Bob, it was really great working with you today on my golf swing. I really appreciated how you took the time to learn what was troubling me most in my swing. Then you made great suggestions on how to make effective corrections as we worked through the whole bag. Hands down the best golf instruction I have ever had! Take care, Brent

Kevin has done a great job teaching my 6 year old to learn the golf swing. Kevin broke the swing into small pieces that helped my child learn without getting overwhelmed. He used games to teach as well. I would definitely recommend Kevin to anyone that wants to learn or improve their swing. Michael P

Carlo is a true professional. From his personality to the way he simplifies the golf swing is priceless. A golfer at any level can learn from his techniques and improve and I plan to send my son to Carlo this spring so that he to can learn the CORRECT golf swing right off the bat. As a long time golfer, I was frustrated with my swing. I had been experiencing pain in my down swing in my right arm. In just two lessons, Tedd helped me correct my problem! He also helped me develop a swing that allowed me to strike the ball more crisply. I would definitely recommend new and long time golfers to work with him. Tedd is very passionate about helping you achieve your goals.

Playing golf with Alan Johnson is always a great experience, one the most positive people I've ever meet. Your golf will improve just by watching how he plays and manages the course. I'm looking forward to the next time I have the opportunity to enjoy a round with him.

Tailored lessons to the individual

Having worked with many of the game's top instructors, one thought came to mind: How do we make the game easier and more enjoyable with less effort? That's why we started The Simple World of Golf. There certainly is no lack of golf instruction out there but the lack of instruction that is simple and easy to implement is. Understanding the golf swing can be made easier with my effective and simple golf lessons. We have had one goal in mind: to help golfers of all levels be their own best coach and have more fun without the rigors of long hours of practice. Don't get us wrong, golf takes work and you will need to practice. However, if we better educate you to not only understand your game but also to understand the game as a whole, you will have more fun and improve greatly. Simple World of Golf customizes instruction to meet your natural swing and skill level. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to improving your game. Our instruction is focused on improving and building upon your golf game, one element at a time, so you won't be overwhelmed after a lesson. We will work together to make you a better player in a way that's easy to understand.

Prior to considering my decades of competitive and teaching experience, you might be more interested to know that I understand the bio-mechanics of tennis and golf in a way that those I've taught find, well, uncanny. More importantly, my ability to convey these insights to any level of player, from a five-year old beginner to the amateur to the highly competitive, is where the "rubber meets the road" - ultimately I haven't succeeded unless I can find ways for the student to experience/feel the fundamentals for themselves. My professional tennis instructing career started at Cranbrook Institute in the 1970's while I was also training as a competitive player. I later earned my USPTA designation. I went on to teach professionally at Franklin Racquet Club, Oakland Hill Country Club and Beverly Hills Athletic Club through my competitive years and beyond (while earning Masters of Business Administration) before establishing a business career. (While I was active as a teaching professional I earned United States Professional Tennis Association certification.) Competitively I achieved a top ten ranking in Boys 18-and-under in Southeastern Michigan Tennis Association and earned a 4-year athletic scholarship to Oakland University-Rochester, MI where I was elected Team Captain and played #1 singles and #1 doubles. (I was also earned All State Honors as a high school basketball player.) I enjoy seeing students understand something new, and most enjoy seeing students experience/feel the implementation of that new understanding.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What makes a good golf instructor?

A good golf instructor is someone who has the playing skill you’d like to achieve, is qualified to teach golf, and is someone you can get along with. Some experts recommend you only take golf lessons from coaches with active accreditation from reputable associations such as the PGA, LPGA, or similar organizations that focus on continuing education. You’ll be spending hours out on the green with the pro during lessons, so a good rapport, strong communication and the right personality fit are key. A proven track record is also important. Read reviews from their current and former students to make sure they have helped people achieve their golfing goals, and always ask about the instructor’s experience before signing on for lessons. Years of providing lessons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to teach the sport. Just because your friend or partner is great at golf doesn’t mean they’ll give good golf lessons. Invest in a professional golf instructor who knows how to teach the sport from short game to full swing.

What age should you start golf lessons?

Golf lessons for kids can start as early as age four or five. They’re too young for formal training, but you can keep them interested and engaged and give them a feel for the game. U.S. Kids Golf recommends starting formal training for junior golfers at six years old. It’s important for young golfers to swing clubs that are the right length and weight for their body; U.S. Kids Golf provides a fitting guide.

Golf lessons for kids, especially young kids, should be about encouraging success rather than correcting mistakes, according to U.S. Kids Golf. If you want your child to love golf for life, you want their early experiences to be positive. Golf lessons for kids are less expensive than golf lessons for adults. A monthly rate (including four lessons) for group golf lessons for kids may average $100. Semi-private golf lessons for kids may range from $150 to $200 per month. Location and instructor reputation can also affect cost. Often, discounts are provided when multiple months are purchased at one time.

How much are golf lessons?

Golf lessons are a great way to break into the sport or take your golf game to a new level. The national average cost for golf lessons is $50-$60, but prices will vary based on what type of lessons you want. The most expensive golf lessons will be private instruction with top-tier coaches. These are golf instructors who have held high professional ranking and have a good reputation. Regardless of who is teaching, private instruction is always more costly than couples’ lessons or small group lessons (usually up to four people). Teachers often offer a lower price per lesson when you buy a package of several lessons at one time. Here are some examples of average golf lesson costs:

  • Individual lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 60-minute private lesson: $60.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $100.
  • Couples’ lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 90-minute duo lesson: $100.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $125.
  • Golf lesson package pricing:
    • Purchase six individual lessons at one time and save $10.
    • Purchase 10 individual lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase six couples’ lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase 10 couples’ lessons at one time and save $200.
