I needed to have the carpet in my basement (main room and bedroom) replaced. I went to Menards and purchased the carpet. I then put out a request to Thumbtack for someone who could do the following: tear out old carpet, dispose of old carpet, pick up carpet at Menards, and install carpet. I asked for estimates. Sage Flooring came in with the best estimate. Pat and another man (sorry do not remember his name) came, looked, and conquered my carpeting issue. Not only did they do a great job in my basement but when Pat went to Menards to pick up the carpet (which had been cut into sections--which was wrong) he was an advocate for me and let them know they should not have done so and had them cut new carpet the way it should have been. I am really please with their workmanship and their professionalism. I would hire them again if I needed any flooring to be done. Thanks again Pat for all that you have done for me.

We are very happy with the carpet installation that Trestan did in our lower level...(Office, living room, closets and bedroom). We had painted white trim everywhere. He did a careful job not to scratch white paint. The carpet looks great!...He promptly answered all of our questions along the way (via email and text). :) We got a very fair price on carpet through the company he works with to purchase carpet. I compared 6 + carpet installers and several carpet companies. His price was one of the best. :)

Nel was great. We are so happy we found him for our one room carpet installation. We did our due diligence and invited 3 different carpet installers to see the space and provide quotes, but he seemed by far the most knowledgeable. He is also affordable and super easy to work with being very responsive and communicative from start to finish. He messaged me when the carpet was ordered, when it arrived and verified our installation time the night before. Very professional and everything I look for in a vendor we use in our home. Thank you for the great service and excellent carpet!

Had my kitchen updated. I was pleasantly surprised by the timeliness the work was completed in, as well as the friendly and upbeat project manager that held my hand through every step of the way. Will definitely call for future projects. I already need new appliances installed and have booked an appointment for the winter.

We hired Steve from Painting Plus to perform a number of home maintenance projects including exterior painting, power washing, exterior screen repair, interior window sill repair from water damage and finally installing attic stairs and flooring for additional storage above our garage. Steve did an outstanding job on every project and we felt his pricing was fair. I would recommend him to any of my friends and neighbors!

Nicola with Your Way Flooring was very professional and a pleasure to work with. I'm the Maintenance Manager for a busy hotel located in downtown Minneapolis. Nicola arranged a site visit promptly and returned proposals to me quickly. There were strategic challenges with this type of job and Nicola and his carpet installers performed incredibly. We are delighted with the finished product! I certainly found my go to flooring contractor.

Will and his team were extremely professional and beat all of the other bids I received by several hundreds of dollars. They replaced the carpet and linoleum in my duplex that my tenants trashed. Their work was top notch. I highly recommend you hire this team and don't waste your time with other bids.

I have hired Rick for many "handyman" jobs over the years and I have always been impressed with his quality of work, timeliness and ability to tackle any job even in an old house full of unforeseen surprises. Rick has replumbed my house and fixed general plumbing issues, hung screen and steel doors, wired lights and ceiling fans, done sheet rocking, layed tile flooring, installed appliances, bathroom sinks and faucets. He has redone my steps to the upstairs by refinishing the wood, running a carpet runner and adding decorative railings. He really can do most everything you ask him to do. He is reasonably priced. I would definiteyl recommend him.

Brad did a bathroom remodel for my wife and I in 2010. What set him a part from everyone else for us is the fact that he was not only fair in his pricing, but pointed out other issues as the job was going on. Owning an older home, it had older plumbing, and some other issues with structure that he took care of. We had attended a number of home improvement shows and had other contractors out, that were high pressure to sign on with them right away, Brad allowed us to review his quote and was never pushy. Since this project was completed we had a backyard project that went wrong for us, and when I contacted Brad to see if he knew anyone that could help and he said he could look at the job, and see what he could do, he not only took on the job, but again fixed it better then the original contractor. I would give Brad a call on any project large or small

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is the cheapest carpet?

If you’re looking to reduce carpet installation costs, there are several ways to save. Start by considering your carpeting needs. Manufactured materials such as polyester and nylon will be cheaper than natural fibers such as wool. From big box retailers, starting prices for olefin-based carpet are approximately 50 cents per square foot — making the cost under $5 per square yard. Indoor carpets made with olefin fibers are typically the least expensive on the market. Keep in mind that olefin fibers are not as soft on bare feet as other fibers, so are often used in areas like basements, playrooms or indoor patios. Nylon and polyester are good options to reduce carpet installation costs while still creating a cozy feel. The face weight, fiber construction and density of a carpet all affect the cost per square foot. The cheapest nylon or polyester carpets can start at just under $2 per square foot, making them about $18 per square yard. Lower-cost carpet tends to wear out more quickly and show stains more easily, so avoid light colors and vacuum regularly to keep the fibers clear of dirt that might age it too quickly.

How much does it cost to install carpet?

If you’re ready to bring new life into your house with a makeover from the ground up, you’re ready to learn more about carpet installation costs. Installation costs vary greatly, depending on a number of factors such as the type of carpet, the number of square yards, any necessary repair work, the number of stairs you have, and where you live. Due to these variables, the national average cost of carpet installation ranges between $200 and $4,500.

To start planning for your new carpet, measure roughly how many square yards of carpet you’ll need. Research the main carpet styles and materials you like to get a feel for what they cost. Nylon carpets are typically the least expensive, and wool is one of the higher-end carpets. Prices per square foot might range from under $2 to over $10, depending on materials. Count the number of stairs you want carpeted; each one might average between $3 and $10 (or more for box steps). Carpet removal can be an added cost as well, averaging $1-$4 per square yard, depending on the company and regional disposal costs.

How much does it cost to carpet a bedroom?

If you’re building a new home, remodeling, or ready for new carpet in your bedroom, you’ll want to know carpet installation costs. Here are the factors that affect the cost of your new bedroom carpet:

      • Installation cost per square yard: From under $2 to over $6. Carpet companies have a labor cost per square foot for installing your new carpet. Depending on where you live in the country, that rate can vary greatly. This rate does not include the cost of the carpet.
      • Type of carpet: from $1 per square foot to $20 or more per square foot. The fibers that make up your carpet will have a direct effect on cost. As an example, specialty wool carpets may start at about $10 per square foot, while a manufactured fiber like nylon may be about $2 per square foot.
      • Removal of old carpet: from $1 to $4 per square yard. Old carpet is labor-intensive to remove and also costs money to dispose of or recycle. The cost to remove carpet will depend on how much carpet you need removed and whether your installation pros offer a discounted rate for installing your new carpet at the same time.
      • Subfloor repair: from $40 to $70 per hour (plus materials cost). If the flooring underneath your old carpet is damaged, it must be repaired before the new carpet is installed. Many carpet pros can offer this service, or you can hire a handyman to handle the job.
      • Type of carpet pad: $1 per square yard and up, depending on the thickness. The cost to install carpet pad is typically included with the labor cost per yard of installing the carpet itself.

How much does it cost to install carpet on stairs?

The number of stairs you want carpeted in your home will directly affect your carpet installation cost. Putting carpet on stairs generally increases the labor time and requires a higher degree of detail than laying carpet flat. Where you live in the country also plays a role in your carpet installation cost. Carpet installation companies in smaller towns with a lower cost of living and a lower cost to do business (insurance, company vehicles, employee labor, etc.) can usually offer their customers lower rates than companies in large cities where the cost of living and the cost to do business are higher. Carpet pros will often quote you a flat rate per stair once they do a site visit to provide an estimate. They’ll take into account the size of each stair you want carpeted (including both the step and the riser), and what type of stair it is. For example, the cost might range between $3 and $10 per stair for labor only. On the higher end of the spectrum, box stairs or staircase stairs with spindles that must be worked around might cost between $15 and $25 per stair.
