this issue with Dr. Resnick, but he was very compassionate and understanding.

I originally tried accupuncture for my lower back pain, but quickly learned everything improved! Unlike western medicine where treatment may wait for test results and/or require powerful (and dangerous) prescriptions, accupuncture gives immediate results. Becky is a caring and experienced practitioner who will listen to your concerns and symptoms and treat them right away...I felt greatly improved after only one visit! It's the best I've felt in years!

Amber is a natural healer and care taker. She has always had strong intuition in regard to the people around her, and has now complimented that with powerful Reiki training. Her approach is equal parts academic and spiritual. Prior to my first treatment she made sure I understood what we were about to do, and why. She explained the seven chakras of the body, and how each related to my day-to-day existence. The more informed I became, the more clear it was that Reiki -- which literally means “God’s Wisdom” or “Higher Power” meeting “Life Force Energy”-- is not an obscure, new-age concept, but a proven alternative medicine we should all practice. Developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist, Reiki aims to heal by establishing balance. We are the sum of our parts, if we do not deal with the negative emotions and situations we encounter then they fester within us, creating emotional and physical distress. By seeking the help of trained Reiki specialist, and practicing meditation and affirmative thinking, patients can identify and release those destructive forces. I have seen and felt significant changes in my body and state of mind since I began seeking Amber’s help. I have lost weight, my insomnia has weakened, my surgically-repaired knee is recovering much more quickly, and I feel more confident, happy and secure in my life in general. Furthermore, the holistic approach of Reiki has felt like a natural evolution of my strong catholic faith, rather than a contrast to it. I would recommend it, and Amber, to anyone seeking an elevated life experience.

What is incredible about Bri and her work is how devoted she is to me and my health. She gives so much beyond my expectations. Her caring and empathy are so helpful to me as I struggle to implement more healthy patterns and try to understand whole foods and herbs that are good for me. She is quite clear about what foods, herbs, and next steps I need - she is not afraid to step in! That strength and clarity are helpful to me yet she is so gentle in her approach. The part I did not expect is her counseling on my life - the play of how my paradigms and thinking (and feelings!) play in my changing my life. I felt she was my therapist - in the best way. So to answer the question above: work quality, professionalism, responsiveness, value, and punctuality were all excellent. I also appreciate the consistency of her program - every other week - not too much for my schedule but enough for me make changes and feel the support. She also contacts me in between with a lot of support.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

    • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
    • Nutritional medicine
    • Botanical medicine
    • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
    • Hygiene
    • Counseling
    • Minor surgery
    • Homeopathy
    • Acupuncture
    • Intravenous and injection therapy
    • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

    Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

    Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

    • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
      • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
    • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
      • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
      • Do I need a referral?
      • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
      • What will the co-pay be?
      • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
    • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
