I moved out of a four bedroom townhouse into a tiny one bedroom apartment on the third floor with no elevator. David, the owner, calmed my nerves when we spoke to confirm the appointment, and on moving day two movers showed up on time and expertly packed their truck with all of my belongings. They were able to load everything, including two large pieces of furniture that needed to be taken apart, into their small truck in just under two hours. They made it to my new place quickly and before I knew it, had finished loading everything into the apartment. Though I could tell they were probably exhausted because of so much heavy lifting and so many stairs, they didn't complain once, and assured me they were fine every time I apologized for putting them through so much. David himself drove by my new apartment twice during the moving process, and had come with the movers in the morning to meet me and make sure I knew to call of there were any issues. The final price was much less than I had been expecting to pay, and I was able to pay quickly over the phone with David. I will definitely be hiring them if I move again!

The crew arrived on-time, very friendly and pleasant. I truly had a great time moving with this crew as moving can be very stressful. They move very quickly, given that we had two flights of stairs and heavy large furniture. However, after lunch time we all became restless and needed a break. We purchased the crew lunch to eat and they were back at it, supercharged and ready to go. It took us about 9 hours to move a two bedroom, but we have a lot stuff and some items were too big and had to be maneuvered a few times. We had several expensive glass items that we opt to move our self for less risk but didn't relay the message in-time. These guys moved so fast before we knew it, we were unpacking these very expensive glass items in our new home - safe and secure. You hear a lot horror stories about moving companies workers stealing items and moving your items careless. Not Amine's movers, they showed extra care to our items, our walls/floors and even our children's toys. To date, no missing items! Amine, the owner is nice to work with as well. I did call last minute and was able to move the weekend as desired. Very reasonable rate and no hidden fees. Straight up cost, no surprises. The only down side is I truly do not believe we received a 20ft truck as promised. Nonetheless, the items that did not fit within the truck, the crew helped put these items in my husband and I car for a successful one trip move. Request, Jose and Omar...excellent team! Thanks!

They would get 5 starts if Ali can be a bit more professional, actually read his E mails and respond in timely manner. I had sent him list of items to be moved One month in advance, which included a fish tank [65 tall, with a homebuilt heavy base.] as well. He accepted the list and sent in a contract. Advance was paid immediately. We booked time for move out from condo association, and everything was kept ready. After that there was one E mail which stated that he will be sending in a 17 feet truck with timings etc. , to which I expressed my concerns with specific mention of the tank. No reply to that mail. The second last day of the move I felt uncomfortable about not receiving any communication, so called up, and Ali answered. Extremely unprofessional. He read the E mail correspondence for the first time, and stated that he wont be moving the tank. When he was reminded that he was agreed to the contract, he bluntly stated " go find another mover!". After some assertive reminding of the nature of the contract, and possible fallout of not providing the service as agreed up on, he stated that he will send in his team, but if the foreman doesn't feel comfortable, he wont move the tank. With no options left as moving could not be postponed, we agreed. I also agreed for an earlier timing, and paying extra fair above and beyond agreed, in view of possibility of extra time required. After such bad experience, we were not expecting any quality service from the movers, but to out pleasant surprise, the guys who showed up for actual move were very polite, very efficient and accommodating. They made the move seem pretty easy, and with 5 hours of tireless work did really well, earning well deserved tip and a rating going from -1 earned by Ali to a 4/5 at the end. I hope Ali at least reads this review and mends his ways, as he has a great crew that has to do some heavy lifting, no pun intended; to account for his brazen ways and utter unprofessional attitude.

This moving company was amazing. They were on time, efficient, polite and very careful with all of my belongings. The movers wrapped everything in moving blankets, tape, etc. They took apart all of my furniture and put everything back together with perfection. At my new home, they even wrapped the wall with plastic and blankets to ensure that there were no scratches as they carried my heavy furniture up the stairs. I would definitely recommend this company and use them again in the future.

Had a moving scheduled between 9-10. Threw movers arrived within that window and got out two bedroom condo moved out and onto the truck in a little over 2 hours, including wrapping or disassembling furniture. They were well prepared with plenty of wrap, tape and blankets for fragile items. They even went up to another location to get a massive toolbox chest and other heavy items before unloading at our new home. All in all the estimate was for 5 hours, but it took 6.5, which is very understandable given that we had to make an extra stop. They were professional, reasonably priced, and very efficient, and I would hire them again if I needed movers.

Smart Moving helped us move some large and heavy equipment from Alexandria to D.C. They did a great job for a very reasonable price. They showed up on time, brought enough staff and tools and were very careful when moving the equipment. Items arrived in great condition, no dents or scratches. I highly recommend Smart Moving for your moving needs.

Charlie and his team did an outstanding job. They moved my large heavy furniture from a 3rd floor apartment with killer stairs, into another 3rd floor apartment. The entire team was friendly, efficient, knowledgeable, and they worked great together. We did come across an issue with getting two pieces of furniture in the door which was totally my fault for not measuring. Despite all their efforts it couldn't be done. When I asked for help in getting the items to the nearest storage facility they jumped right on it with no complaints. I am so appreciative for the hard work that they put in, and will definitely use them in the future.

Great guys, very fast and very careful. They allowed me to focus on other aspects of moving day and let them take care of the heavy lifting without concern. These guys start working from the moment they got to my place until the job was done and they had a great attitude the whole time. Book these dudes!

Darrell and his associate helped move some large heavy bookcases filled with books in our home. They were very professional and efficient, and careful navigating through tight spaces. They went the extra mile to help rearrange heavy desks for me even though that was extra! I would definitely hire them again, and recommend to others!

Both men moved some heavy pieces of furniture from floor to floor and to my neighbor. They were very careful to not damage my furniture or my walls, a feat considering my narrow stairways.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
