First, and foremost, J&R did a fantastic job! They were fast, efficient, and very very helpful! We had asked about tree cutting services last summer, and never moved forward with the project because of our busy schedules and finances. J&R reached out to me on their own a few weeks ago asking if we still needed services. I unfortunately I am on a budget right now, and was worried I would have to keep putting the dead tree in my yard off. Jose worked with me to get the important parts of the job done, while working with my budget. It was so beyond perfect! They came out and went right to work! They were very organized and even helped organize the wood piles. My husband and I are so happy with the work they did!! We will be contacting them this spring for some more tree services!!

They not did what I asked but also advised other needs that I did not consider. Instead of cutting tree down they advised to just trim it up. This saved me money and I was satisfied. They worked quickly and cleaned up everything.

Writing early because Thomas was exceptionally knowledgable, professional and polite! I expect his work will be beyond expectations and look forward to his crew coming out for lawn care and tree trimming. Thomas walked around the property and offered options for achieving goals in a safe and efficient manner. He knew the names of trees and plants instantly! His optimistic outlook for helping ancient trees regain vitality was infectious :) Again, looking forward to working with Thomas and his crews!

Brad removed PILES of leaves from my front yard then mowed just to make sure it was done right. Both myself and my wife, (who is a bit particular), were impressed with the work he and his worker did and the price was very reasonable. I am hiring him to come back in a couple months and remove a tree and trim two big oaks. They were very personable and pleasant to work with. The great communication and prompt service did not hurt one bit.

Price was very affordable. They were on time, completed the job on time . In fact our neighbor saw the job they did and ask them to carry out their tree trimming as well. CHC Total recently provided excellent tree services to my Dad. There were a couple of huge, bug infested trees that needed to be removed from my Dad's property. One was ready to fall on the house and one was ready to fall on a public road. Sam and his team worked 1.5 long days to cut down and remove these trees from the property. They did a fantastic job of removing all of the wood chips and logs from the property without damaging anything. Sam's team even removed some branches off of a few trees at no additional charge. Sam gave me before and after pictures of the trees. Sam also maintained excellent communication with me before, during and after the job was completed. CHC Total provided excellent value at a very reasonable cost. We will definitely be calling Sam and CHC Total for any of our future tree work.

Curtis was very easy to work with! He responded quickly to my listing, and came out the next day to set up an estimate. He listened to what I needed to have done, and then explained how he and his team would complete the job to meet my exact specifications. He was very thorough, and answered all my questions. I had received 3 previous estimates from other tree companies, and Curtis’ quote was spot-on with the other quotes. I choose Timber Beast because of Curtis’ professionalism, attention to detail, and I was not disappointed. We will be using Timber Beast for all of our future tree trimming/cutting needs.

Kyle has been doing our lawn for two years and we are extremely happy with his service. Our yard is about 3 acres, he gets it done quickly and is great about cleaning grass clippings off our driveway and sidewalk areas when he is done cutting. Also very good about letting us know if he is delayed due to weather or any other issues and needs to reschedule. Highly recommend!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.
