I got in contact with Gina Walleat through Thumbtack while searching for an interior designer to help me with remodeling my basement. Gina's portfolio caught my eye right away and I was very pleased when she contacted me to schedule an appointment to come out to my house. I felt confident in my choice after speaking with Gina on the phone, and was even more impressed with her after meeting her in person. Gina is very knowledgeable, has a great eye for design, has wonderful ideas, and at the same time is very easy to work with. Her ideas and recommendations are always followed by knowledgeable explanations and she has many ideas on how to change/improve/incorporate new designs. The space I'm working on is over 1000 square feet: a bedroom, living room, and bathroom, and with Gina assisting me, I feel like I'm on the right path. I already feel like the final results will be greater than I expected, and the path leading up to it is fun and non-stressful (as remodels are usually the opposite). I typically leave reviews if I'm blown away by the service or just plain appalled. Bonnie falls into the latter category as she has no grasp of the concept of customer service, and has no skills beyond decorating in the traditional style. I don't know if she's a certified interior decorator, but she certainly didn't act like one. Though I hired Bonnie, I eventually decorated my place myself. Till this day, my friends, tease me saying "you wasted your $ on a fake interior decorator when you could have simply done it yourself.” Here is a summary of my interaction with Bonnie: During our first meeting, I walked her through my apartment and provided a clear explanation of my design ideas, in addition to sending pictures of the decor pieces that I wanted. She corroborated everything I said, and also said this “oh, this project should be easy.” Following our interaction, all she had to do was buy similar decor pieces to the ones I showed her. Also, I offered to go shopping with her to prevent any mishaps. She turned down my offer, saying that she shops for multiple clients at the same time so it won't be helpful to have me there. She then went shopping and showed up with pieces that are not in any way related to what we discussed. During our interaction, she said things like "I don't know what to do with your bathroom - it's so big" and "you can't have big throw pillows on a medium-sized sectional (erm, says who?!)"... She said many more things that simply made no sense coming from an "interior designer.” When I told her I didn't like the pieces she bought as they were not in any way tied to my vision, she had the nerve to say I was "fast becoming her client from hell." Following that interaction, I told her that I would no longer be needing her services, but I paid her 75% of the cost we had discussed. Note that at this point, Bonnie had not in any way decorated my place, so I simply paid her for the time that I assumed she invested. When she left, I realized that I had obtained nothing from our interaction as my apartment looked exactly the same! So, I asked if she could help arrange/hang-up some pictures and art pieces on my wall - as a means for me to at least gain something tangible from the relationship, and she flat-out said no. I reached out to the Thumbtack team and they agreed that she was in the wrong, but they couldn't do anything since we didn't sign an agreement. Overall, I sense that Bonnie is good at decorating in the traditional style and maybe she’s good with working with older folks as clients. If you don't fall into either of those buckets – older or have a traditional style. I highly suggest you look for another interior decorator.
