Our organization had a large number of trees and debris that needed to be hauled away and cut down. The appropriate equipment was out on site and Ed had the project done in record time since it consisted of about 2.5 acres that needed to be cleared with brush needing to be removed as well. Scope of work was removal of trees/brush and debris and also leveling the land to make sure there was the right drainage. Project took 4 days to be completed and I couldn't be more happy with the service and the customer service that I always received since I did call Ed in the late evening and he always made a point to answer and return calls. Will be referring to our other commercial clients!!

Cesar is highly professional, prompt, and respectful. He did a great job removing shrubs outside my house and made beautiful mulch beds at a very reasonable cost. I highly recommend his work and would hire him again if needed.

I had a gas fireplace installed two years ago. Another contractor did the basic frame and sheetrock around the fireplace but didn't finish the job. Jenrri met with me in person to assessed the job and give a quote for the work. Jenrri was pleasant and professional and my two Westies both liked him. If they didn't like him I wouldn't have hired him. He said the front area around the firebox would need to have the sheetrock replaced with cement board. I was glad he knew this because not having the right materials could be a fire hazard. After meeting with him. I decided to hire him and planned for him to come Feb. 16-19, 2016 to do this job. He did this job with another worker named Melby. Jenrri and I had to buy materials from the store the first day, but Melby stayed and started working. He removed the sheetrock and also cut boards for the shiplap look I wanted on the upper front and sides of the fireplace. Jenrri and Melby completed cutting and installing about half of the boards the first day. They laid tile on the hearth and around the firebox. I had picked large tiles for the hearth and small tiles to go around the firebox. The small tiles took more time to cut and install. Some of the tile around the firebox doesn't lay completely flat because of the screws for the cement board and because the framing around the firebox wasn't level. If I had to pick again I would have picked larger tiles to go around the firebox. They would have been easier to install and wouldn't have shown that the firebox wasn't completely level. After the tile and boards were installed they painted all the boards and the two walls on each side of the fireplace. Then installed the mantle and touched up the painting. They did a very nice job cleaning up when the work was done and even put furniture and a rug back in place. They also completed the job on time. I am happy with my finished fireplace. It looks beautiful. Both Jenrri and Melby work hard and do a good job. Maybe if Jenrri did the whole project instead of finishing someone else's work it would have been perfect. I would hire him again and I would recommend him to others.

Enrique Doig, the owner of eTree Services, is a professional in every sense of the word. He responded to my Thumbtack posting almost instantaneously, gave me a very good price for taking down a 60 foot tree and pruning a number of other trees on my property, kept his word about doing the work promptly, brought a courteous, professional crew to assist him in doing the work, and performed every aspect of the job beyond my expectations. I highly recommend eTree Services for the pruning and removal of trees.

Sorto was great! I got a very fair price estimate within a day, and we were able to schedule a day for the work early the next week. We did a full spring cleanup, including trimming, wedding, lawn cleanup, mulching and edging. Everything looks great and we will be using Sorto as needed going forward! We are very happy with our choice!!

Galloway Landscaping was EXCELLENT and exceeded all of my expectations. Najee was very responsive to my initial inquiry and came the very next day to give me a free estimate. I had a 200 foot boxwood hedge that had not been trimmed for several years and was out of control. I was apprehensive about having the hedges trimmed because the person that had done them several years ago had completely botched them up. Najee assured me that he had been trimming hedges all of his life and that I would be happy. Najee and his partner arrived at the agreed upon time, and worked non-stop. Not only did they complete the agreed upon work, but they did several additional jobs that I asked them to do for me. In addition to trimming the hedges and bushes, they planted 3 new bushes and created a new mulch bed. They cleaned up and removed all trimmings. They were very pleasant and made sure that I was satisfied with the work they have performed. Several neighbors have stopped by and commented how wonderful my hedge looks now that it has been trimmed! They did a wonderful job at a fair price. It would have taken me 3-4 days to do what they accomplished in several hours. They are coming back next week to install a paver patio for me! I can't say enough about how happy I am with the wonderful work they did. I like my yard again!

The workers of Beautiful Country Landscape LLC showed up a bit unexpectedly, as we didn't have a set appointment, but the work done was EXTREMELY impressive. They took on a task that all the other tree removal services we got quotes from refused to do because the tree was in a lowered area that traditional stump grinders wouldn't be able to access. So what did they do? They chopped away the stump BY HAND. With a GARDENING PICK and an AX. The price was the most reasonable estimate we received as well!! All I can say is their dedication to get the job done was truly off the charts!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
