Mel saved my move! I had scheduled a mover and they were a no show! I spoke to Mel at 10:30 am and his movers were at my storage unit an hour later. The 2 movers were amazing! Both were very professional and worked harder than any movers I have ever worked with. I highly recommend Mel’s.

I needed some plastering, repairs, a door and a shower curtain installed in two different apartments. All the work was done quickly and thoroughly and we have plans to work together again in the near future. I recommend East Coast Painting!

I had a great experience working with EZ Movers! They came highly recommended to me. When I called them for an estimate they came right over, did a walk-through, gave me a price that they stuck to you with no hidden fees, showed up early on moving day and worked nonstop for hours until the last piece of furniture was put in its place. Super accommodating and respectful!

This week The Country Picker helped me with a move across several states. All my pieces of furniture were moved without a scratch, and the movers even took the door off my new apartment to get in some larger items. Every single person I interacted with throughout the process was incredibly nice and helpful.

The rates were reasonable, with no hidden charges or outrageous fees. There were options regarding the truck-- because I had a short move, I opted for the one where I paid for the U-haul myself. They still picked up and returned the truck for me, and this saved me money and time. The clock started when they arrived at my condo, and ended when they finished unloading the truck, which was a rare find in my search for affordable, quality movers. The movers, a team of three, were professional, efficient, and personable. We are incredibly grateful for their help, and will recommend D & J Elite moving to our family and friends.

I had a very good experience with all personnel of A Perfect Move. It was time to move the belongings out of the storage cube and blend our households. My husband had recently had surgery and could not do this work. I got a reasonable estimate from Erin. I had a list of what was in storage, what I wanted to sell, and what I wanted moved to our home. I had pre planned what was to go to the loft, rooms, and remain in the garage for sale. Also, pieces of furniture that needed to be moved within our home, room to room. I first met the team at the storage cube and they emptied the space. On to our home. True, pieces were not shrink wrapped, but were covered with padded blankets. While the estimate allowed 3 hours, it took 4, but was done with care and in the right places. I was very pleased with the work that these men did, especially under the circumstance of an unfinished steep stairway to the loft over the garage, and working around other furniture. Admittedly, another curved stairway was problematic for one of the movers, when he did not know which way to turn the dresser to fit up the staircase, but dilemma was solved. I was somewhat disappointed when a Murphy bed could not be moved safely and confidently to the garage, but opted to let my husband handle that later, as it was his unique valuable piece.

Who knew the stressful process of making a major move could result in your mover becoming a dear family friend? We found out recently, when a friend had recommended Robert to move our two family households 1,600 miles. My parents were unable to find a house at the time, so they stored their belongings in my new garage. Thanks to Robert, our initial move went so smoothly that when he offered to return to move them into their eventual home, we knew we'd call on him to do just that. Around the time they finally found a house, my sister passed away unexpectedly in the area we had left. Robert so very graciously helped us from afar by packing her belongings and bringing them to us (and moving a friend of my dad's on the way!). I'll always treasure his sensitivity and kindness in helping us unpack my sister's possessions, something we were not prepared to have to do. That's probably more moving than most individuals or families will ever have to do within a span of a few months, but Robert was there for us every step of the way. I cannot imagine how we would have coped without him. Robert's services are not only efficient and very reasonably-priced, he provides personal touches that are truly unique in the moving business. After our initial meeting with him, we were so impressed with the overall proposal, and did not look into any other moving companies. It was the best decision we could have made. On behalf of my parents, brother and two children, we are eternally grateful for his help and friendship! Robert is our mover for life.

Andrew and one employee came to help my fiancé and I load our furniture in a POD for our cross-country move. Andrew was knowledgeable about weight distribution and keeping our furniture safe. Our items came out with a few dings in the end, but I think that comes down to us shoving as much stuff in there as possible, not Andrew’s work at all. Great job—thanks Andrew!

Andy has done a great job plowing a complicated driveway and parking lot at my apartment building. He goes above and beyond working with my tenants as they move there cars and he also gets out and shovels which is rare. Would recommend him to anyone.

We hired these guys last year to help us get all of our stuff out of a storage unit and unto a truck. They were fast, decently priced and nothing was damaged or broken. I would definitely recommend them. I did notice a review that complained about their appearances and us of foul language. They are movers, not choir boys. They definitely were NOT rude to me or anyone else.

Excellent experience! When I first got a response from Heather (the owner), I googled her company and saw some bad reviews from a couple years back. She assured me that the company was completely different now and that they would provide great service. Her movers followed through on her promise. They were polite, hardworking, and really good at the logistics of moving. Nit only that—All told, we ended up paying $200 or $300 less than other movers that gave us quotes. I highly recommend these movers!

I got a heavy piece of workout equipment wedged in a narrow staircase. I called in these guys and they came and got me out of a tight spot. I would never have gotten my security deposit back without their help. While they were a bit late, they kept me informed as to their progress and never left me hanging. "We are stuck in traffic and expect to be 15 minutes behind." "We are 5 minutes away." Etc.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

        • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
        • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
        • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
        • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
        • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
