Dan responded immediately to my service request and arrived within a couple of hours which is outstanding for HVAC professionals. I usually have to wait for a few days especially during hot weather. He quickly diagnosed what turned out to be a complicated/non-routine problem. The repair was done with a fair price, explained well, and overall I could not be more satisfied. Do not hesitate to hire Dan Farrell- you'll be very happy with his professionalism and quality of work.

Our heat pump broke down so we called a company out to take a look then they told me they can fix but the cost would be so high that they recommend that I should consider a new heat pump so I told them I will think about it . So I went on Thumbtack for a second opinion I got in contact with Remedy Cooling and Heating Remy came take a look at my heat pump run some diognostic told me that the heat pump need freion and one welding he told me what it would cost, how long the work would take , very upfront and honest very hard to find in these days . Remy did not charge me to come out and check on my heat pump and run diognostic on the unit very honest. All I can say from now and for the foreseeable future he is my go to HVAC contractor . Mark W

Very consultative and supportive. Great recommendations for completely converting HVAC system throughout an antique home (circa 1862). Included a quality team of vendors to support the efforts, ie. duct work, electrician and general carpenter.

These guys are great! Showed up same day as requested and allowed me to observe their work on our HVAC. I've had some bad experience with another company and wanted to try to learn myself so I can be more educated with our units. Within 10 minutes, they found the problem, fixed it and even offered to come back on short notice should the issue re-surface. Pricing is a premium to other vendors on TT ($110 vs $80 hr) , but WELL worth it! Will 100% be using these guys in future for HVAC & Boiler needs.

Mike Drohan was hired to fix a problem with a new (3 wk. old) central AC that the installation contractors failed to diagnose and fix despite me having patience, tolerating poor excuses and not returning my phone calls and texts over a 2 week period of time. Despite the very bad experience with other licensed HVAC contractors, I had to trust someone to "right the wrongs" of the installers and get my new central AC up and running the way it should. So...........I hired Mike. He showed up a day after we spoke when he said he would. After patiently listening to my experience and concerns, he quickly diagnosed the problem, made the required adjustments and repairs and had my new system up and running and operating the way it should....at a very fair and reasonable price. I found Mike to be responsive, a very good listener, patient and understanding, highly skilled and competent, friendly & engaging. I will hire him again in a heartbeat if need be and highly recommend him without reservation.

Lewis is very knowledgeable and friendly, explaining my issue was quick and easy. He was extremely responsive to any communication and messages through the Thumbtack app. In addition his communication with regard to setting up an appointment and keeping me informed was first class. He worked quickly efficiently to diagnose the cause of the issue(s) we had with our HVAC system and immediately worked to fix them. Our system needs some replacement parts which he will order and come and fit at a later date. He gave great advice on how to avoid issues going forward and offered a very reasonable maintenance plan for us to consider. I am extremely happy with the service received from Lewis and Northshore HVAC services.

He is the best at what he does and you will not find a nicer guy anywhere! Totally responsive, honest, and will go above and beyond for his customers. He even brought his own air conditioners from home when one of our residents' system needed to be replaced.

I felt that Brandon was honest. As a lay person, I'm at the mercy of a technician or contractor and believe many blow up the charges and the work that needs to be done to inflate their price. He explained what needed to be done and why. Brandon was also very personable. He is now on my referral list should anyone need an hvac. Brandon is not making a fast buck but he is making life long clients.

My experience with NetZero was FANTASTIC. My furnace broke and I had no heat. NetZero was recommended by a friend. I called and they came out immediately. After assessing the problem we talked about the most cost effective options. We decided to fix current furnace. They came out the next day after finding the part (furnace is more that 20 years old) and stayed until everything was working properly. The staff was very patient and professional with all my questions. Their prices are lower or in line with other companies. I am so satisfied I have signed up for their maintenance agreement and made appointment for next fall to have my old furnace replaced. You will not be sorry using NetZero for all your HVAC needs.

He was efficient, clean, thorough, professional, and very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend including him among the hvac contractors you consider for your work. He’s “into” what he does, and cares about the product of his work. We were very happy with Chris as our choice.

Overall, this was a most positive experience. He did the HVAC work on a historic house owned by a volunteer organization. We had to have asbestos removed in a short time frame and then he showed up the next day with new heating ducts. It was a pleasure to work I with him and we liked that he was an independent contractor. He did some pretty difficult work, installing in ancient crawl spaces, and did a wonderful job. He took the needs of our organization into account and treated us with respect and fairness. He is an experienced professional who more than lived up to our expectations. Also, did work in a timely manner and was most reliable.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
