Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

What is the difference between a housekeeper and a house cleaner?

Although some house cleaning and housekeeping duties might overlap, a house cleaner is charged with the top-to-bottom cleaning of a home. House cleaner duties typically include basic and deep house cleaning, such as washing and sanitizing countertops, floors, tubs, toilets, kitchens and more.

Housekeepers or maids are hired to lightly clean and maintain certain aspects of the home. This might include dusting, washing dishes, changing sheets, doing some meal preparation and restocking the client’s groceries and personal care products.

It’s also worth noting that a housekeeper or maid is usually one individual employed to a home (sometimes hired as a live-in), while a house cleaner is oftentimes accompanied by a team of cleaners.

What should I ask a house cleaner or maid before hiring them?

There are many questions to ask a cleaning service before you hire them to make sure they’re the right fit. These questions might include:

  • How much do you charge?
  • How do you set your prices -- per hour or per square foot? Or, do you charge a flat rate?
  • What is your past work experience? Can I see a list of references?
  • Are you accustomed to working with different home or apartment types and sizes?
  • Can you work with children or pets in the house?
  • What types of cleaning products do you use?
  • Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and products?
  • How often can you clean my home?
  • Is there anything you recommend I do (or don't do) to my home before you arrive?

How often should you have your house cleaned?

The frequency you should have your house cleaned depends on several factors, and the best professional house cleaner can give you a rough estimate of costs so you can budget how often you need someone to clean your home.

Daily house cleaning may be necessary if you have a home with a large number of bedrooms with young children and kids, although other homeowners may benefit from weekly house cleaning. A weekly cleaner can clean the bathroom, kitchen, do laundry, vacuum and mop. An occasional deep house cleaning is most beneficial for people who have recently renovated a home or are looking to do a spring clean.

Brittany does an amazing job! My house has not been that clean in months! She did a deep clean of my house yesterday, making sure every inch is clean and all the dog hair was gone. I would highly recommend hiring her!

Brittany came in for a deep cleaning, and we will continue to use her weekly to help us maintain our house. We have two large dogs in a rental, and the dog hair and dust has been hard to manage. I came home today to a clean house that smells great! I haven't seen it this clean ever! I also trust her to come into our home when we are not here. She did a wonderful job and even put the dishes we had drying in our dishrack away. Thanks again Brittany!

Without prompting nor notes, GreenCo Cleaning tackled the toughest indications of dust, dirt, and dog hair, and they made my house glisten with cleanliness and care. They are very friendly and listened to my special requests. Their attention to detail is wonderful. I have glass top tables in my living room, and they made sure that the dirt and dust was removed from even underneath where the glass sits. My baseboards have never been cleaner! I will continue to use them, they are my go to cleaners!

My request was for a cleaning just before listing my home for sale. I thought this was an easy enough request. Make the house look 'clean' to prospective buyers. Windows, walls, and general cleaning. Here's where this review gets tough - the women who came to my house were hardworking, respectful and did a good job on the things they actually tackled but some of the things they left undone mystified me. They were kind enough to spray down the oven but left the area underneath the burners untouched. They cleaned the floors of every room but left cobwebs in corners. The windows looked great. The owner showed up to make sure things were going well (which seemed odd, but ok) and when I joined her and one of the cleaners in an upstairs bedroom letting them know that I only wanted windows and closet doors done in that room, I got a very confused look all around. Long story short there was that if you request certain services here on Thumbtack, don't ask for anything different on the day of the cleaning. (I'm unable to look at my specific request but there shouldn't be much variation on a deep clean for moving) The part that really bothered me is that while moving my things to clean my bedroom, my scale went missing. I messaged the owner about this, specifically asking if the cleaners might recall where they moved it to. She responded back asking which room it had been in to which I responded. I've not heard back and have since purchased a new (not as nice) scale.

I hired Brittany to clean my 738 square foot home it was empty not one piece of furniture except for a couch that was being thrown out from previous owner I asked her if she would take on the job she said yes a flat fee of $150 she told me she would text me the morning that when she would arrive at 8 a.m. I received no text I did call at 9:30 and she was there she claims she forgot to text me when she got there at 8 a.m.when I showed up a few hours later I was so disappointed!!! she claimed through the walk through the night before she would do an excellent Spotless Cleaning that would leave it sparkling since the house was empty she did not even wipe out my window seals she said she didn't do it because I had my house power-washed and inside the windows were what and she wanted to vacuum them out well most people vacuum and then wash them out afterwards at least that's how I clean out windows and the seals .when I went to turn my faucet on in my kitchen it was broken water went everywhere she did not even blink an eye as though she already had known she had broken it there was nothing wrong with the sink before she took the job on she had the laundry room left to do she claimed she had one towel left she wouldn't even help me with the water that was on the floor and under the sink I pointed out the areas where she missed and I'm quoting her" I did not know you wanted a deep cleaning "now gather this readers, I gave her $150 cash she grabbed her last Rag and used it on my small utility room and left afterwards I realized and I noticed everything that she had missed door handles light fixtures light switches that were dirty by fingerprints some moldings crevices in the backsplash of the kitchen ,now this house was empty only 738 square feet not much to clean and nothing in it she claim she would use the magic erasers the night before the cleaning when we went through the walk-through I would never recommend this woman to clean my dog house she knew about my sink she didn't even offer to help me with the water that was left on the floor and under my kitchen sink fortunately it was an easy fix the point is this young immature girl who claims that she's a professional cleaner, I am a 58 year old woman and I've done a lot of cleaning in my days at one time I cleaned 2 - 4. million dollar homes and then I have cleaned homes as small as mine as I have now I take a job on and I take it seriously this young girl did not! she ripped me off and lied and never called back and called me to see if I was happy with her performance I wonder why ? so you take it upon yourself if you would like to hire this girl to do your job now what is the difference between a cleaning and a deep cleaning or detail for what I paid my house should have been sparkling like she has in her ad good luck to all of you who chooses her one small footnote it's not that she ripped me off she just really overcharged me and lied about the performance that she said and claimed that she was going to give me good luck to all of you and God bless
