Nick replaced a part in our Bosch dishwasher. The first person who came seemed puzzled by the Bosch, couldn't even get it our from under the countertop. We were considering the costs of removing tiles from the kitchen floor to allow the machine to slide out. We decided to pay another service charge to get "a second opinion." When Nick arrived, he pointed out two screws that were holding the dishwasher in place. Once those were removed, the dishwasher slid right out. Nick figured out what was wrong, ordered the part, installed it and voila! We got his card and will be hiring him to do some drywall repair in a couple of months. We highly recommend him.

Tom patched a couple of holes in the drywall in my bathroom ceiling. His price was reasonable, he was prompt, and cleaned up after himself. What's not to like. If the need arises I will definitely call Tom again.

I spoke with the Owner Mike, and I was able to get a same-day site visit with the installer, Robert. Robert was exceptional! Not only a really nice guy, but very thorough, courteous and certainly a master at his craft. A few days after the initial visit, our vinyl sheet kitchen floor was installed and beautifully finished. Educated as an interior designer, I'm very meticulous about detail and the finished product as well as the process involved.... Robert's installation was a work of perfection. I would recommend Simply Floors, Mike M. and installer Robert K. without hesitation for any flooring job - large or small whether commercial, residential, or hospitality. Robert K. is the best!

Holy Cow. Alex helped turn our unfinished basement into something worth showing off to our friends. Specifically he took a corner of our basement that was originally for storing old skis and revamped it into a workout room. Perfectly set drywall and crown moulding that looks like it was installed with surgeon's hands. The room is now fully equipped with hardwood floors and a wall mounted TV that swivels out from the wall and can be stowed away for extra space when we have our friends over for larger workouts. Aside from doing skilled work, Alex is an excellent man who was very responsible, honest and takes great pride in his work. In addition to finishing our basement we always find ourselves calling Alex for any work we need. He is incredibly strong, last weekend he hoisted a broken fridge/freezer from our basement and brought it out to the curb. Highly Recommend.

I moved into a fixer upper and it looked as though the original floors hadn't been cared for in over 45 years. Dan assured me he'd have the floors looking like new, but as banged up as they were, I had my doubts. As promised, my floors actually look brand new. New generation is dependable and professional. I whole heartedly recommend them for your hardwood floor refinishing needs.

Four Seasons/Dante Flooring was an easy choice from the flooring contractors I met with to talk about my project. They installed hardwood oak floors on first floor of my Royal Oak house. The demo and floor installation were precise and completed in 36 hours by a polite and efficient crew. The sanding, staining and protective polyurethane was again done quickly in 48 hours, again by friendly pros. My new floors are spectacular.

Granite Squared did ceramic tyle in my landing that looks like wood planks, granite counter tops in my bathroom and kitchen and the glass tile backsplash in my kitchen. I was worried about having a seam in my granite counter but Nick did a great job with the seam and you have to really look hard to find the seam.

I had an extremely heavy upright piano I wanted to scrap out. It had to go down 6 steps and across a newly installed wood floor landing. Once I contacted Antoine it was less than 24 hours he and his help arrived. He constantly kept me informed of his arrival time. Once they showed up they maneuvered the piano down the curved stairwell and took extreme caution once on the wooden landing. Antoine was very professional and polite. I would highly recommend his services.

Our job was complicated because a large part of our subfloor was concrete, and because there are three adjoining foundations. There were multiple surface variations, which required extensive prep work. Ned's Flooring has the skill and expertise we were looking for. Their workers stayed on task and on schedule. They quickly and professionally installed hardwood flooring throughout our home, and the results were truly outstanding. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for quality floor installation at a fair price.

Minor flooding in our basement essentially ruined our carpet pad. Since the carpet was old, too, decided to replace it along with the pad. Had 2 couches, a pool table, an entertainment center in that room. The Carpet Guys showed up on time, moved EVERYTHING, and put down the new carpet over 700 sq ft including stairs in about 3 hours. Professional job and hire Jose and Jose again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
