Even during last week's heatwave, Frank was able to come out to fix my a/c the next day. I had previously contacted two other companies and was told by one they couldn't take on a new customer and didn't even get a call back from the other company after I left 3 messages. He cleared a clogged drain that had been leaking water all over my basement floor and topped my a/c up with 2 pounds of freon. There's no puddle in my basement and the house is cooler than it's been all season, all done quickly and for a fair price.

Matt did a really nice job for us on creating a walk in pantry out of an existing hallway. It required moving an existing door for the bathroom to the other wall, closing off that doorway, and closing off the hallway with a new wall. After a coat of paint, unless you knew the floor plan for the house prior to the new pantry, you would never know that hallway existed, or the bathroom door used to be on the opposite side. Very nice job, reasonably priced. Thanks Matt.

I hired Kent for a small drywall job involving a skylight shaft in my home in Ann Arbor. He started the project on schedule and finished ahead of time. The finished product was excellent. No surprises. I will certainly use him again and I recommend him to anybody..

Mr. Morris completed 4 jobs for me covering a three month period. 1) Involved rennovating my enclosed back porch by putting in a ceiling, removed/replaced surrounding screens & door, removed/repaired wood frames, installed electric wiring & put in a ceiling fan/light for first time, painting of woodframes, sealing bottom base bricks, and fixing gutters. Excellent job. 2) Installed gutters on garage for rain off, re-roofed garage & installed ventilation at top of roof. Well done! 3) Installed gutter brackets, repaired damage wood, repaired & fixed front house gutters for rain off. 4) Re-balancing of garage beams and adjusted tracks of garage door to prevent jamming or inconsistency of door opening or closing. All jobs were pre-appraised, with an estimate delivered within several days. Mr. Morris was very professional , detailed & courteous in explaining each job, cost, and timeframes. He exceeded all my expectations, in quality, timeliness, & proficiency, completing each job ahead of schedule. He cleaned up each area after completion of job very well. Partial monies paid up front and balance of bill not due until I did a walk thru & stated satisfaction of work done. I have told Mr. Morris that I will be retaining his phone number in my directory for future home repairs and have no concerns about referring him to my neighbors because of his professionalism and the quality of his work.

Mike was an absolute pleasure to work with from start to finish. 1) Mike took time to drive out to my house and correctly assess the window I needed which was a very specific, custom window. 2) Mike ordered the window promptly & was proactive by reaching out to ME when it arrived in order to set up an installation appointment. 3) The installation process was done professionally, efficiently, and Mike even took time to clean the outside of the window knowing I wouldn't be likely to get up on my roof & do it myself. Everything about my experience was top-notch and highly recommend Mike for any window installation). -Very happy customer from Northville, MI

P & G Contracting recently did a basement remodel for us. We had done a lot of research on what we wanted, and had several proposals before going with Phil and his crew. He had built our deck last summer, and re-shingled our roof after the hail storm so we knew what his quality would be. Our basement was not a simple put up some 2x4s, drywall and a paint job. It required some extra imagination to re-route some plumbing, put in a multi-level stairwell, and improved our heating and cooling. We also converted our egress window into a sturdy brick and cement exit including a bilco door. Phil is very considerate to the work site, and treats it like it is his own house. We are very pleased.

Scott and his crew are awesome. Scott is very easy to work with. He came out right away to look at our roof and was on time. He is very professional and makes the process very easy. I have never hired anyone to do a job this big and he walked me through everything with ease. The day of the install his crew was here first thing on time. They did a great job protecting all of our stuff (doubled up tarps and wood over our deck and hot tub and covered windows and doors) They worked all day and got it done in one day. The shingles look awesome. The house looks like new! They cleaned up everything and if it wasn't for the awesome looking roof you wouldn't know they were here. It is too bad Scott and his crew don't do decks cause I would hire them for other projects!

They did a great job for my windows. The owners son personally installed the Windows. I had hansons, and wall side come out and all they are good for is pressuring you to buy Windows. The owner personally came out to my house and measured my windows and explained technically what was good for me. I would recommend these guys over anybody .

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

        • Trim repair:
          • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
          • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
        • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
        • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
          • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
          • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
            • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
