We have a 100 year old house and the hardwood floor under our bathroom toilet was buckling due to plumbing issues. David came out right away and quoted us a very fair price and gave us several options. We ended up needing new hardwood floors (so everything would match) and a new toilet along with fixing the plumbing. David did a beautiful job removing and installing everything. He was incredibly responsive as well with a couple tweaks we needed made. We are going to use him again for future projects. I would highly recommend him.

Since this was my first time using Thumbtack, Inc. I was a little taken back by all of a sudden having the names of several contractors provided to me. I chose to start by contacting two of them. Cole Concrete promptly set a time and date and the second contractor would only give me a 30 minute heads up prior to his arrival. I was impressed that Cole Concrete accommodated my schedule so that we could both meet and go over the work that needed to be done. So determined that he drove in a freezing rain ice storm with a weather advisory alert to make the appointment. By the end of that same day, I had a bid in hand with an acceptable price. Start to finish was a little less than two weeks and now the basement knee wall looks like a million bucks! Thank you Dylan and also to the other associates at Cole Concrete. MJ Schultz

We hired CKL to finish our basement since we were not up to the task and boy did they deliver. Craig and his son were very friendly and easy to get along with and their work was done very efficiently and in a timely manor. There was an attention to detail and they were quite patient with our overall picky nature. The basement was done about a week after they figured, which happens, but it was worth the wait. Having them in our lives for 4 weeks, I gotta say, I'm going to miss seeing them, they felt like more than contractors, they felt like friends. Thank you so much for our awesome basement.

I hired Bgp Construction group to remodel our bathroom. They really exceeded our expectations. The owner, Bryce Ploegstra, was very involved and even helped with decisions that were hard for me to make. We ended up hiring them to finish a bedroom that was under construction when they started. The contractors we originally hired were doing a terrible job, when they ever showed up. Bgp had to fix drywall, repair the ceiling, and finished it for us in a couple days. So great fun for this company and would highly recommend them!

Let me start by stating that I have worked with many contractors in my lifetime, and I am not easy impress. Honestly, I am usually left unsatisfied. This was not the case with Gilbert Construction. When John was out for the initial quote, he was punctual and prudent. I informed him that I was bidding out the project to other companies and he was understanding, patient, and respectful of that process. From my initial Thumbtack search to my multiple questions leading up to the job, John was always very responsive. After receiving 3 quotes for my new deck project, John came in at the fairest price. With John's expert input, I even changed the overall plan for the deck to better fit the needs for my family. This option was actually less expensive than the original plan, so it was in no way an upsell. I remain grateful that he cared enough to help me plan the right project to fit our home. He scheduled my job for a Sunday and finished the entire job in 10 hours with him and his other employee. I cannot overstate how impressed I was with their professionalism and quality of work. I had a challenging project and was VERY specific with how I wanted my new deck to curve to fit existing landscaping. He saw my vision and built the new deck EXACTLY how I wanted it. I am a true stickler, and paid very close attention to initial framing and support of the deck when they started to build early in the morning. I am no stranger to home improvement projects, whether I build myself or hire a contractor. This is, without a doubt, one of THE BEST decks I have ever seen built. After construction was completed, we sat down together and he guided me through the best ways to stain, seal, and care for my deck long term. I would highly recommend John Gilbert.

My family is surprised and delighted by the outstanding quality of work and service to our master bathroom! We hired JBJ for a complete redo of our master bathroom shower after having had a disastrous experience with a previous contractor. JBJ entered the project with absolute professionalism and helped identify not just cosmetic shortcuts the prior contractor took, but also significant construction errors with the previous work done in our home. JBJ fixed everything, finished on-time, on budget and even helped to document all of the errors they were fixing. In the end, JBJ saved the day for my family. We're very pleased to have hired such qualified professionals... the second time around. I only wish I would have called JBJ earlier!

My husband and I had hired a contractor last summer to do some interior changes to our home and ended up letting him go two days after he started because we were not satisfied with the quality of the work he was doing. We called Mike from Michael Aldrich Construction to let him know our situation. Mike was very busy at the time we called with other clients, but not only did he take the time to come over to see what had to be redone from the previous contractor, he finished the projects by working after hours. We were extremely satisfied with Mike’s work which he completed in a timely manner. We highly recommend Mike from Michael Aldrich Construction for his professional mannerism and his precise work that he goes over and above on. Mike always makes sure that you are satisfied no matter how big or small the job is. Give him a call, you will be happy that you did.

Sonnema Tile and Design gutted and remodeled kitchen and bathrooms. Painted and redecorated all of condo including all tile work and picking out furniture. Totally gutted and redid lower level after having been flooded, including bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and family room. Completely satisfied with everything Sonnema Tile and Design did, all the designs, the products, the workmanship, and the furnishings. Their work was very professional, they were very easy to work with and to have in my home. Would use them anytime I needed any further work done and would certainly have no reservations to recommend them to anybody. Could not be happier with all the results of their work and have had so many complements from friends and family and many have said that Nancy certainly understood me and my desires. I felt so confident in their design and work that most of it was done while I was out of state. Arrived back home 100% satisfied!

While searching for someone to replace the top boards on our deck, I selected (Elliot) Parcher Renovations after receiving three responses from Thumbtack contractors. Through the bidding process, Elliot didn't offer the lowest price, but earned my trust and confidence through good communication, sharing expertise, and providing options for proceeding with the project that I hadn't considered. The Parcher crew worked diligently and thoughtfully to complete the work, each day minimizing disruption to our home life. My wife and I commented several times about how considerate and attentive the Parcher team was - notably, in how they took time to tidy up the worksite so carefully at the end of each day. Our project included removal of a hot tub - which, after seeing what it took to do so, I wouldn't wish that task on anyone. I admire Elliot's attention to detail, and found his team well equipped to tackle the task at hand. Highly recommended!

These guys installed three glass block basement windows a few weeks ago. They did a great job and you would never had known they were here except for the beautiful windows. The workmanship was high quality, they were neat, efficient, and cared about the quality of what they did and care of my living area - I've never had contractors ALWAYS close doors behind themselves! So pleased that they are coming back tomorrow to install six double-hung windows in the rest of the house. Thanks guys and look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
