Cesar was very professional, Luca Lima's quote was very fair and the work was excellent! They installed 2 hardwood floors and removed old carpeting and finished the job in 2 days as quoted. They left the rooms clean and even helped me move other furniture around the house! They are very personable, trustworthy and hard-working, really I can't say enough about how pleased I am! I highly recommend Luca Lima.

Ed and the guys came to my house to check out my porch that needed to be painted. While they were there I showed Ed a couple more projects I had (painting the basement and power washing/painting my garage). Ed and the guys at ER took on all three jobs and scheduled promptly. They showed up the next available day and got right to work. They continued to work on each portion of the job until I was satisfied and gave me a very fair price. I would recommend them and wouldn’t hesitate to call for their services again. Good job guys and thanks.

Boston best construction has exceeded my expectations since day 1. They are honest, hard-working, efficient, responsive and friendly. I can always reach Eduardo to discuss anything - whatever time of day and on the weekends. His main crew is amazing - they show up early and work late to complete the job quickly. They always clean up after themselves. They also go above and beyond to assist (I had water in my basement after a rainstorm and his team stayed late to help us clean up the mess!). When an additional cost arose from the electrician, Eduardo absorbed the cost himself. I will definitely be using them for any future projects and highly recommend him to anyone else who wants the job done right.

RJ Development did a great job on our electrical needs in an attic that had very little power. Pricing was fair and the job was done same day when he came to quote it. He worked hard until the job was done into the night and completed everything he said he'd do. After happily wiring and hanging 2 large light fixtures and adding several electrical outlets, we were very pleased with his work and had him return form another larger project a few weeks later to include running another circuit for more power (from basement to attic!) and installing two floorboard heaters. He worked and did it all in a day and did a professional job that works great and is discreet in keeping with the rustic decor. Very fairly priced and worked quietly and consistently until the job was complete. We're happy with our project and would hire again. Definitely recommend.

Over the past 10 years, Pino Construction has done a great deal of work on our home in Newton, including a two-story addition with a new kitchen and master; a finished basement; and two new bathrooms. We couldn't be happier with the work, the fair prices, the attention to detail, and the follow-up. Bob Pino is a true pro and a genuinely good guy. He's a first-rate contractor and craftsman who has completely earned our trust.

I had a pleasure of hiring Russell for home floor repairing job (engineered hard wood). I would highly recommend Russell for such carpentry work. Based on this fantastic experience, I would consider him for other home repair/installation jobs (gutters, storm door, etc). I had a buckled (peaked) floor due to the seller/installer not leaving enough gaps at the edges to account for expansion of hard wood during summer. I had about 6 estimates, and by far, his pricing was the most reasonable. While most people charged per job, Russell quoted me an hourly rate. Some more reasonable than others. A few were flat out reluctant to do the job, due to its small size (maybe thought it was less profitable) despite the full day needed for its completion. By giving me a ridiculous quote (similar pricing to a new floor installation), they implied they didn't want to work. The job required removing the moldings from the impacted walls, removing all of tiles, then laying them again from the problematic area. He sticks to the quote and to his estimated time. He has a good pace and doesn't linger to buy time. Also, I found him to be very personable. The job was done to the utmost satisfaction. If you want an honest, hard working man to look after your home repair jobs, this would be the guy.

We hired Bob to demo an odd room with a roof that was built in the middle of our loft. He’d estimated that it would be a two or three day job. As demos go, it’s hard to tell exactly until you get into it. Unfortunately, the structure was built to withstand a hurricane and was a much tougher job than expected. Everything was excessively nailed and had to be pounded out piece by piece. Yet, Bob finished in two days with everything hauled to the dump and the work area cleaned. He was on time and courteous and worked around my schedule. Before he could do the demo, we had to have the sprinkler system rerouted, and Bob was very accommodating with our start date. A hard worker, and I’d highly recommend him.

I had a great experience with Victor and his team for my finished basement project. My house is from 1906 with low ceilings, sloped floors, etc... They did an amazing job to create a beautiful space. Workers were friendly and on time, cleaned up every day before they left. I highly recommend hiring Bay State Group for your next project.

Richard helped me disconnect old washer/dryer and install new ones. He even hauled away old ones without extra charge. Since my washer is in a small bathroom in basement, it took him longer time to remove old appliances. But he kept the original quote. I would recommend Richard to others who need to install new washer/dryer.

We selected the Corning Basement Finishing System because of the materials and on the promise of a quick install. When it was all said and done the Corning system and Lux Renovations fulfilled all that was promised. Throughout the process, from sales, planning, and construction, the Lux team was professional, courteous, and responsive. We are extremely happy with the quality of the materials and the work.

Marco and his team helped us to finish our basement. Even though it took little longer than expected, at the end we are happy with their service. Marco was very helpful, flexible and clearly explains every step in the process. His team already helped us on two other projects afterwards. We strongly recommend Bilmar Construction for your project.

Rt basements I hired Ricardo to refinish the basement of my newly acquired, older home, for a workroom space. He worked with me on pricing, helped me prioritize the work that needed to be done. His crews were polite, cleaned up after themselves. He got the work completed on time for the "big move"! I am very happy with the finished product. Oct 9, 2018

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
