Ruth is a godsend with my dog! She knows just how to handle my shy, 75-pound rescue dog to put him at ease and give him the exercise and sniff-time he needs while I am recovering from minor surgery. He comes back exhilarated from his walks with her! Super friendly and conscientious, Ruth is someone I would trust to take care of all my pet's needs if I ever went out of town. She is THAT caring and attentive and understands the way dogs work -- even mine, who gets separation anxiety and alpha tendencies. I am so grateful to have found Ruth who clearly has a big heart for dogs and people and really wants to help where it is needed!!! Thank you SO MUCH Ruth!!!!!

Becky and her amazing team took care of our cat Mama while we were on vacation for two weeks. We absolutely loved the pet visit texts and photo's we received daily, and could tell Mama was being well taken care of. We were able to enjoy our vacation knowing she was in such good hands. I would highly recommend Paws Around Motown, and will continue to use their services in the future.

Lisa did an amazing job watching my dog for one week at my house while I was traveling. She took extra time walking and playing with her twice a day and sent me a couple updates on how everything was going. Lisa not only cares about doing a good job but has a special love for animals. I definitely recommend hiring Lisa for pet sitting!

Peggy was always on time taking care of our cat Riley. He took to her right away. She is very kind and I can see why animals like her. We were gone three weeks and not once did we worry about Riley. She sent us pictures and let us know that he was okay. We will be hiring her again for all of our pet sitting needs!

Cheryl is magnificent! I met her through a friend and she has become a customer at the wholistic pet store I work at. She is nice, professional, and bakes wonderful wholesome treats that she brings for dogs whenever she is in the store. She clearly has a passion for animals and interacts with them very easily. Her knowledge of nutrition is excellent. I always recommend her when customers ask about caregivers.

She has comes off as a person with great integrity in character, which made it easier for me to trust my cat to be in her hands while I was away on a job training. I would say putting the care of your pet is her hands is not a great idea but also a smart choice!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32.
