Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Ryan from K9SF responded promptly to our request for an assessment of our 3 dog situation. Both Ryan and Milo came to our home to meet us and our dogs. They introduced themselves and how they approach training and assessing dogs. They spent time with us, us and the dogs and just the dogs and made recommendations on how they thought we should move forward. Once we have determined what we are going to do, we will schedule additional trainings. Thanks Ryan and Milo!

Rita was great and is really tuned-in to dogs and their personalities. I spent a wonderful hour with her ... for free... talking about how to train my dog to be more responsive to me. I have not been able to follow up with actual training session due to time and travel restraints, but will do so at earliest opportunity.

Tyler was very nice and made my dog feel comfortable right off the bat for the consultation. Definitely going to do training sessions with him.

We've only had 2 training sessions, but are pleased with the results we've seen so far and will definitely be scheduling more training sessions with Cameron. He has been very quick to respond back when asking questions and setting up future appointments, professional when dealing with clients, and really seems to love what he does. He's very straight forward about what works and doesn't work in dealing with our dog's aggression and anxiety issues. As long as you're willing to put in the work necessary to train your dog, Cameron will do the rest and we intend to keep returning for any dog training services we may need in the future. I can't say enough about this place, I only wish we had found him sooner! 😁

I got a call within an hour of sending an email to set up a free consultation! We just got a new rescue dog that desperately needs some basic obedience training. During our consultation, she had a bunch treats and toys for our two dogs to play with. She explained the way they like to do their training as well as tips and tricks for my immediate behavioral concerns. She was so flexible with scheduling our future appointments. We are so lucky to have found Canine Revival, and will be continuing training with them in the future.

Rita clearly loves dogs and knows animal behavior. She worked wonders with our Rat Terrier (and us for that matter!) I had looked at some of the dog training classes in the area and none of the times worked for us. What's great about Rita is she's flexible and works within your schedule. Also, the training is one-on-one which is not the case with classes. She works specifically to the level and needs of your dog. After each class, she leaves you with very detailed instructions on what she just taught you, which is great because there was always something I forgot. She also makes herself available by text if you have any questions. Best of all, she makes it fun for all. I know I will return to her to brush up or take our training to the next level.

Lori at Brown's Dog Training, Lodging, and More was FANTASTIC! Our Pitbull lab turned one when he was with Lori. He chewed on everything, including us - jumped on everyone, pulled us along as we tried to walk him, and chewed through more wires than I thought was possible. He was very loving though which lead me on a hunt for a dog trainer! Lori texted me and answered all my questions as fast as she could while running a business. We went to her house and met with her when we dropped Norbert, our one year old dog, off. She made promises to us, and frankly, I didn't think it would be possible to turn this destructive dog around. A few weeks later - she gave us a call and said it was time for Norbert to come home. We met her outside and she got Norbert out of her car (yes - she transports!!) He didn't jump, he didn't pull, and I thought, "Anyone can be good for a few minutes." She came inside for our "Train the Human Time." She kind of had to laugh at me as she trained me - but I think she left with a little confidence in me. I eventually got my dog to listen as well as he did to Lori. She left - and he still listened! He is a very good dog now that we can take into public, and more importantly, not worry about him being around our toddler.

We brought our puppy, to Canine Revival for private training. We had previously taken a puppy classes at a pet store chain, but found that there were too many distractions to be able to get much accomplished (food everywhere, other puppies, etc.), so we opted for private classes. Rita took time to get to know us and our dog, Gus, and helped us with teaching our him several obedience commands. She gave many helpful tips and had lots of fun stories. Rita is very passionate about training dogs and was very generous with her time and her knowledge. The facility was great as well. Gus loved his training sessions! A+

We had a terrific walk and he showed me how to be calm so my dog is calm. I learned more in one hour than I had learned in a 6 week puppy class with another trainer. Highly recommended!

Working with Rita has been a phenomenal experience. She is professional, knowledgeable, but more than that she is an excellent instructor. You explain what you need and she has a resolution. Rita makes training easy. She makes sure you know how to work with your dog. Her hands on training gives you the knowledge and confidence to continue training. Both you and your dog will benefit from working with Rita. It’s reward based and fun. Don’t worry if you’re not getting it Rita is a phone call away. Her time with you is not just a schedule and we’ll talk about it on your next visit. She is there in between to guide you. I can not say enough about this remarkable woman and Canine Revival.

Roxanne went right to work with our 8 year old, 70 lbs. St. Bernard mix. After the training seaaion, our dog was relaxed and loving life. We are greatgul for Roxanne's insight into what is "really" going on with our reactive pup.

We bought a training session for my mother-in-law and her rescued pitty for mothers day. Crystal was fantastic! She came to the house and was working miracles during the first session. She is clearly well educated and experienced in her field. My mother-in-law was so pleased with the results. We would recommend her to anyone and any dog!!

This was our first time working with a dog trainer and Crystal exceeded our expectations! She taught us a few techniques to keep our 7-month old puppy from jumping on us and others and it seems to really work! She also gave us some great tips on types of toys that would keep him busy and stimulated. She was extremely helpful at explaining to us why our dog was behaving in certain way and showing us techniques we can use to lower his energy level. We will definitely be recommending her to others!

My name is Cecil-I am a standard poodle. My people were all using different words & hand gestures, so I would take control because clearly they were confused. I would mouth their hands and jump up on them to get attention. One day, Roxanne from Crazy Dog Training, came over and she taught them how to communicate with me. It was so great to have a translator!! Finally my family and I can understand each other. Thanks so much Roxanne-for the awesome training and support!!

We had a great experience at Canine Revival LLC. Our puppy Ozzi was 7 months at the time. He was a playful, energetic , springer who at times was overwhelming. Rita taught and demonstrated commands, gave us helpful suggestions and sent us home with handouts for his training. Ozzi loved going to Rita's to play with lots of toys, get treats, and lap up lots of attention. He thought he was there just to play. She gave us confidence and encouragement and taught us many things beyond training so as to better care for him. She has lots of experience and education. Her care plan for him was breed and personality specific. Our dog and we were all well cared for by Rita.
