I love this industry, as a Martial arts and Z-Health Neural Performance coach I am lucky in being able to spend my days helping people become better. Being able to help people breathe, see, move and feel better, helping them be the best athlete they are capable of becoming, it makes my profession not a job, but a pleasure.

    I had known James for about a year before I started training with him. He was a customer at a coffee shop I worked at, and he was just "the weird trainer dude who put MCT oil in his coffee". :) Then when I started training with him, I realized how beneficial his knowledge base could be for more areas of my life than just lifting or physical movement. He has a vast knowledge of how the human body works, which influences his training technique, how he coaches you through tougher movements, how he helps you heal, and how he gives advice on other areas of life (nutrition, habits, self discipline, life in general). Some of James' coaching may feel silly and weird and uncomfortable at first, but once you start following his plan and guidance, you see yourself and your capabilities change. I came into James' classes barely being able to hold myself up in a plank, and using very light weights just for basic movements. One of the last classes I did with him I was deadlifting 175 pounds and doing hand stands! After 6 months of training! (I honestly never believed I could do either of those things!) I think Minneapolis definitely lost out on James moving away, but I'm glad more people get to train with him!

    Being told by your doctor that you are borderline diabetic and in high risk blood pressure territory is never a good thing. I decided that working with James was a way to start on the right road. Turns out, it was the best decision about my health I could have made. After assessing my abilities and potential improvement points, James set me on a course for better diet, achievable training results, and effective neurological triggers that I could employ to reverse the damage I had caused. In the six months I have been working with him I have lost 55 pounds, completely left the at risk diabetes category, ceased my blood pressure medication as my doctor recognized the results, and am now outpacing my kids in activities.     James did a fit assessment with me, and taught me some Z-health corrective exercises. The exercises dramatically increased my range of motion and posture within a half an hour. I consider him highly adept.

    James is an outlier. He should be the norm, the standard by which others are measured. In my career as a coach, inventor, entrepreneur and overall fit pro, the input, guidance and education James gave me established the key turning points of my progress. Q&A

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
On our first meeting there will be an assessment process, I use the Functional Movement Screen and Z-Health assessments to set the baseline for the client. What are they capable of, where are the risks of injury, what are their personal goals. This process usually takes 30-50 minutes. After assessing their needs and abilities, I help them find targeted mobility drills and exercises that will get them moving toward their goals as fast as possible. Workouts are challenging, but not difficult, focusing on the skills the individuals need to perform the way they want to perform.Almost everyone walks away with a few drills that target their Visual and Balance skills. Improving people's vision and balance skills helps them navigate their days and have more energy and agility, and reduces their stress levels so well, that we use strength and endurance as assessments instead of workouts.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am constantly investigating the fields of neurology and physical culture, there is never a day where I won't be found buried in a book, searching articles and journal entries on pubmed, listening to lectures and taking courses to further develop my skills as a coach and a practitioner

How did you get started doing this type of work?
After being in a car accident, and being severely injured, I found myself not able to participate in the activities I loved. My physical activity was reduced, I was constantly in pain and I could not move or perform the way I wanted to. I found Z-Health, and was immediately hooked. Aches and pains melted away, strength went up, I gained close to 30 lbs of lean mass and grew an inch in 1 year. I could also get back in the gym, and then and now, still find myself keeping up with or outperforming other people 1/2 my age. At 40+ Z health and the systems I employ with clients has made me better at everything.
What types of customers have you worked with?
For the last 5 years I have primarily worked with professional coaches, 50+ professional executives, and high school or college multi sport athletes. Having had the opportunity to work with people from such a broad age and background range gives me a perspective not many may share.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
An online coaching client contacted me recently to get some help with his program, he had lost 40 lbs and come off 2 medications in 3 months, so his doctor cleared him for more vigorous work.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Don't believe anything I say, investigate all of the ideas and actions, filter them through your experience and then make a decision based on science and results.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
That it is easier to be better, than anyone wants to tell you. Your body, a notepad and a pencil can be all of the tools needed to get amazing results.
