Rob seems to be a jack of all trades who understands how things work and will perform small jobs. He installed adjustable shelving in my pantry and a bedroom closet. There were metal strips with brackets and the laminated shelving had to be custom cut. The pantry was tricky because there was an immoveable bracing board in the back, so each shelf had to have a notch cut into it to fit against the wall. The finished product is exactly what I wanted. The shelves are perfectly level in both the pantry and the closet. He worked very neatly and paid a lot of attention to measuring and cutting. I also hired him to assemble a large desk which I ordered from a catalog. It has five file drawers and a slide-out keyboard holder. He unpacked the boxes and assembled the desk perfectly. He was very careful to ensure that the cherry finish didn’t get scratched during assembly. I have also seen some of his other work. He builds cornhole boards and finishes them with custom colors and logos. He creates original signs for basement bars and game rooms using fine hardwoods, hand carving, and a router. He seems to have a real talent for fine woodworking.

Tim worked on various installations and assemblies, like assembling a stepping stool, wooden futon, and installing towel racks and curtain rods, etc. He is a hard worker and seems to have endless energy. I have been very happy with the above mentioned work, and found that he was willing to go the extra mile to deal with problems encountered along the way, e.g. a weird plastic piece appearing on what was supposed to be a bronze metal towel rack, so he did nifty things to hide the plastic. However, more recently, an assignment he had happily accepted--to build two side tables and a coat rack--had to be aborted. Unfortunately that was after lots and lots of time had passed, I wished he had called it off or not accepted the assignment in the first place unless he could see it through, so that I could have had the items done by someone else long ago, as I was desperate to get several home improvement things out of the way. The side tables--which are pretty--were done for the most part but not fully (I still need to find another woodworker to do the unfinished business) and the coat rack was not done at all. Somehow his heart was simply not in it anymore, but would have been better to just straightforwardly cancel a job rather than dragging things out. This is why I am giving 4 instead of 5 stars. He did feel bad about how things went with these three pieces and therefore didn't charge me for one of the side tables.

Very professional Painters, they were prompt and trustworthy. They did an excellent paint job of my House that was for sale. I even hired his Mother in Law to Deep Clean my Townhouse which was for sale and she was professional, prompt and trustworthy as well. I'd recommend them to anyone and will be hiring them for future projects.

I had a unique woodworking project, and had been seeking an experienced professional to help me realize my vision. I was unable to find any woodworkers that were willing to take on the unique project of creating a wood and glass table. Greg reached out to me, was attentive and listened to my ideas, and provided a portfolio of his work which was very impressive. Upon listening to my vision, he provided multiple mock-ups. We went through a few iterations, and he produced the EXACT mock up of what I was looking for. Throughout the project, he was very responsive, sending multiple pictures of his progress each week, and taking my feedback to implement changes. Greg delivered the final piece this weekend, and I could not be happier! Not only was it an absolute pleasure working with him through the process, the final product is AMAZING. It is beautiful, and truly shows the time he spent, and how much he cared about his final product. I immediately hired him again for another project, and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a talented woodworker!

In planning our move from Northern Virginia to our home in Florida, My wife and I faced a potentially costly issue with having to replace our dining room table and buffet set, because the 104" long table would not fit into the considerably smaller dining room in our new home in Florida. Although we really did not want to replace the set, we had already conceded that we would have to run a local Craigslist ad, and hopefully be able to find a buyer who would offer us pennies on a dollar for the set, or have to give it away for free before the movers show up in 30 days. My wife was already looking at $5,000 replacement sets. Ouch! Running out of time, I thought if I could find a skilled woodworking craftsman that would take on a small but challenging project such cutting down a table top by about 20", we may be able to make the dining set work in the new home. Through Thumbtack, I described the project, received a list of potential woodworkers, and solicited to a half dozen furniture builders for the project. I received a response from only one individual, Gerry Hurley of Max Min Design. I read the reviews of Gerry's work, and impressed by the photos of his past projects, we hired Gerry. Gerry's price to do the project was very reasonable, and in addition, he said that he would be able to complete the job in ample time before the movers show up. Gerry got right on it. He came to the house with the right tools and was able to do a fantastic job; cutting down the table top, making the necessary modifications to the under supports, shortening the finished side rails, and stained and finished the end cut surface to perfectly match the rest of the table. Gerry even used scrap from wood removed to make a number of matching wood plugs to cover all the new screw holes in the shortened side rails, to look exactly like the original construction. To look at the table now, it is impossible to detect that the table had ever been modified. In addition, Gerry also stained and finished the 20" section that was removed so that I can possibly use later for a nice sized matching coffee table. All I need to do is add the four legs. Gerry, I welcome you and your good ethical nature to this USA. The end product and the professionalism you show in your work clearly portrays the pride you take in your skill and craftsmanship. A great job Gerry! Thank you!

Craig did an awesome job of restoring a very old teak coffee table. We asked him to take his time with the job and he kept us regularly updated with photos as the work progresses. We are very happy with the results and would recommend Craig to anyone looking for wood refinishing work.

David went above and beyond for our job. We were on a serious time crunch, he came out for the estimate over a holiday. He didnt upsell, he didnt push a specific product or service. We interviewed at least 6 companies and David was one of the most knowledgeable and articulate of the candidates. We chose him because he was able to explain the reasoning behind his recommendations, was thorough, and offered a fair price for work. We hired him for interior and exterior paint and refinishing wooden cabinets, but he also helped with some cleanup around exterior windowsills. We were quite satisfied with all of the work, and he finished 3 days ahead of his projected schedule (he worked weekends to expedite the job). Onsite during the job David was courteous and professional. He was also punctual throughout, and a day before completing offered a walk through to call out any additional work. We hope David will be available the next time we need to paint!

I got the mudroom done with a custom design. Paul worked with with the design options and gave good suggestions. He has given a fair and reasonable price. He is very responsive. The end result of the project was a beautiful mudroom. We are enjoying it very much. I would hire him for any cabinetry work in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
