I contacted Jennifer because my cockapoo Teddy was having a hard time adjusting to our new home and was very unwelcoming when any guests would come visit. I was starting to have major anxiety at just the thought of guests coming to the door and knew something needed to be done. Jennifer came to my home and with a few tricks and the purchase of a gentle leader, Teddy is doing so much better with visitors! He has also started to learn simple commands such as "come" and "stay" and seems to be adjusting so much better to our new home. I would highly recommend Jennifer to anyone who needs some help training their dog!!!

Theresa is doing great job on training my dog. She really loves dog. I can tell that she is fully engaged in training dogs. She treats dog as her little baby. I am very glad to have Theresa as my dog's trainer. She is patient and responsible. Both of I and my dog have learned a lot from her. Sprite learned to sit, down, and leave things. She becomes a polite puppy and starts to listen to my instruction. Although sometimes she is still a little bit hard to control, she had learned more that I have expected. I would like to keep touch with Theresa and let her teach Sprite more lessons. I am very appreciate for what Theresa have done.

I took Laila, my 10 week old Corgi, to Lisa to do her puppy program. Lisa was extremely friendly, helpful and informative. 8 to 12 weeks is a critical time in puppy development. The things they experience during this time, and how they experience them, shape their behaviors and attitudes as adults. Lisa used her expertise to facilitate many of these experiences in a constructive manner. Laila furthered her understanding of how to interact with other dogs appropriately and was encouraged to explore her environment and respond to new experiences with bravery. Laila was also started on a rigid feeding and bathroom schedule which was then provided to me in writing with great detail. A consistent schedule is essential for instilling house breaking habits in dogs. Lisa's experience and expertise is extensive and readily apparent. She was more than happy to answer all of my questions both during the program and in the time that has elapsed since it's completion. Laila has had minor behavioral set backs, and Lisa was there to walk me through corrective actions. Laila is now 16 weeks old and is doing great! I was able to use the things Lisa taught me to effectively continue Lailas training. The most important thing Lisa helped me understand is the way dogs think and learn. Understanding the way dogs learn is the difference between having a recipe and having a working knowledge. If this sounds like something your dog needs, I highly recommend that you contact Lisa because I was thoroughly satisfied with my experience.

Sandy led the second round of training for my 2-year old rescue dog. Our first training class offered at a major pet retail chain was OK, but the training was a little disorganized. Sandy corrected the earlier training, offering really practical and helpful advice for me to work with my dog. Each training lesson built on the previous one, so the learning was reinforced. And best of all, Sandy really loves her job and her students! (And my dog is always happy when he sees her!) I recommend Sandy highly!

I was in desperate need of help because my two year old Labrador became aggressive over food, toys, and my attention. I had to do something and something fast. I called K9 academy and was in utter shock at how awesome they are! The trainer hung up the phone with me and came right to us to help us. I’m overjoyed with the fact that my dog Whiskey has been doing this for five days and I have a different dog already. I’m so excited for the process to continue and would recommend K9 Academy to anyone and everyone!

Ashley does a great job with both the dogs and the owners. I am amazed at how my dog has learned with her and I have learned too! I am on my 4th class with her and I would highly recommend her to anyone. She has an amazing ability to balance training the dog with encouraging and teaching the humans at the same time!

T&J’s K9 Academy has been great to us. We were lucky enough to be the new home for our wonderful dog Tito. Tito’s previous owners couldn’t keep him and needed help finding him a new home. It turned out to be a perfect fit for us. We took Tito in and he immediately became best friends with our other dog. We had a few issues with Tito listening to certain commands from us. Joe at T&J’s K9 academy was more than helpful with some extra training. He explained that it’s a completely new environment for him and that it would take a little work to teach him. He helped us the entire way giving us tips to help us train him. We love Tito and couldn’t be happier with how things turned out!

Amazing!! I couldn't be happier with the training my two shepherds recieved. They are wonderful off leash, I can bring them anywhere! I get compliments on how well they are trained all the time. If you want high quality training of your dog you've found the perfect place. I would and will take all my future dogs here. Titan (17 months when trained) and Layla (7 months when trained) are still well behaved and listen. Yet act like dogs, they still have their own personalities, that was no broken from them in training as some other trainers have done.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
