Handyman Tom is efficient, detailed and a great guy to work with! He is a hard worker and will not be done until you are 100% satisfied. He added 220 sq feet of wood deck to our existing old deck. We were nervous you would be able to see where the two meet but he made it look flawless, so happy with the extra outdoor living space!

We hired Kent and his daughter Betsy to replace rotted wood around our house as well as back deck. Their attention to detail and workmanship was amazing. They also painted two of the rooms in our house! We would highly recommend them to anyone needed wood work completed as well as paint jobs. They are prompt, responsive, and trustworthy.

when we posted on this site the first person to respond was Mr. Sandercott of Jam Restorations. he prompt response to our add was very impressive. when David came to our home he was very attentive to what we were trying to achieve and what we wanted as the end finished product. keeping in mind that we had (3) prior contractors come out and never even gave us a call back after leaving. David not only returned our call after leaving but had a quote for us the same day WOW.. Needless to say we signed our contract with Jam Restorations the following day. clear wording and easy to follow contract. David provided a start and finish date for us off we went. we hired Jam restorations to do the following work for us, trim (11) windows, (5) doors entire second and third floor as well as our stair case, (3) closets in and out as well as switching out and rehanging the (5) doors. David and his company not only met our expectations but exceeded them so much that we actually asked him to return to complete our first floor living quarters. David and his employees were nothing but professional and considerate of our time table and work schedule. I have had several neighbors come into my home to see his work and they were just as equally impressed as we were. we would Highly recommend him to others, a contractor who answers all of his calls and or gets back to your calls within 5 minutes... actively using jam restoration for other carpentry finishing work in my home. Thank You Mr. Sandercott for your excellent work, detail to finish and professionalism.

Bert did an amazing job with our kitchen and dining room updates. He handled our design changes and additions smoothly along the way. Bert was always on time and professional in every sense. Most importantly, he has a great attention and care for detail. Our home is very old, and he especially handled our cumbersome floor-plan & layout situations very carefully. He was also very skilled with 'creative' solutions for making sure we ended up with the finish result we wanted. Hire this guy!

I had Louie come put up some very expensive crown molding in my living room, kitchen, and bedrooms. Louie cut's his corners with a hand saw of some type. One end of the cut is a straight cut up against the wall and the intersecting piece has the detail of the profile cut out so the pieces interlock. I never seen anything like it but Louie told me trim is supposed to be cut this way so the joints never pop open over time. I had a small area where he put in new molding at the floor and he cut it the same way. I own a miter saw and can cut two angles to make boards fit together but Louie is a true craftsman and his work is remarkable! I would suggest Sentry Construction to anyone and have already done so. My mother is very happy with her new front door Louie put in also.

We had a water damage from a frozen pipe in the ceiling that destroyed our Kitchen, bathroom and half of our living room. Because of the damage we also needed to do some fixing in the master bed room. David was very kind, informative and very very neat and tidy. He did not try to talk us into the most expensive products but gave us options and let us choose. David paid close attention to detail and saw to it that everything was repaired properly and in a timely manner. We are very satisfied with his work and will definitely have him do work for us again in the future. We LOVE our new bathroom, kitchen, living room and master bedroom! I can honestly say that I couldn't have asked for a better experience

Brian painted the living room, dining/kitchen and hallway. Then he replaced all the ceiling and baseboard moldings. He added a central moulding down the long hallway. He did an excellent job. These rooms look great. I am very happy with the results. He also created a stone step at my side door which looks beautiful and works great.

Steve and his team were incredible. I needed our stairwell, dining room, living room, and kitchen painted. Steve was very punctual when it came to scheduling the estimate, start date, and all other communications throughout the project. His prices were fair and they did an outstanding job. All I was looking for was a professional team who would pay attention to detail and get the job done in a timely manner, and they delivered tenfold! I will be reaching out to them for our next projects, I highly recommend.

we had Shawn Mathis come to our home and do almost a complete renovation to our living room and dining room. He tore down all of our stucco walls, tore out all the old insulation (witch was old newspapers) shawn put in all new insulation, hung up drywall, did the mudding, sanding, (perfect with no lines showing) and painting (2 coats). He's very professional, fast, trustworthy, has very good ideas, and was ALWAYS on time and never complained. My fiance and myself are very satisfied with his work and we will definitely be using him again (so glad we found a great contractor) I would recommend him to anyone.

Woods Color and Design Consulting provided expertise while transforming my home into a work of art. WCDC consulted with my family on color matching, design details, and an overall custom interior painting of the entire home. Their patience was the best we've ever encountered front start to finish of the project. The colors flow throughout the home from room to room without any colors clashing.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

        What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

        • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
        • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
        • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
        • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
