I needed movers to help move my 2 bedroom 1100 square foot home, into a 3 story 1600 square foot town home. After spending hours researching moving companies , I settled on On Call Services and I'm very glad I did! J.T. and Andre were right on time on the busiest moving day of the year (June 1st.) They went over the paperwork right away, listened well to instructions, wrapped all furniture with care, pointed out any existing damage before moving an item, and carried large, heavy items up and down many flights of stairs. They were professional, funny, careful, and worked at a steady pace. It took 7.5 hours to get it all done, only stopping for short water/coffee/donut breaks here and there. I was actually surprised they didn't take more breaks... We ran into a small issue of fitting everything into the 20 foot truck, but the guys rearranged a few things to make sure it all fit. They even assisted with final placement/assembly of some heavier items in my new home. Words I would use to describe this company: reliable, professional, safe, affordable, friendly! Even though it took longer than I had initially anticipated (doesn't it always?!), J.T. and Andre helped everything go smoothly. I also want to thank Dominae and Tasha for being so courteous and thorough on the customer service side. They were so friendly when speaking with me, and sent a thorough confirmation email of my requests, charges, deposit amount e.t.c., after booking. I'd highly recommend On Call Services to anyone, and would do it all over again in a heartbeat!

Tanner and Alex showed up on time. They were personable and professional, and took great care of my things and even took the trash that I had to get rid of, over to the dumpster at my new place. Their rate wasn't the lowest I found but it was very fair and was in line with amounts that I've paid before. I would definitely recommend them and will use them again (just hopefully not for quite a while cuz packing and unpacking sucks😛). Thanks Tanner and Alex for taking the heavy lifting off my hands!!!

We moved many boxes and heavy furniture...it really was a three person job, which was suggested...but the third person only showed up for a short time. The job took 12 hours and it was a very hot day!!

The team showed up and got right to work. They made the move as easy as possible by doing all the heavy lifting. They customized their work to fit my needs, even working around the carpet cleaning guy. Quality, punctual, professional work.

These guys ROCK! I will be hiring them again for my next move. They called me on their way to my house. They were on time and they had the truck loaded in an hour. I just had them load my furniture which is big and bulky. There were about 35 pieces. I moved into a townhouse which has a ton of stairs. They only took one 5 minute break which was well needed after carrying up a very heavy dresser. They had me all moved and settled in 3 hours. I forgot about my bed and then went back to get it. Amazing job and well worth every penny!!!

Terrific guys, worked so hard to lift heavy cabinets and took not a break during the 4 and 1/2 hours it took them to move furniture between three houses. I would recommend them--Brandon and Andrew.

Rob and crew did a great job of hauling away a heavy basketball hoop with a huge piece of concrete attached. We felt his pricing was fair and we were impressed with his integrity. We would definitely use him again and would recommend him to friends/family.

I had a pretty simple job--moving a piano. There were no stairs involved, but it is a VERY heavy almost 100 year old upright piano. The guys did a fantastic job covering/wrapping it and keeping it safe for the ride. They also did an excellent job maneuvering through my house and taking care not to bump corners. They were also friendly and communicated well. I would recommend!

College Moving Labor was AWESOME for our move! They are exactly what we were looking for: a couple of responsible bros who could lift heavy things. We had a fairly complicated move as we had two apartments being consolidated into one house with lots of different levels and furniture going in all different places and they handled it flawlessly. I love that they arranged the truck rental for us, too, so all we had to do was open the door and tell them where stuff went. We actually scheduled our move fairly last-minute during a pretty busy time (end of the month) and they worked us into the schedule without any problems. We initially decided on two movers but they brought three since our move was later in the day and required more time. I'm glad they added the third guy because it would have taken a LOT longer if it were just two. These guys are the real deal: they are genuine and don't overcharge in the slightest. Prices are very fair and the work is comparable to the much more expensive big name movers. I will recommend them to all of my friends and I will certainly hire them again for other moving projects. I hope that Dustin decides to offer more services (clean up, disposal, etc) so that I can work with him again!

I had a really big move - lots of heavy boxes, heavy furniture and fragile pieces. These guys worked steadily all day both days piece after piece and got it done - no breakage, no complaining, very respectful and polite, and super-helpful. They went above and beyond to help with things I wasn't comfortable doing - electronics set-up, how to use an electric fireplace, advice on various things. There wasn't any "we don't do that." And the whole time I felt my things would be safe with this team and that I could trust them. I would use them again in a heartbeat.

Everything from initial contact, through ballpark quote to the actual move went according to plan. Paul's estimate was right on the money. The crew was efficient, courteous and did some very heavy lifting with good humor. Nothing broken or damaged, everything accounted for. Excellent choice of movers.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.
