I was impressed with Steve from the minute we first met and shook hands. He listened to what my wishes were, gave great ideas when asked and never made me feel like I was asking for the moon. His stellar professionalism is hard to find these days, especially at an affordable rate! He followed up with a quote when he promised and got started on the project almost right away. We didn't make it easy on him having to communicate with 2 different people but he managed us just fine! What REALLY made an impression on me was how smart he was with his billing and follow up. He would send pictures of what he accomplished every time (I was only on-site once a week) and send very detailed invoices with a "Pay" now button, which made it so quick and convenient! He sent pictures of any receipts for materials he purchased that day as well. You just never know what you're going to get these days when hiring someone, but I can tell you - I definitely trust Steve and am putting him in my speed dial :) Tasks performed: clean/prep/paint kitchen cabinets, install new hinges and hardware, order and install new countertop, repair and paint walls, install backsplash "sticky" tiles, install under-cabinet lighting, replace electrical outlets, replace toilet components, fix a crooked bedroom door so it shuts quietly, and made any adjustments to work as we requested. AND he came in at estimate! No, he's not too good to be true! He's real!

Greg intalled a backsplash in my kitchen which included tile demo and installed new mosaic tiles. He also installed and finished new hardwood flooring in my whole house. The work was done in a timely manner and was very high quality. Greg was very pleasant and professional in all aspects. He thouroughly explained the work process and was very insightful at answering questions and planning the design. The cost of the projects was very reasonable and I will hire Greg again when I need further services. I highly recommend horing Greg and I have already given his number to several friends who are planning projects in their homes.

Don White recently performed tiling, wallpaper removal and painting for me. Don did an excellent job. His "administative process was sound - he wrote out a proposal of services, his price was for the work to be done - not per hour - and committed to a completion timeline. I feel his pricing was very competitive. The kitchen tile backsplash was done within the timeframe he committed to. He was on time, respectful of my time and cleaned up thoroughly. The tile work was straight, good spacing, and very precise cutting around outlet openings. I love the final product. i then asked to remove 30 yr old wallpaper. He comitted to the project and completed the removal as well as painting the room as needed. Don is trustworthy and has high integrity. I'll be following up with him for future hoome project needs. Pete installed LVT in my kitchen and laminate on most of the main floor of my home. He was extremely easy to talk to and really did a great job of making sure I was aware of all my options. He has a vast knowledge of all different flooring types and that really helped me make my decisions on what flooring I chose. I asked ALOT of questions and Pete was always patient with me and gave me thorough answers. I elected to order the materials myself and Pete helped me through that process and even found ways to make it work when I didn't have quite enough material on hand. He always kept me up to date on the progress of the installation and if any potential issues arose he always contacted me right away. Ultimately the end product looks great. With Pete's help I was able to bring my flooring up to date and it really just makes everything look better. Pete does a great job and I'm very thankful for the hard work he put into making my floors look the best they could! I would definitely work with Pete again and would recommend him to others.

Allan did beautiful work on our subway tile kitchen backsplash. We're selling our house but we know who we'll call when the time comes to update the new place. Thank you very much, Al for helping make our kitchen a selling point in our house rather than a fixer-upper!

I recently finished a kitchen remodel with Kohners and am very pleased. Everything was well communicated and everyone was easy to work with. There were a couple of snags, but knew that might happen when you start tearing things apart. We discussed options and went with altenative choices. The only delay was caused by my special order cabinets. Workers returned within a few days and finished the installation. I know it wasn't the cheapest bid, but Kohner was the only one that called back and followed through as promised. Will use again in the future.

Merl did a great job with my kitchen, taking the time to really understand my vision when other contractors thought it was silly. But, when it was all together, the combination of epoxy countertops and a penny backsplash looks amazing. Merl and her team were very professional, and they even gave me a discount after I smudged the wet countertops and she had to refinish them.

We had a tough job, the dishwasher was leaking and pulled up old tile, there was only the 15 leftover tiles we had from installing that floor 20 years earlier. Of course the manufacturer no longer makes that tile. They used the tile we had PERFECTLY, and found trim solutions to manage the tile we were short on. Our floor looks perfect and saved us from having to rip out the whole floor. They had to carefully take out the bits of tile to not disturb any extra space, dry it out, find that the tile was over linoleum and cut that out and fill, fit the exact pieces, and grout. Three separate visits. They were neat & tidy,on time, they guy even put a drop cloth on our floor for his tools to not scratch or leave dirt on the floor. It was not a "cheap" repair by any stretch of the imagination, but in being able to problem solve and deliver well thought out solutions. It saved us four thousand in pulling up the whole floor. So in overall satisfaction is high with this company because they took the time to give me options to NOT tear up my whole kitchen before I was ready. They delivered stellar work, great problem solving, and they shopped out the tile extra's and just put them in. They even matched the 20 year old specialty colored grout. This is not an inexpensive fly by night company- but a well groomed company that takes care of its customers and its employees. The guy that came to do the work talked about how much he liked working for that company and that they were a " real nice outfit". I needed a master craftsman to fix our little patch and we got one. It was not cheap or fast but it was stellar and worth every penny.

We got whole house remodeled by Yefri, including popcorn ceiling removal, kitchen backsplash, plumbing, recessed lights in every room, door and wall painting, woodwork refinishing, drywalling in garage, room extention and framing etc. He also got our rooms ready for wood flooring. He is just amazing. He will be upfront about the cost (which is very much in the middle... not super cheap but less then the expensive guys). Overall, this guy is just awesome humanbeing. Its fun when he is around and he brings work to satisfactory completion.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
