Nick and his team were great. We had a laundry list of things for him to fix and he did it all. We needed carpet pulled up and tacks taken out, light fixtures put up, toilets unclogged, spigots fixed, gfci installed, and he surged protected the whole house! Needless to say he pretty much does it all and with great quality and amazing prices. We will be using him for other electrical work for our basement because he did a fantastic job! I highly recommend him and his team for sure!

I sent a request in to see if someone could fix my Lazy Boy chair and only 2 people responded. Mike from Aloha text back that he would like to see a picture of the chair but the picture didn't come out good so I made an appointment to take the chair out to him on Friday so he could look at it. We met and Mike said he could fix it for $75.00 which was a $150.00 cheaper then the other guy. I got an email from him on the following Monday that the chair was done. I picked up the chair and brought it home and discovered that the one bracket needed to be moved up a little. I text Mike and he offered to come to the house to correct the problem but I took it back to him because of time conflicts with me. I took the chair back to him and he made the adjustment and offered to return some money back to me but I turned it down and the chair is working fine now. Mike was very easy to work with and he did a good job and I would recommend him to anyone who needs repairs done. Thanks again Mike. Mike Kennedy

Tom is incredible! First, off we not the easiest to deal with and Tom was very patient and creative when it came to our indecision. He had some great thoughts and advice on where to hang pictures in our new house and I'm pretty sure he has become an expert on baby proofing for our inquisitive 6 month old by now. He is an excellent problem solver, which probably stems from his years of experience. He is quick to call back, quick to schedule, and uses his time wisely. I was hesitant to write a review because I would prefer to keep his services all to myself!! Excellent Job.

Nicholas Martin and his crew did an excellent job painting my basement for a party I was to hold on short notice. The job was excellent and they also trimmed some of my closet doors for me so the carpet would not bind when the doors opened. They will be back to paint the rest of my house. Dr Rick Davis

Sal personally came to my house to assess the job and provide the quote. He was honest and professional at all times. He installed a sprinkler system and a new drainage system for my home, and everything is working well. Any issues that came up, he was easily reachable, responsive, and eager to help. Overall, the price for the work was fair considering the work and attention that Sal put in. The only downside would be that the job took a little longer than expected. Nevertheless, I would trust Sal again if I needed anything done with my home.

Hector and his crew did an excellent job on our concrete patio. He spent time with us to get our best design layout, a stamped pattern that we love and helped us pick out colors that go well with our brick house. Hector and his crew are very hard workers that take pride in their work. I would highly recommend Hector for stamped concrete work

We are so happy we found Charles Moon on Thumbtack! He installed a ceiling fan in a bedroom, ran cable wires through the wall from the basement to the first floor and repaired two lights in the basement that had stopped working. Charles was very professional, showed great care for our house and the projects he worked on for us, and charged us a very fair price for his services. We would definitely hire Charles again! We are already making a list :-)

I hired Vini and his team to completely re-do the pillars on the outside of my house. Vini was professional, on-time and even made a suggestion on the paint color that made a huge difference in assisting to create the overall modern update to my house I was looking for. Many of the neighbors commented on how the house was completely transformed based on the custom woodwork that was performed on the pillars at my house. I would highly recommend Vini and his team for all future jobs that involve any type of custom woodworking or finish carpentry work.

We hired A.P. Carpentry to cover the eaves and trim of our home with siding. Additionally there is a Florida Room that only had weathered wood on it - we that room wrapped, too. It all looked so good we even had the front siding replace. It looks like a new house - and maintenance free! These guys are knowledgable, professional and hardworking. They provide a 5 star job at a reasonable price. My husband and I will hire them again to provide other services on our newly purchased 1958 ranch. Oh yes - their clean-up was immaculate!

I couldn’t be happier with the work Aaron did at our home. You can see his attention to detail in every aspect of the work. When he says he’ll be there at a certain time, you know he’ll be there. The photos are just two of the many parts of the house he worked on.

So far so good. Steve showed up and provided a detailed quote that was very fair. Steve is knowledgeable and honest, which is comforting when having someone paint your whole house. He had a guy out the next day to start prep and I was already impressed with the level of detail on masking off areas. I'll update my review when the Job is completed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
