Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: Copy editing is more than removing errant apostrophes and ensuring subject-verb agreement. A good copy editor will find and correct all your technical mistakes. A great copy editor will find and correct mistakes and maybe offer some advice on cohesion or consistency. A copy editor who really loves what they do will correct mistakes, tighten up passages, ensure consistency in everything from folios to character development, make suggestions in the margins, and eagerly anticipate reading your final, published work. A passionate copy editor is a passionate reader, someone who recognizes the power of media, who wants to make sure your best work is what hits the market and makes your name. One of the things I love most about copy editing is how often I'm reminded that even the best writers need it more than they know. Punctuation, spelling and grammar seem to be the first things that go out the window when someone is passionate about their subject matter; being able to take someone's raw material and apply a critical, objective eye to it, pruning and shaping and making the language and message fluid, speaks to the detail-obsessed linguistic in me.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I happily, but accidentally, ended up on the yearbook staff in high school. My family moved partway through my freshman year of high school, and one of the classes I wanted to take at my new school was full. Someone decided that yearbook was a good substitution, and so I found myself assigned to learn the ropes by assisting the editor-in-chief. By the end of the class I had pointed out so many errors in "completed" spreads that the editor-in-chief told our adviser that I was going to be the new copy editor. Being recognized for something that I was so blatantly good at and enjoyed doing so much made me confident that I had found a niche for my energy and talents.
