Very friendly movers. They were timely and efficient. Helped with everything I needed and made sure to get it done as quickly as possible. I just would suggest that they be more careful while loading the truck, some of my things came back broke from being squashed from heavier items they placed on top. Overall, good job and pleased.

Born to Move was the first company who contacted me for my move. Alex was very responsive and helpful with describing the process. We decided to go with 2 movers team as it seemed like the best fit for my family. Guys arrived on time and gave me an update on where they during their way to us. They worked with a good pace. All my furniture including even the smallest pieces was wrapped in blankets and plastic. I do highly recommend this team as on of the best I met so far in Boston.

We hired Eric to move us out of Quincy to South Boston. Both apartments were in homes built in the early 1900's so anyone from Boston would know staircases are very narrow which makes moving very difficult. Other movers were hired by a roommate and Eric assisted them in moving a truck load of boxes and furniture some of which were quite large to a third floor apartment. Eric charges 1/2 of what the other movers charged and when they doubted furniture would make it up the staircase he went for it and made it work ! Limited closet space in old homes made it necessary for an armoire for my clothes. I would highly recommend Eric and wouldn't hesitate to hire him again. We need some work done on our home and Eric is coming by to give us a quote and I'm confident the outcome will be just as good, and he is very pleasant to work with as well.

We had five movers (Leandro, Alfredo, Oscar, Jesus, Ran) and two 26 foot trucks to move a three level, 2 bedroom town house and a jam packed 10x30ft. storage unit. They were able to fit all of the contents unlike our previous move, where we ended up taking several car loads after the movers left because there was no more room on the truck. They arrived during the two hour window they specified. All of the movers worked very hard and efficiently even in 90 degree heat. They were sure to identify all previously damage on furniture and items so we were aware and knew it was preexisting. All of the workers were careful and professional. I believe our total cost came in just below or right about what we we're quoted. Their time estimation was right on! We were very pleased with the speed and overall quality of the move, I do not think anything was damaged. My only complaint is that a number of boxes did not end up in the right rooms even though most rooms and boxes were labeled. The furniture and some other larger items were not left in the right places. This was partially my inexperience in having a moving crew. I was out at the truck directing where to bring things. I needed someone inside to give specific instructions to the movers for furniture placement and where to create box piles. I did give specific instructions on a few items and it was lost in translation. (For example, I asked that the gas grill be left on the stones at the edge on the deck. Instead, they put it on the deck.) This was not a huge problem as we can move things around but it would have been nice to not have to do a whole lot of rearranging. I would hire them again but would know more how to direct them to get even better end results.

This was my first experience dealing with movers. Step By Step was very professional. Although I was concerned about the ability to move my belongings with ease due to the harsh weather conditions they did not let the weather impede their work. I would recommend Step By Step if you want a positive experience with quality, professionalism, value, quick response time, and punctuality.

We were moving from out of state to Rhode Island and I found K.J. Junk and Hauling here. Tony responded right away, was professional and prompt. It was a challenge to wrangle movers to unload a POD while I was still out of state and Tony just simply got the job done right which I really appreciate. Would def hire them again!

Two movers were on time and professional unloading our two 16-foot storage units and also packing, moving, and unpacking an apartment in the city. They were patient and considerate as we tried to figure out what rooms everything should be placed in. They moved heavy furniture delicately and without breaking a sweat. They worked tirelessly from 8am-6:30pm. Choose these guys for your next move, you won’t regret it!

From the initial correspondence with inquiries to the final delivery EVERYTHING done by Smart Penny Moving was thoroughly professional. Emails/phone calls about charges were handled promptly and courteously. The execution of the actual move was flawless. I had a spice rack with tiny glass bottles that was a last minute thought and I asked if that could be included in one of the boxes. Much to my surprise when I unpacked at our destination, EACH bottle had been wrapped individually by the movers. Unfortunately it rained the actual day of the move and each and every time the men walked in they wiped their feet on the tarp they had put down. I can't get my own family to do that when they aren't balancing large, unwieldy and heavy pieces of furniture!. I unhesitatingly endorse this company. Professional, courteous, cost efficient. What more can a person ask for?!?!?

Alex, Dimitry, and Eugene were essential to our move. They were communicative and arrived promptly and helped us figure out the best plan. They were confident and competent, clearly experienced. That calmed us - we handed everything over to them, and they took excellent care of us and our belongings and were respectful of our new and old homes. Very efficient. Friendly. Helpful. Amazing price for stellar service. We'll absolutely call them next time movers are needed. Thank you!

I never thought I would say this about moving, but this was a great experience! The movers called me when they were leaving the warehouse to give me a heads up, were extremely careful with my belongings, and so nice and friendly to boot! And all this came at an amazing price - having used other, larger companies in the past, I was SHOCKED (in a good way) when they told me how much it was. Flash was fantastic all around. I will definitely be using them again and recommending them to all of my friends!

After failing to hear back from a number of other contractors, I responded to a quote and was immediately engaged in a simple conversation resulting in scheduling a move. They didn’t need an itemized list like other movers, which I found helpful. The two movers were incredibly hard working, efficient, careful and courteous. They moved my 1 bedroom apartment in under 4 hrs w/ 15 mile travel time included. Nothing was damaged in the process, and I received a nice thank note for hiring them. With my experience, I wouldn’t bother contacting other movers that Thumbtack recommend, and just go straight to these guys. It’ll save you the headache and stress about not knowing if you’re going to get your move arranged in time and for an economical cost. Thanks Stanley and Ello! —Ryan

Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.
