Our front yard needed a major clean up due to overgrown weeds and trees and it also needed fresh mulch and new flowers. A friend recommended Thumbtack to get a qualified landscaper to do our job. I was contacted by two landscapers and we decided to go with Benito because he was very friendly and passionate about the job and what he could do to make our front yard look beautiful again. On the day of the job he was punctual and started working right away, I didn't even know he had arrived until I saw them digging up the weeds. He did not stop working the entire time, which I appreciated. He allowed me to check in on the job about halfway thru to make sure it was to my liking. In the end, my husband and I could not have picked a better landscaper to do the work. We are absolutely pleased with the outcome. So much that we have decided to have Benito come back to add flower beds to the side of our home. Thanks Benito! Great job!!! Monica

Never had much luck working with landscapers until I came across Tom and his company. I Had 4 other companies say they could come pick up some brush, 2 came and never completed the job, 2 just never showed up. Tom came and picked it all up in one hour the morning after I called. If you have a job and want it done right the first time. Give Grays lawn service a call.

I would highly recommend this company to anyone and it was a bonus that they were out almost immediately! They were very polite and communicated very well during the process and keeping me informed.

Tim did a small landscape project for me. He and his crew shoveled 4 yards of Decorative Stone and installed it in my backyard. He was on time and did exactly what he stated he would do. Very personable and easy to work with on my project. I would highly recommend him for this type of work.

Pricing was very competitive and Derrek offered some other incentives that were too good to pass up, so we hired Vintage Landscapes! Our spring clean-up is scheduled for next week. We've signed on for summer lawn mowing and fall clean-up. If all goes well, we'll be a snow removal customer, too!

I had a great experience with Hendrickson Property Maintenance. Jason is very professional and listened to the ideas that my wife and I wanted for our backyard landscape project. He quoted us a fair price and completed the work to our expectation. He was patient with our design changes and had great suggestions. I would hire him again for future projects.

Slainte landscape design was the most professional landscaping company I've ever dealt with. They did an outstanding job on an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, and sitting area out of brick, stone, and granite for us at our home. They were very reasonable with price and delievered the best craftsmanship imagineable. They were done faster than the scheduled timetable. Highly recommend to anyone and everyone in the market for any type of landscaping services!

Hired BLB Landscape & Tree to trim several large trees. They came the same day I contacted them to quote the job. Once I approved the quote, they came the following day to trim the trees. They came in slightly lower than two other quotes. Cleaned up the lawn prior to leaving. Will hire them again for future projects. Very friendly to deal with.

We had a massively over grown yard in the middle of the spring cleanup season. The automated emails for responses on quotes became a bit redundant but that did not in the least take away from the work this team did, in the middle of a vacation myself and the initial person I talked to went on a vacation, the team still managed to get the work done in a super efficient manner. More importantly they had ample opportunity to upsell and take me for a bit of money by doing a half way job on particularly some reseeding. Instead they advised me against paying them extra to do a job that wouldn’t have been right, they thought of ME instead of THEIR wallet, that says a lot these days. Great job guys and good luck.

This was a great team of landscapers to work with. Job was completed as expected and even worked with me on a couple of unexpected snags due to neighbor problems. They were on time as scheduled, finished when promised and were communicative throughout the process.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
