Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want.

Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June.

Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

How many photos should you get from a wedding photographer?

A professional wedding photographer will usually supply their clients with several hundred photos (200, 300, 400 or 800 and more). Some might even provide more than 1,000 photos. It ultimately depends on the photographer.

Wedding photographers will usually take several thousand photos but cut them down to the keepers. They also have to edit these photos. Typically, they will provide them to the clients on a digital hard drive, as an online download or even in a photo album with beautiful decorations.

What pictures should be taken at a wedding?

On your wedding day, your photographer should take pictures of the couple getting ready for the wedding, as well as a fun personality picture before activities begin. They should also photograph showstoppers like the bouquet, invitations, shoes, reception space, cake, centerpieces, rings and the veil. A generational photo with parents or grandparents is also special. There should also be photos of the bride and groom alone, the ceremony, the confetti-filled exit, and hair and makeup.

How long do wedding photographers stay?

A wedding photographer usually expects to work a full day. This gives them time to photograph the venue, cake, rings, shoes, centerpieces, invitations and other aspects of the wedding before the guests arrive. It also allows them time to get photos of the bride and groom alone, as well as the hair and makeup process and fun personality pictures. Then, they will work through all the parts of the wedding.

When should you take wedding photos?

Couples can take wedding photos before their actual ceremony, during cocktail hour (before the reception), during the wedding reception or even after their wedding. The least stressful time to do it is often before the ceremony when hair and makeup generally look their best, temperatures are usually lower because it’s earlier in the day and the couple won’t have to think or worry about it for the rest of the day.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Micah did an incredible job as our wedding photographer! He captured all the details & moments I wouldn’t have thought to ask for photos of, or even remembered from such a whirlwind of an evening. He was extremely punctual, friendly, & professional. Having him at our wedding was like having another old friend in attendance. You can tell he knows what he’s doing as he works with the natural lighting and your angles. And the photos came out stunning. Hiring him was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding. He is very reasonably priced & worth every dollar. We cannot thank him enough for such beautiful memories that we’ll cherish for a lifetime ❤️

I could not be more pleased with Alex and the work I have seen so far. We hired Alex as our wedding photographer, and he also did an engagement session. I have not seen the wedding photos yet, but did receive the engagement pictures. Alex did a great job making me and my now-husband, both of us rather uncomfortable with being photographed, look quite good. He managed to get quite a few photos of us with natural looking smiles and poses that don't look posed. He is a very skilled photographer with a knack for capturing candid moments, genuine smiles, and real emotions. We received a number of compliments from wedding guests who were impressed with how creative and hard working he seemed. I really enjoyed working with him; he put us at ease even though there was a camera in our faces. I would highly recommend Alex to anyone.

We really appreciated Cindy's approach to our informal outdoor wedding. She showed up on time, was fun to work with, provided excellent ideas/photo's and captured the moments dear to our hearts. As requested she delivered only slight photo edits, and they look fantastic. We were excited to see that the photo's were delivered in a timely fashion. Very nice work; Thank You Cindy! :)

Amber was absolutely incredible! She was nice and on time with everything and way faster then I would have thought without rushing you. As we were taking portraits I was worried that we would take too much time or not get enough photos but we were always done earlier then estimated. The photos turned out beautiful really capturing the little moments as well as the posed shots. She also contributed many ideas for poses and photos that were fun and unique. She did great with family hoots as well, helping round up and position the relatives. She also made sure to ask when we met before the wedding if there was anything sensitive in the family to make sure not to step on any toes or make anything awkward. Since there is divorce in our family and ex wives attended the wedding we did hav some very sensitive relationships but she was on top of everything and made sure everyone was photographed without any conflict or awkwardness. The turn around time was great! She had our edited hoots done in two weeks and I requested all of the raw files (since I am a photographer myself I wanted to edit them) and she sent all 1000 raw photos (34gigs) on a flash drive in the mail so I got every single photo (after she filtered out the blurry photos or a duplicates). The photos turned out incredible even unedited and her edited image were incredible as well. Too many photographers these days over use photoshop but she never does, always leaving a very clean and genuine image. Absolutely gorgeous! She was an absolute joy to work with and I received many comments during and after about her amazing people skills! I recommend her to anyone! I'm sad she moved away I would definately recommend her to any friends who are getting married. I give her 11 out of 10!!

Wow!!!! Our wedding photos turned out amazing! We have shared and everyone agrees....she captured it perfectly. Our dear friend and officiant said it best...she felt like one of us and a long time friend. She captured amazing smiles, laughter and joyful tears while respecting the awkwardness of social distancing. We can’t recommend her enough.

Rory was awesome. He followed up quickly after I posted for a photographer on Thumbtack. He was genuine and really was interested in knowing the occasion and what was important to me regarding the photo shoot. He seemed to be very flexible and laid back and did 100% thorough work! We went to Capital Grill downtown Minneapolos for a post wedding celebration and he took some amazing shots! He brought top notch gear, wasn't intruding and many of my guests were very complimentary of his skills and sense of humor. Thanks Rory! We will call you next time we have an event! Danielle & Chris

Charnell was a dream to work with. She is very creative, fun, energetic and makes everyone feel comfortable in front of the lens. She responded promptly to our first email inquiry about her services and was always responsive to any questions up until the wedding day and after. She arrived on time and stayed late to take extra pictures of the entire wedding group. Her prices are very competitive and she mailed the usb with proofs back within 2 weeks of the ceremony. Charnell captured our love and happiness in her lenses and we will have them forever. She has such an easy going style and wonderful warmth and smile to make you feel at ease when you're going crazy with nerves and excitement. We definately recommend Charnell for all your photography needs~you won't be disappointed.
