Betsey has great makeup skills as well as communication skills. She put on a wonderful makeup on me for my bridal shower, she respect customers' needs and preference, always asked me what color shade or eye makeup or what kind of lip gloss I like before putting them on me. She is very professional and also very nice, which made my whole makeup experience just super.

Taylor was amazing! She did my bridal makeup- as well as my bridal party, my mom, and my mother in law ( 9 makeup applications total for my wedding day!) It was great to have a trial run for myself so I could get the feel of the eyelashes and see the whole look before the big day. By the end of the night my makeup still looked great- and it was a very HOT sweaty day in July, so that is saying a lot! Overall, Taylor made me feel like and look like a celebrity version of myself with her amazing makeup application!

I had hired Audrey and her team to hair and makeup on me and my 6 bridesmaids. They were very sweet group of girls and arrived in Rochester 15 min early to set up! Audrey and Mena (other makeup artist) literally bring EVERYTHING with them from makeup chairs to lighting and electric equipment. The whole booking process was very quick and easy. Do not pass up these girls!

Being one who loves doing their own makeup, found it somewhat difficult to make the decision to have a makeup artist do their wedding makeup. However, after finding Lisa my decision became clear this was the right choice! From the beginning, Lisa was punctual with returning emails, answering questions, and educating me about the makeup process. After conducting the trial run to the actual wedding makeup, Lisa was more than flexible to go out of her own comfort zone and give me the wedding look I was searching for. She nailed the dramatic look of a smokey eye, fabulous eye lashes, and flawless airbrush foundation. Each one of my bridesmains found having this type of makeup a breeze, pampering, and them looking beautiful. I would absolutely recommend Lisa to all those out there searching for a relaxing and professional makeup experience, of one you will definitely never regret and remember for years to come. Thanks Lisa!

Viktoriya was such an amazing person to work with! She put me at ease with the whole process and did such an absolutely incredible job for my makeup on my wedding day. Anthony is amazing. His spunky, fierce creativity and willingness to explore and push the boundaries of fashion are inspiring! Every shoot I have been able to work on set with him has been a pleasure. Some of the top photos booking me work and being viewed in my model book/portfolio are the shots from the photo shoots Anthony was makeup/hair artist and or creative director. Thank you Anthony!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

      • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
      • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
      • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
      • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
      • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
      • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
      • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

      • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
      • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
      • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
      • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
      • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.
