Hands down, the best experience with a moving company that I have had the pleasure of dealing with. I've tried a few of the companies (including doing it myself) in the past when moving between apartments, but Your Friends with a Truck have blown away any expectations or preconceived notions that I had about moving companies. They were the lowest quote I got, but still worked harder than anyone else I've used in the past. I would (and have!) recommended them to anyone that will be moving in the near future.

NovaMovers and Amine did a wonderful job! Two (2) men showed up with a big, commercial sized truck to move my one (1) bedroom apartment to a three (3) bedroom house I had just purchased. The movers arrived early, moved all my belongings without damage, and did it with a smile. Full packing of things such as clothing and dishes are available and are included in the pricing, but my wife and I did that part. The NovaMovers price is competitive with, if not cheaper than, others in the DC Metro area. Amine, the company's owner, is highly attentive and involved in the process, so you know you will be taken care of throughout. There are no surprises in pricing like some other moving companies in the area and payment is hassle free by credit card. I highly recommend the company to anyone moving soon!

Best moving experience we've ever had! NYP movers were professional, efficient, and reasonably priced ($99/hr for 3 movers, truck, and furniture pads). Ali, Kevin and Ronaldo were very careful not to damage any of our furniture or walls. They wrapped all wood surfaces to minimize scratches. And they were even able to move our massive couch which other moving companies have struggled and even refused to move.I'd highly recommend using NYP movers for your next more!

After moving 7 times, I guess I can call myself a moving expert. In the midst of many moving companies, I found Baku Moving, to be quite different from others. Their crew showed up on time and they were very efficient. The whole packing and loading process was completed in just 2 hours. They delivered all my things on time and in great condition and they charged me very reasonably. I would definitely recommend them to all of my friends.

Zebna is a great moving company. They were clear and consistent with their pricing and provided great value compared to other moving companies. I was impressed that they agreed to deliver my belongings for an interstate move (Maryland to North Carolina) within one day. They arrived within 30 minutes of the promised window for the pick-up and delivered on the day promised. I was particularly impressed with the two movers who delivered my belongings and reassembled my furniture efficiently with friendliness and good humor. I do recommend packing your own belongings if you hire this company or hiring a separate professional packing service. They are great movers but not professional packers.

As a retired military spouse I have moved several times and this was truly the best experience I have ever had. In fact I have never encountered a moving company that was so accommodating and professional. I received my keys a day early and decided to call Charlie just to see if it was a chance they could move me earlier than scheduled. Sure enough they where at my house and ready to move me within an hour of my call. These gentleman where went out of there way to accommodate me. They where very careful. In fact they made sure my items where wrapped and packed correctly. I collect crystal so I was a little nervous about my items getting there safely. Well every piece made it and not one piece was scratched or broken. These gentlemen went the extra mile to make sure I was satisfied. I would difinately recommend them. They where definitely without a doubt the best choice. The Best!!!! A+A+A+A+A+

Honest, Reliable, Trustworthy, NO HIDDEN FEES, ZERO DAMAGE, ESTIMATE WAS SPOT ON! I hired the services of Great Nation Movers to facilitate our move into a new house. Moving is a very stressful experience and the last move we undertook, the last moving company I hired was downright awful - causing damage to furniture and walls in the new place, after which I never received my claim check and they blocked my phone calls. BUT - Great Nation Movers were the complete opposite! The three gentlemen showed up on-time. There was no tricks or hidden fees like most moving companies charge. They charge by the hour, with a 4 HOUR total minimum. These three young guys worked very hard to get the move done on time. They even moved some large pieces at the new house that were left behind by the original owner so that I can get rid of them. They were courteous, efficient and definitely what they were doing (they know how to twist and turn furniture to fit through tight spaces, and when they wouldn't fit, they knew how to improvise by carefully going through an extra large window, etc). I HIGHLY recommend you give this company a call if you need moving services. You will NOT be disappointed. Rose and her customer service will not disappoint.

These guys are about their business!!! What I love and look for in a moving company. They play no games. Come in and get the job done and out!! Responsiveness: they responded to my request as soon as I posted. I was in a jam getting furniture delivered from Frederick to DC. Communication: very quick, swift and clear. They called me in the morning to follow up and fulfil their promise. Fair price, very professional team of guys. As a renter I move often and will def give these guys a call again without hesitation. Thank you so much and happy holidays!

Fred and Glen are nice. Came up with a reasonable quote to move my 2 bed apt across 428 miles. I was looking for some movers who can move my stuff in a day time rather than delivering it after a week or so(as most moving companies do in general). These two quickly loading everything, drove all the way straight and unloaded at my new place. No damages & proper care taken. I would strongly suggest hiring this company for all types of moves.

Great moving company! They quoted me an amazing price online and honored that price. Most other moving companies try to retrade the price, but Pro Movers is true to their word. They even moved more items than originally quoted - including my Vespa! Will 100% hire again!

They took great care with my furniture, plastic wrapping every piece, which I did not expect honestly. I could not be more pleased with the service PMS. provided. I hope to never move again but if I do I will call PMS.

Jake, Godfrey, and Bri were great! They showed up ten minutes early and were incredibly efficient with the move. In 4.5 hours, they had moved all of my stuff to the new apartment AND helped me make a pit stop at my boyfriend's house to do a couch-swap. When there was a mix-up with the scheduling at my new apartment and we had to share the loading dock / service elevator, OSSL took it in stride and, despite the hold up, still managed to quickly move all of my things. Without asking, they volunteered to take apart and reassemble my bed before and after the move too. Overall, they were so accommodating and kind the entire time. I've done many moves before and it's always been stressful, but because of OSSL, this one was pretty painless! Plus, I had done quite a bit of research on other moving companies' rates, and OSSL had the best rate with no strings attached. Many companies charge for miles driven, for example, but OSSL only charges by the hour. It was nice not to worry about all the "extra" costs that I was racking up during the move. I highly recommend OSSL and would surely use them again!

We could not have been more happy with Adrian during our move last weekend! They were punctual, efficient, and great to talk to. The move was quicker than we thought it would be and hiring them made all the difference. Checkmate was also so much more affordable than some of the bigger moving companies I originally looked into. I can't recommend them enough.

When it was time for me to move, I researched, researched and then researched some more. I talked to many companies. But there was something special about the gentleman on the phone from Pick Up Movers that I decided to hire them. They were absolutely awesome. They packed with military precision. They were out of my house before anyone even knew that I was moving out. I am so very grateful to them for delivering on time and saving the trouble of having to beg them to give me my things back. There are so many inefficient moving companies and fortunately, I got the best one.

I had an excellent experience when it came to both the coordination and execution of my long distance move with M&M Moving and Hauling. They were the first company to provide me with a quote, and were able to complete the job for a very reasonable price. My father, who oversaw the pickup location side of the move, even commented on how efficient they were at loading everything. Even if you are moving into a walk-up with narrow stairwells, no need to fear— Marvin and his assistant dealt with it spectacularly. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire them again.

Our two helpers were great for moving our large items upstairs. They were quick, made a good team, and were very friendly. My only issue was that they weren’t as familiar with putting the furniture back together, and my husband had to do most of the work on that front. Would definitely hire again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
