Whilst searching the web for a voice coach/instructor/teacher for my 17 year old grandson who wished to study Classical voice, I was delighted to find on Thumbtack a teacher who not only taught Classical voice, but also a review from a woman who included in her praise the statement that Mr. Sellen taught with encouraging critique and not negative criticism. This struck me as a very important teaching quality, especially for a performance art. I am very grateful to this lady because my Grandson has had the most excellent experience with Mr. Sellen. Right after the first lesson, my grandson was beaming, elated, and for the first time was talking about the possibility of his singing a solo in upcoming high school concerts. After only three lessons, two-weeks apart with some inconsistent practice in between, he had significantly reduced his feelings of self consciousness, extended his range and improved the quality of his quiet tones. Notably, his high school choir teacher who has very high standards for her praise, was enormously complementary about his improvement, noting his increased confidence, but particularly the extended range of his singing and his ability to maintain a consistency in the tone and various intensities of sound. In her words he: Has expanded exponentially as a singer and has gone from saying over and over that he would never consider a solo to begging for one. Although we were happy to make the hour drive to Minneapolis from Wisconsin, this made us determined to keep up the lessons. My grandson attributed this not only to Mr. Sellens delightful method of teaching, but to his emphasize on proper breathing and utilization of breath support. In addition to the breathing technique, my grandson says he has also acquired a growing understanding of how to interpret the music itself, and to be aware of what he calls melodic phrasing, and takes even more pleasure than before in his singing. In addition Mr. Sellen is very helpful in coaching the proper pronunciation of Italian songs. My grandson who had only studied French at first had found this difficult, but surprisingly quickly made the transition. He is now planning to audition for the Minnesota Opera Camp this summer. He is confident as he can rely on Mr. Sellen to help him choose a song that will fit his particular strengths rather than a song chosen for the appeal of the lyrics and music. He has the greatest trust in his teacher, because he not only has a marvelous teaching method and a mastery of the piano, and is a sensitive accompanist, he has successfully taught choirs for many years, and his authenticity is sealed by the fact that in my grandsons words, This guy has an awesome voice!. My grandson has gained so much from studying with Mr. Sellen, that his younger brother is showing interest in studying also. I would strongly recommend without reservation, this kind, warm, gentlemanly teacher, who has an exquisite singing voice for Classical and Opera coaching. I would also suggest any mentor of a student who wants to sing popular or rap music to study some Classical music with Mr. Sellen. My Grandson tells me that even if you just enjoy singing pop and rap (which he also enjoys) It really gives you more wow power!

Rick has been teaching piano to my 9yr old daughter and myself for over a year. He teaches us both on the same day with back-to-back lessons. What always amazes me is how he can shift from my daughter's lesson to mine with such ease. He relates incredibly well to both kids and adults and has proven his ability to teach both effectively. Rick is encouraging and enthusiastic! He's incredibly patient and flexible. He has sparked a love for music in my daughter that is a true testament to his own love of music and his ability to inspire others. Rick is more than just a piano teacher to us. He's our friend and we hope he will continue teaching us for years to come!

Rick is a standout piano teacher and our entire family looks forward to his weekly lessons with my 8 year old daughter. He has been with her for almost a year and is patient, encouraging and incredibly enthusiastic about her learning, her progress and her capabilities. He uses every minute of her lesson time wisely and looks forward to her time with him every week. She does so well with piano only because he has engaged her and is teaching her in a rewarding and upbeat way. He's very, very good and we look forward to having him teach our younger two when they are old enough to play. We are very grateful to have Rick's expertise and experience contribute to our daughter's growth.
