Nick did a great job for us. Enameled woodwork/interior doors, repaired very damaged walls from wall paper removal and painted multiple rooms. He was efficient and did beautiful work. I will be having him come back to do more work on my house and I recommend him to everyone.

Barry completely transformed our master bedroom. It was a project we had put off for several years. He was able to give us an entirely new bedroom in three days. Removed a closet wall, repaired all walls, removed old wallpaper, painted the entire room. Work quality was amazing and a price we could afford. Will definitely call Barry in the future.

Ryan did an excellent job. Scheduling an estimate was easy and he was able to get us on the schedule right away to have our dining room + kitchen painted. He did some minor wall repair and the rooms look fantastic. We couldn't be happier with the finished look!

It was a very good experience working with Jam Handyman on my small condominium’s masonry work. We had a brick archway above an exterior window removed and replaced. He was prompt in assessing the work, providing a bid, scheduling the project, and doing the work. Additionally, he completed the work with some time to spare so did a few extra tuck-pointing areas around the building outside walls – all while coming in almost 10% under the original quote. If needed, we would gladly work with Jam and his team again!

I was having a hard time finding someone to build an interior wall to partition off a room in our new home. Bruce responded and immediately told me it wouldn't be a problem. He provided me with a pretty accurate and detailed estimate before we got started and his crew that ended up doing the work were great. They even did quite a few extra things around the house (installing a dishwasher, fixing a broken storm door jamb and a wobbly step) that I really appreciated. I would definitely hire Bruce and Apex Construction again. They were a pleasure to work with and Bruce is definitely a people person :)

I hired Stacy to provide plans to remove a wall and design a new modern fireplace/tv wall facade on a separate wall. She was extremely professional and easy to work with. She worked through several design options and did not mind making tweaks until I was completely satisfied. She was also very helpful recommending other providers for ancillary services. I would definitely work with Stacy again and recommend her to others.

They were great! Only ones to respond. I had a big hole in a wall and other companies didn't care to do just a small job. Noelge Drywall came to the rescue. He said no job is too small because he wants to help anyone who needs it. They did a great job, very efficiently and it looked like there never was a hole. The estimate was very detailed so I new exactly what was being done and the price to do each step. Very professional and very kind. I knew I was in good hands. I would definitely hire them again!!

Harald patiently went through our painting projects, giving tips on ones we were doing ourselves, and gave us the most reasonable estimate for the work. He painted our kitchen and living area (lots of cabinets and wall prep involved) and did an excellent job in a very timely manner. We will definitely consider him for future jobs!

We needed a wall built in our finished lower level. Cory was able to get to work right away and the quality of work is wonderful. Cory went above and beyond cleaning up each day before he left. The work was done when he said it would be and for the price he quoted. We have already hired Cory again to paint our home. I recommend Cory highly.

Great working with Allan, probably contacting him again for more stuff needed around the house. Fast, thorough, mudding of walls took longer than expected, he kept at it and came back twice to finish and the wall looks great. Glad we found him!

Homestead did many things including a whole bathroom that was torn apart and put back together with new flooring, walls and tiling. they put a new ceiling in downstairs and made other minor jobs. I had a couple things that I wanted different and Ken was available to talk to and make changes. His people doing the work were great. I'd use them again. Everything turned out better then expected.

Gerry was great to work with; he responded quickly to my request and arranged a time to see our job and give a quote within days. His quote was very detailed, giving a good idea of cost of supplies needed, as well as his estimated labor. In the end, the total was only 7% more than the estimate. Once we gave the go ahead, he was right on time with his estimated start and finish date. Gerry did quality work in repairing rotting beams on a swing set, stripping/sanding/re-staining front porch and railings, fixed sunken patio pavers, repaired a gate, and a few other misc items. I would recommend Gerry and I would use his services again.

I would highly recommend Wilmer Vazquez for any interior painting needs you may have. I hired him to paint my commercial photography studio with really high ceilings, large walls and terribly worn/stained concrete floors. I had originally hired someone else who failed to show up for the project. I called Wilmer last minute and he came right over to quote on the job. He did both the walls and the floor in one day and came back the following day to move all of the furniture back into place, He was extremely responsive to all of my phone calls and questions and arrived to the job early both days. Both Wilmer and his partner took great care to do the job very thoroughly and cleaned up everything when they were finished. The quote was reasonable and the work was extremely high-quality. I will definitely hire Wilmer again. He's a true professional!

Although the job was originally scheduled to be completed no later than on Friday, on Saturday Blake and his employee were here on Saturday evening finishing the project. Now given the fact that it was Halloween weekend, and there were kids involved, I was quite pleased that Blake and Cory showed up to finish the job on Saturday evening. They did an excellent job with some very bad walls, and I would have no hesitation recommending them to any of my friends. Thank you so much Blake and Cory - you have NO IDEA how much you saved me!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

    • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
    • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

    • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
    • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
    • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
