Deck Staining and Sealing

We just bought a house beginning of November and had Dave come out for an estimate. He was knowledgeable, kind and professional but easy to talk to. We had a deadline for movers unloading our furniture and he worked with us to rearrange things so he could fit our job in. We needed the whole house painted...ceiling, walls and trim. His prices were very reasonable. His team did an amazing job with fixing all the drywall both ceilings and walls. They started out in fairly bad shape, being able to see tape lines etc. They worked overtime to ensure the job was done when needed. They even were able to adjust things to add prep and paint for the stair runners. It was a tough job and they had me, a bit of a perfectionist, trying not to be too detailed. I did not ha e to babysit them like other painters I've hired. They knew the expectations and worked to them. When I did point out issues they addressed them without question, unless the issue could not be fixed. Overall I am happy with their work and will probably have them come back out when we are ready to put in hardwood floors and a fireplace.See more

when we posted on this site the first person to respond was Mr. Sandercott of Jam Restorations. he prompt response to our add was very impressive. when David came to our home he was very attentive to what we were trying to achieve and what we wanted as the end finished product. keeping in mind that we had (3) prior contractors come out and never even gave us a call back after leaving. David not only returned our call after leaving but had a quote for us the same day WOW.. Needless to say we signed our contract with Jam Restorations the following day. clear wording and easy to follow contract. David provided a start and finish date for us off we went. we hired Jam restorations to do the following work for us, trim (11) windows, (5) doors entire second and third floor as well as our stair case, (3) closets in and out as well as switching out and rehanging the (5) doors. David and his company not only met our expectations but exceeded them so much that we actually asked him to return to complete our first floor living quarters. David and his employees were nothing but professional and considerate of our time table and work schedule. I have had several neighbors come into my home to see his work and they were just as equally impressed as we were. we would Highly recommend him to others, a contractor who answers all of his calls and or gets back to your calls within 5 minutes... actively using jam restoration for other carpentry finishing work in my home. Thank You Mr. Sandercott for your excellent work, detail to finish and professionalism.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
