7/3/2015 Mr. Trenton Snyder is the ultimate personable professional! He showed up at my home on time and was ready to get the job done. This was my first time hiring a Handyman, to assemble my entertainment center that had a million pieces. I automatically felt that I was dealing with a true professional, like myself. He answered and explained any and all questions that I had and offered logical and functional solutions. I highly recommend Mr. Snyder because his price was perfect/reasonable for the task at hand; and within 2 hours my entertainment center was assembled. It would have taken me an entire day to do it myself....before I knew it the job was done. He put my electronics items on the shelves after the assembly. I was quite pleased with the service that I received. I will call him again anytime that I have something that requires a Handyman, He'll be my first choice!. Hire Mr. Snyder, you won't go wrong.. Thank you!!!!! Keith Brown

The Name on his business card "handyman" is both consistent with his own assessment of his business model and technical capabilities, and in my opinion, he is a very honorable professional smart enough to not take on a project that has any chance of disappointing the client. I would strongly recommend him to anyone.

Lee was great. He was early and ready to work. Thankfully he was able to prevent us making a big mistake as parts were missing from the showerhead we purchased. While I ran out to get a new one he worked on other projects I requested. I will definitely be calling again. Once he left I thought of a few more things that needed his handyman services.

Where do I start? Matthew was amazing! If you have needs for a handyman, you have found one. From responsiveness to punctuality to expertise of his craft; he does it all. This guy is amazing. He asks questions and genuinely wants to please the customer. "The customer is always right" is his motto. Trust me he treats your ideas as if it's the Holy Grail of his project and even stays later to make sure you are pleased with his work. He cleaned up after the work was done making sure to leave my place as neat as possible. Pricing was more than reasonable for the amount of work that he did. So a big thank you to Matthew for making my apartment look fabulous and just being overall a great guy during the whole process. CHOOSE HIM!!!

Mr. Flaco responded promptly to my request for a handyman and arranged to do the work the following day. We kept in touch by phone and text so that I knew when he would arrive and if he had the proper equipment. He completed the job efficiently and accepted a fair price.

Eduardo was very communicative during the process, was punctual and worked around my schedule. His rates are very reasonable. I had Eduardo assemble a hard top gazebo, which weighs almost 320lbs. He worked hard and much quicker than I thought possible. I offered to help with the lifting part but he did it all except for that. The results are amazing. I highly recommend Eduardo for all your handyman needs. He also fixed a troublesome toilet roll holder.

After previous bad experience and unfinished job. I was sceptical to hire somebody to finish what others did not. I am glad I did. The estimate was fair, the job was done in a half day. All looked good and finished. I needed some lights under the kitchen cabinets, install kitchen faucet, realign valves and drain under the sink. Add disposal, connect dishwasher. I noticed that he pays attention to details and i don't need to babysit him through out the project. He is a problem solver and takes right decisions along with the wishes of the customer. I was also asking him to replace mechanical thermostat for a digital one. And that's where we fail. He did not want to do it since old one had just two wires and usually he dealt with 5 and up. However I insisted to install it anyway according the suggested picture in the thermostat instruction. Well, it got burned immediately. Thermostat Tech support told that most likely we had high voltage and thermostat goes just with low. Good to know through your own experience! I was not disappointed by that simply because I knew I hired a handyman. And I'm willing to hire him again for other projects.

Nick did a great job dis-assembling an existing bed frame and installing a new bed. He also fixed a bathroom fan that was not operating. He’s professional, very responsive, fair, and was even considerate to work quietly with a baby napping in the house. Would hire again for Handyman needs!

Working with a variety of colors, he and his crew achieved excellent results in a timely manor and for a very reasonable price. I highly recommend "PMG Handyman" as a professional, courteous and friendly contractor for all of your home improvement needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
