Alvin was fantastic. I used him for my wedding ceremony to accompany a family friend who plays the trumpet. In the weeks leading up to the event he was responsive and helpful with music suggestions and timing and set a beautiful mood for my outdoor wedding. I would definitely recommend using him.

Brooksley did an amazing job and was very professional very personable very caring. She also was very patient in that fact that I pretty much was my own wedding corrdinator and had no idea what I was doing! She made our special day even more beautiful by her presence and beautifully played music. I definitely recommend her hands down. She did a wonderful job for us and she will for anyone else as well!

There are not enough kind words for Mark. He came to my house with his harp to play for me and once I booked him he kept everything a surprise. Having a harp at my wedding ceremony and cocktail hour was a surprise for my mom! Mark came to the rehearsal and stayed incognito the whole time. Mark was professional and added such class to the wedding. The music was beautiful and Mark let me customize it to exactly what I wanted. I would recommend Mark a million times over!!! Also my mom cried when she realized there was a harp. Thank you Mark for making my day so special!

I had the pleasure to work with Xen Live on May 14th, 2018 at Richland Golf Club, Middletown MD. He was very professional in every aspect: setting the speakers and the microphones ahead of time, providing a high quality equipment and being attentive to all the musicians including a singer, pianist, and violinist. The volume level was properly adjusted and the ceremony went as smoothly as possible despite the fact there was high wind at the site. I can't wait to work with Xen Live again, and highly recommend his business to everyone who is looking for a perfect wedding. Zhenya Zianouka, violinist pixieviolin.com

Don knows his stuff, he's easy to get along with and overall a really nice guy. He has an impressive repertoire of musical skills and a lifetime of experience in music to draw from. As far as instruments he can play a little bit of everything, he can basically teach you any instrument you'd find in a regular rock band, folk, country, pop, blues etc. He's probably most proficient on the guitar and piano but he also knows quite a lot about vocals. If you struggle with theory he does a great job demystifying some of the fundamentals of music theory that are useful to beginners. Whether you're an absolute beginner or long time musician Don will be able to help you out. Highly recommend.

Brian performed acoustic guitar for our wedding ceremony. He was extremely professional and everyone loved the music. Brian communicated great with us through the crazy wedding planning process and was able to learn new songs we requested. Thank you!

Glenn was great to work with. He had a very clear system of getting our input on the songs well before the event. Additionally, he made sure we were on the phone the week leading up to the wedding to clarify details. During the wedding, Glenn was very flexible and helped us work around some space constraints and last minute changes we had to make. We are extremely happy with the work Glenn did at our wedding, and I'd recommend him to any of my friends or family.

My wife wanted a wedding singer for our wedding. I said okay, but in the back of my mind I had flashes of Adam Sandler. We contacted David, and the whole process was very smooth...he was flexible and accomodating to what we wanted. We picked out 3 songs we wanted him to sing and he improvised the rest just before the start of the ceremony, which we were fine with. Let me tell you, David hands down exceeded our expectations. It felt as though we were at a concert rather than a wedding...we absolutely loved everything about his voice, his guitar playing, everything! In fact, he had me crying when he started singing the entrance songs for Sheila and I...it was very touching. We were married 4/29/2017, and we are both beyond happy that he was there to sing for us and our guests. Our guests are still raving about what a wonderful job the wedding singer did. Hiring David was the best decision for us and for our wedding, and we are honored by your presence. We cannot thank you enough for making our day even more special. So for anyone and everyone out there that is looking to enhance their day with the addition of a wedding singer, David is the man you need, hands down, no questions asked...he is that awesome!

We loved District Strings. Our wedding guests had nothing but compliments for them. They added a nice formal vibe to an otherwise casual wedding (just what we wanted). When we requested a couple of special songs, they were open to learning those for us. Working with Erin may well have been the easiest part of all our wedding planning. We're hoping to go hear them at one of their public performances soon.

Words can't express how highly we think of El Tariq and his business. He was more than willing to go out of his way to make our wedding day run flawlessly, and one to remember. I chose Headliner Pro Audio because of it's high ratings, and very reasonable prices. They lived up to my expectations, and even exceeded them. El Tariq was kind, respectful, accommodating, and very professional. He covered all the details with us, and was willing to go out of his way to be there for us technically (a major concern I had if I had to handle the audio alone). Not only did he just provide the equipment, but he stayed throughout the entire ceremony as well as the reception, keeping tabs on the audio the entire time. He worked one-on-one with our singer, provided a sound check, set up in a timely manner, removed in a timely manner, and never once made me doubt his knowledge or willingness to make sure everything went well. If you need audio for any event, skip the others and call Tariq! Not only is he a calm, nice guy, but is the best one out there for audio in the DC area! Mike

From the first gig that I worked with Jay and Trackside, they treated me as part of the group as we worked together to create video and photos worthy of a first class regional band. He and the group have always had my requirements as a priority and keep me informed about the things necessary for me to function in My role with the band. Love working with these guys. One of the best local rock bands ever!!

Goldenboyz Productions was recommended to me by a coworker who had them for her wedding reception. Hire Goldenboyz for your next event and I guarantee you will not be disappointed!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
