We had one plug outlet replaced and one light switch replaced. Brandon was very responsive, punctual, and professional . He double checked with us through a phone call about the specifics of the job and brought all materials needed. He was able to provide same day service at a rate that was very competitive with the large electric companies we had already called for quotes about the same project.

Rob did an amazing job! He was on time and worked quickly and with care. He wall-mounted my boyfriend's guitar and hung a mirror and some pictures for us. He also repaired a broken kitchen cabinet and helped us replace our kitchen faucet which had a crack in it. The replacement faucet we got didn't work with our sink and Rob walked with me to the hardware store a few blocks away to exchange it for one that worked. He ended up staying an extra hour to finish switching out the faucets. Would definitely use Rob again! He's extremely skilled and pleasant to be around.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. I definitely recommend Patrick for professional or personal services. Patrick is mastery in his work. I original had wallpaper throughout my kitchen and the paint was old and outdated. After taking a picture and submitting it, Patrick came out for a free estimate. I was so comfortable in his price and delivery time, I signed up for his services the same day. He stayed in touch with me the during the whole project and updated me and sent pictures as he was completing the job. Patrick painted the kitchen/hallway and other rooms and removed the wallpaper professionally. The kitchen was so pristine, when my house went on the market, everyone thought I brought new cabinets. Patrick completed the entire project. I'm in the real estate market so I will definitely call him for the next task. Thanks again Patrick!!!

EXCELLENT! This is the only way to describe everything about my experience with Tony and Omar of Renaissance Restoration. They corrected the errors of previous installers, took the time to do everything perfectly, and graciously fixed issues for which they weren't hired. Renaissance is the only company I've hired that possesses the same expectation of excellence and high standards as I...and I'm difficult to please. I am thrilled and will use them again, not just for TV mounting but for major home improvements. Don't waste your time with other companies - just call Tony.

I highly recommend Mr. Padilla! He has completed several projects around our house including fixing cabinets, fixing a broken toilet, repairing a large hole in our wall, and buildings steps in our front yard. We were impressed with both the quality of the work, and Mr. Padilla’s efficiency. We will certainly hire him and his team again in the future.

Robert was fantastic, I highly recommend his services. He works hard to get the job done, and the final product is always perfect. He completes complicated jobs in a very short time, and his pricing is excellent. He is professional and punctual. He successfully assembled a queen bed and a crib, installed closet doors, shifted furniture, installed a door handle and drawer knobs, and cleverly solved a problem I was having with a defective box spring, among other jobs. I would definitely hire him again and highly recommend his services.

My husband and I hired Good Painter to refinish our kitchen cabinets. Andrey and his team did an excellent job and I am extremely happy with the results. Even though the previous home owners did not maintain the cabinets well (very sticky and dirty from grease), Good Painter managed to get it all off. Whenever I needed to reach Andrey, I was able to do so via text, e-mail, or phone and he was always able to take our requests. If you value quality work you should give Good Painter a try.

I had a custom bar made for me by Leopard Designs. I had given the measurements of what would fit in my place and a general idea of what I wanted, with a couple sample pictures. I didn't know exactly what to expect but was very pleasantly surprised. The work was above expectations and to be honest above what I thought I would get for my money. The matting, the beveled edges and wire meshing on the side of the hanging wine rack were all amazing. I did not realize till a few days after that the lights that illuminated the wine glass rack and mirror was an adjustable dimmer which really added a nice touch. The only cons I have is that I wasn’t specific when asking about the lighting in the cabinet area. The lights were motion active so whenever I opened the door the light would turn on, which was great. The problem is that it eventually burned out and had trouble finding the replacement. That issue was resolved fairly quickly when I simply reached out to Leopard Design and asked about the light. Though I wish the completion time could be quicker all together I am very pleased with the results and product.

The painters showed up on time and did an excellent job. I didn’t have to move anything because they moved my furniture to the center of the rooms and covered everything: furniture, floors, counters, etc. I was very satisfied with the time it took the 3 workers to complete the job. They put everything.back in place before leaving and left my house very tidy. I would highly recommend this business. Thank you for a job well done.

After previous bad experience and unfinished job. I was sceptical to hire somebody to finish what others did not. I am glad I did. The estimate was fair, the job was done in a half day. All looked good and finished. I needed some lights under the kitchen cabinets, install kitchen faucet, realign valves and drain under the sink. Add disposal, connect dishwasher. I noticed that he pays attention to details and i don't need to babysit him through out the project. He is a problem solver and takes right decisions along with the wishes of the customer. I was also asking him to replace mechanical thermostat for a digital one. And that's where we fail. He did not want to do it since old one had just two wires and usually he dealt with 5 and up. However I insisted to install it anyway according the suggested picture in the thermostat instruction. Well, it got burned immediately. Thermostat Tech support told that most likely we had high voltage and thermostat goes just with low. Good to know through your own experience! I was not disappointed by that simply because I knew I hired a handyman. And I'm willing to hire him again for other projects.

John did a wonderful job building and installing our custom kitchen cabinets. He was great to work with in every aspect from laying out the kitchen, to deciding on drawers and cabinets and being flexible when we changed our minds. He provided us with detailed designs that were a great tool when choosing finishes. Everything looks beautiful and I enjoy cooking in my kitchen every day! I look forward to working with John on more custom cabinets throught my home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.
