Aaron is one of the most professional and friendly contractors we have had an opportunity to work with. We've used him on several occasions and have recommended him to neighbors and acquaintances (who were also pleased). He has done painting (interior & exterior), remodeled our bathroom, replaced electrical outlets, installed ceramic tile floor in our kitchen and walkway, exterior gutters and trim. The completed work has been terrific! He is our go to person for any work we need done!

Mr. Peterson did everything a contractor a contractor should do to rate 5 stars. He showed up on time. He didn't ask to borrow any equipment from me. His quality of work is that of an artist not a master craftsmen. He cleaned up after himself. This is the 2nd most important thing to me next to quality of work. Lastly, there were no cost overruns. I would highly recommend Mr Peterson and will myself be using him exclusively from now on.

I cannot say enough great things about Al's work. I thought I was going to be in a bind when a different company became non-responsive however through Thumbtack I found Al and his company and he was very easy to work with. He met me at the job site to take a look at the repair needed on my schedule and provided instant feedback on what would need to be done along with an initial time estimate. His quote was competitive and the work was top notch. No complaints on the repair whatsoever, for a fix that included external siding, internal drywall, window replacement, and paint, among other things. On top of it, he was professional and very easy to work with. I would highly recommend Al for contracting and construction needs.

I've hired Top Jimmy Construction to handle many projects over the years. Mike has personally handled 2 of my rental units, my house and even my mother's home. There have been a wide array of projects that he has handled... Two full kitchen remodels (cabinets counters, and floors), tile work in utility rooms and a Florida room. Interior molding/trim/door work. External entryway replacement, plus various electrical and plumbing projects. Not only has he done excellent work, he is dependable! I, have dealt with numerous contractors over the years, I go back to Top Jimmy Construction almost on the communication alone. The reasonable rates really make repeat business a no-brainer!

We chose DJ Demolitions solely on ratings in Thumbtack and we are glad we did! Jeff and his team got the job done and cleaned up on schedule. Some people are hesitant and weary to pay half the cost up front which DJ Demolition requires before signing a contract, but being a freelance Web Developer I understand the necessity of this, and it was well worth the down payment. They give a final walk-through before they finish up, just make sure to double check that they've done everything you've requested, I did overlook a section of wall during this walk-through but they came back and took care of it! I highly recommend DJ Demolition and will use them again for future projects!

As a hardwood flooring contractor, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Paul for over 10 years. He is a creative and inventive thinker, and it shows in his work. His remodels, including kitchens, bathrooms and basements, as well as a 2nd floor redesign that comes to mind, are all stand-outs. He is responsive in communication too which makes it easy to recommend him to our friends and family. My wife, a Realtor, recommends him to her clients as well.

We have used Hewitt Building Co. on several occasions. Their interior finishing skills are masterful. Nick personally completed a job that required framing 35 floor to ceiling windows, seven doors and new base boards throughout our newly remodeled home. He and his team are professional, prompt, and respectful of owner's wishes and property. I would highly recommend Hewitt Builders to anyone looking for a quality, first rate company to complete their significant construction needs.

My husband and I had hired a contractor last summer to do some interior changes to our home and ended up letting him go two days after he started because we were not satisfied with the quality of the work he was doing. We called Mike from Michael Aldrich Construction to let him know our situation. Mike was very busy at the time we called with other clients, but not only did he take the time to come over to see what had to be redone from the previous contractor, he finished the projects by working after hours. We were extremely satisfied with Mike’s work which he completed in a timely manner. We highly recommend Mike from Michael Aldrich Construction for his professional mannerism and his precise work that he goes over and above on. Mike always makes sure that you are satisfied no matter how big or small the job is. Give him a call, you will be happy that you did.

We hired AD Remodelling to remodel our kitchen countertops and build some new cabinetry. Al, our contractor, was extremely professional, punctual and efficient. His estimate was very reasonable and he communicated very well about what he would be doing and about timeframes, etc. He was working on our kitchen within three weeks of the estimate and finished on time. He worked quickly and the finished product looked great. He also followed up to make sure everything was working out. I would use AD Remodelling again in a heartbeat and would recommend them to anyone looking for quick, professional and affordable remodel!

I had Ryan come in to do some mods to the bathroom for my dad (va grant). Ryan came in to take over for another contractor that left me hanging. The job went along pretty good. Had a crack in the shower pan, not his fault. Quickly replaced and the shower looks great. There was a time issue with getting the door done, but yet again not his fault. Door looks great and am glad we went with the pocket door. Also he suggested to go with the "fancier" door, but it fits the current door styles much better. I give Ryan a "thumbs" up, pun intended. Would recommend him for your next project.

This was a job that was due to a flood in my house. The toilet turned itself on and damaged two floors. Due to water damage the house was gutted. After the water dry up C H Home Improvement stepped in and had to renovate walls, floors, ceilings and more. My house was actually put back to a much more beautiful state of condition than before. His quality of work is superb. He has a definite talent, and creativity. A great eye for detail in the job. He is a very polite person which is very refreshing in a contractor. My floors are phenomenal, it was a great job.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
