We inherited our house from my parents and I was looking for ideas and ways to bring it up to todays' standards and styles. I requested NWT Services to come out and look over our home to give us their thoughts on ideas to make our home, our home! The technicians not only presented us with some good ideas, but when they put it all into working perspective we were blown away! We had them finish our basement, remodel our kitchen and remodel our bathrooms, and also some general items in rest of home. I have dealt with contractors in the past, but Nick and his company are different. By that, they are of the caring nature, they get the job done, are clean, punctual, professional, honest and also are not expensive. They treated us and our home with respect. These are things that are lost amongst many contractors. I could tell that whoever taught them their line of work, taught them the right way. I would highly recommend for any project, large or small. We will always call them back for anything we need done.

Great Service, owner Tom listened to what I wanted worked within my budget and had an affordable solution for my landscaping design. Prompt service, job completed the day after I hired them, would recommend them to anyone looking for professional company, respectful employees and most importantly affordable landscaping needs. Big or small jobs, they are equipped to handle both with ease. Left work site clean, something that you do not always get with contractors! Hire them again in a heartbeat!

We needed work done on our house that we are trying to sell; Mike was extremely professional and prompt in providing a detailed estimate and recommendation, and then in getting the job done. Because we moved quite far from our house, he made working with him extra easy by communicating via text and email when needed. I wish all contractors were like Mike!

Tom is the best. OI have hired him in the past to redo and extend an old deck which turned out fantastic! Now he is in the process of finishing my basement and I am thrilled with the framing work he did in the 1250 sq foot space. I will definitely continue to hire Tom as not only are his costs reasonable, he always call me back and shows up on time. When i have tried to hire out other handyman or contractors its been the opposite. A lot of no shows or half done work that I they never call me back and go dark.

After reviewing three contractors, I went with Nicholas and Anthony, his tile guy. He did an amazing job! Anthony was a pure perfectionist and neat in his work and gave me exactly the look I wanted for a backsplash and fireplace surround. Oh yeah, he sanded some windows and repainted the trim. Windows look brand new!! Will definetly use ADRM again for other jobs I need done around the house in the near future! The price wasn't the cheapest, but wasn't the most expensive either. Nicholas gave me a fair price for great work, what more can you ask for?

Jim was the answer to my prayers. I had a small electrical issue in my home that needed to be addressed urgently. The electrical outlet for my washer:dryer went out on a Saturday afternoon with a full load of laundry in it. I called Jim and he explained it would be a simple job and that I could even replace the GFCI unit myself with some instruction over the phone. Incredibly, Jim taught me how to do the outlet installation over the phone at no charge! He saved me a bunch of money, and ensured that I did the repair safely. I can't thank Jim enough for his time and tremendous customer service on a Saturday afternoon. I will definitely be utilizing this contractor for all of my future electrical needs.

We needed an outlet over our fireplace and a fireplace insert installed and wired. I have had three different companies out and they all said it could not be done bc we had no attic or basement to run the wires. Alex not only looked at it but had two choices for us. We were so excited and happy to have someone who thinks outside the box and is so knowledgable. We just bought this house and it needs a lot of work. We are taking one project at a time and we have more projects coming up in the new year we would like to tackle he is the first person I will call and refer to the subdivision page on Facebook bc there are always neighbors looking for good contractors well versed in different areas like Alex is. His prices are affordable for our middle class family with two small kids and only one income. Please do not hesitate and call him you won't be disappointed once I get my fireplace all finished I'll post pics bc he made my Pinterest idea come to life ;) Jenna Bayes

Hector and his crew replaced the front half of my double drive which had been badly cracked and had sunken in. I had five contractors bid the job. Hector's knowledge and quality of materials was up there with the highest price contractors but he was able to beat their bids slightly. What really set him over the top that no one else did was that he offered to fill a large depression in the lawn next to the driveway as well for no extra charge. Maybe it's a little thing, but it shows his commitment to excellence. The driveway looks great.

Jacob did a fantastic job with my backsplash. He was on time, nice, and did really good quality work from start to end. Advised me of any issues he foresaw and wrapped up the job explaining to me any issues he encountered and how he addressed them. I was also impressed that he cleaned up when he was done. This may seem like common sense but I’ve dealt with ALOT of contractors/tradesmen that do the job and leave the mess. Would hire again in a heartbeat and recommend you do as well!

We had a complex job, with our porch leaking through the wall of our garage requiring multiple solutions both inside and outside. Working with Vini was fantastic, he thoroughly investigated the issue and worked collaboratively with both myself and other contractors to develop an effective, solid solution. As well as responding to challenges found along the way during excavation. The quote provided was very detailed and comprehensive, and was adhered to. We are happy with the result and to this point have had no further issues with water penetration. I would recommend Vini and his company to anyone.

I can not say enough good things about Michael! He came out on a very short notice due to another contractor going MIA half way through, started the next day and finished the following. All over a holiday weekend! He saves our butts, and did a great job. What you get when you hire him is an honest, kind, and hardworking guy. I have already recommended him to friends and wouldn't hesitate to hire him again.

After having several contractors doing various work around our home, we were shy about getting another to do a bath remodel. Rockwell came in and worked every day until the project was finished because they knew that this bathroom had the only shower. The professionalism was outstanding, and quality of work performed is next to none. I would recommend Rockwell to anyone!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
