Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you tell if your fridge is broken?

Use your nose — and ears — to tell if your fridge is broken and it’s time to call a pro.

The first clue is whether your food is expiring too quickly. Your fridge should be at or below 40º Fahrenheit and your freezer should be at 0º, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If temperatures deviate from these figures, the result can be food spoilage (from too much warmth) or even a frost buildup (from a faulty freezer).

Other telltale signs that your refrigerator is broken are excessive noise, escalating electric bills and excessive heat from the back of the fridge.

If you think your fridge might be broken, don’t delay — contact the top appliance repair technicians near you today.

Is it worth it to hire an appliance repair technician?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire an appliance repair technician instead of replacing the unit or doing the repair yourself. The first is to keep your warranty valid — doing a DIY repair on a home appliance may void some warranties.

Another reason is having the proper tools. While you may need to go buy extra tools to perform a repair, a technician will have the tools ready.

Hiring a pro can also help ensure a long-term fix instead of a band-aid solution, as an experienced pro will be able to assess the equipment for function.

If you have a broken appliance, get free estimates from the best appliance repair pros near you to figure out if it's worth hiring a pro to fix it for you.

How much does it cost for appliance repair?

While the average cost of appliance repair is $65, the price can range from $45 to $120. A technician may set a flat rate or charge by the hour. The average hourly cost is $65, although this can range from $40 to $95.

Appliance repair technicians typically set their prices depending on the type of appliance, level of difficulty and other factors. Some pros may also charge a service fee or a consultation fee, and they might also offer discounts for new customers.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a refrigerator?

In some cases, it might be cheaper to repair a refrigerator — in others, your best bet is to just buy a new one. The decision to repair or replace a refrigerator will depend on several factors, but the most important is cost. If the cost to repair a fridge is much more than the cost of buying a new one, it’s time to replace the fridge.

To help you determine if your fridge should be repaired or replaced, get free estimates from the best appliance repair technicians in your area.

Is appliance repair easy?

While some appliance repairs like cleaning the inlet filter on your washing machine or cleaning a smelly dishwasher are perfect DIY projects, others are better left to the pros.

Certain jobs can be dangerous and risk extensive damage, such as repairing gas lines or leaks. Others require experience and know-how, such as balancing a clothes washer, replacing electric wires, rewiring appliances and more. If you’re not sure how to get it done safely, contact the best appliance repair technicians near you.

How long do fridges last?

Refrigerators can last 10 to 20 years, although the most common lifespan is about 13 years. If your fridge is acting up, consider its current age when deciding whether to invest in repairs or buy a new one. Common easy fixes include faulty thermostats, dirty coils and clogged drain lines. Thermostats and dirty coils can be generally be fixed for an average cost of $80-$100. Clogged drain lines, which usually cause leaks, can often be fixed for under $200.

More complex refrigeration repairs such as replacing a bad compressor or replenishing low refrigerant can cost more because of expensive parts and higher labor. A new compressor costs an average of $200, not including labor. If labor is an average of $75-$100 per hour, and the repair takes 3 hours, you’re looking at roughly $500. Consider the age and purchase cost of your fridge; investing $350 in a $600 fridge that is 8 years old may not be cost-effective.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
  • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
  • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

Do appliance repairmen or specialists offer remote or virtual services?

You should contact appliance repairmen and specialists near you before hiring them for the project to see if they can offer their services remotely or virtually. Appliance repairs are typically done in person, but you can ask if it's possible to have a virtual consultation or an online walk-through. If you see that a pro is offering remote services in their profile, message them to find out what those services include.

Who fixes refrigerators?

Typically, appliance repair technicians who offer refrigeration repair also work with washers, dryers, dishwashers and other household appliances. While there is no formal training required to be an appliance repair technician, consider certification requirements, as the technician should know how to safely work with refrigerants (the chemical that keeps your fridge cold) and substitute refrigerants such as HFCs. You should also read reviews to get a sense of the pro’s experience and reputation. The appliance repair pro will come to your home, bringing all the necessary tools for diagnosis. They may need to order parts to complete the job, but all the work will take place in your home. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

We had water pooling around the refrigerator so getting the repairs done on short notice was essential, or the kitchen floor would have been ruined. Yuri responded right away and arrived earlier than promised. He assessed the problem quickly, did the repairs and advised that there is a 60 day guarantee. We will definitely use him again if appliance repair issues occur again.

Very happy Yuri's work. I messaged Yuri in the morning that our dryer wasn't working and he had it repaired the same day. Additionally, he took the time to show me how to care for my washer and what issues to look for now that my washer is an older model. I will definitely use Yuri again if I have any other appliance issues.

Vlad was on time and was very punctual and polite. However in terms of helpfulness in repairing our appliance, Vlad fell very short and as a result we spent more money than we needed to and still have a broken appliance. After coming to look at our dryer, Vlad told us that the timer in our dryer was broken, and that there could be no other thing broken or wrong, the timer was the reason our dryer was not functioning. We opted to try and replace the timer ourselves because we had already replaced a few other components in the dryer prior to seeking professional help for this issue. The timer was not the issue with our dryer. We reached out to Vlad again to see if he could come back and take a look as his previous diagnosis (which we paid him for) was incorrect, and he told us he felt responsible and would come by when he was next available during his free time to help us. Weeks passed and Vlad never contacted us to set up a date to stop by and take another look at our dryer. It is unlikely that we will be seeking help from Solo Appliance Repair again after this. Truly dissatisfied.

I chose Hank Appliance Repair because of their good rating on Thumbtack. I was able to arrange an appointment for Hank Appliance Repair to service my Kenmore dryer which was not heating. I arranged for him to come by on a Thursday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. He made it at 4:15 p.m. After taking the dryer apart and doing some electrical testing, he was able to determine that the heating element was the culprit. He didn’t have the part even though I told him the make and model number of the unit ahead of time – he would have to go get it. Expecting payment for his service call, I wrote him a check for $75.00. Found out I would have to pay another $75.00 for him to come back and install the new part. That didn’t seem right to me. I suppose that could fall under additional labor but a second $75 service call fee wasn’t the best way to present his argument. The additional labor could have been more than $75 and that would have been fine. I understand. However I thought I hired him for one service call for $75 – not a bunch of service calls for $75 each. I felt that I agreed to one initial service charge plus any additional labor and parts – not two service calls. It could have been handled and explained and organized better. That wasn’t my biggest issue however. The technician/owner, Michael, returned to my house upon request because the dryer still wasn’t heating. To his credit, he didn’t charge me for that visit (warranty). A fuse blew inside the unit which he replaced. Further testing revealed that the main circuit fuse in the fuse box was blowing every time we turned the dryer on. After Michael replaced the fuse he let me know that the electric line to the fuse box may be faulty – his work wasn’t faulty. So I called an electrician and had the line checked from end to end. Just so no stone was left unturned, the electrician replaced the outlet and put a new cover on it. The electrician assured me that the line was and is working properly. So I tried the dryer again. Result was another blown fuse. So, by process of elimination, I was able to determine that the dryer was still malfunctioning. At this point my frustration was overflowing and instead of calling on Hank Appliance Repair for a third time, I elected to buy a new dryer. It took a few days to install as I needed to prepare another vent but when the new dryer was turned on it worked perfectly. So, in conclusion, Hank Appliance Repair missed something else that was wrong with my Kenmore. By doing so, I was subjected to lots of frustration and stress and expense for the electrician and the new dryer. Total cost was over $1,100 not including multiple trips to the laundromat to dry my wash. Would I hire Hank Appliance Repair again?? Well, I liked the guy and I like to support local small business endeavors. But I feel that missing whatever caused my dryer to blow fuses was too critical to warrant a rehiring. The job definitely wasn’t done right the first time. The unit was never fixed. I’m saddened that I can’t recommend this experience as a good one. Finally, I don’t like talking to people or technicians via email. Thumbtack leaves a lot to be desired regarding communication between customers and providers. I want a live person on the other end of the phone – not an email.
