I spoke with a handful of dog trainers and I felt the most connection with Shahar. So I hired her : ) We talked on the phone about the behaviors and set up our first training session. She came to our home and was very personable and professional. From our conversation on the phone, she pretty much already knew what corrective training we would work on, therefore, we didn't spend most of the time talking and got a nice portion of the time doing the actual training. It will be tough for all of us as we are about to flip our pups life upside down but Shahar assured me that he will be much happier this way. I will be working with Shahar on follow up trainings until our pups behavior issues has been corrected!

I got a call within an hour of sending an email to set up a free consultation! We just got a new rescue dog that desperately needs some basic obedience training. During our consultation, she had a bunch treats and toys for our two dogs to play with. She explained the way they like to do their training as well as tips and tricks for my immediate behavioral concerns. She was so flexible with scheduling our future appointments. We are so lucky to have found Canine Revival, and will be continuing training with them in the future.

Lori is the best dog trainer that I know in Twin Cities! She is patient, and makes it fun, brings it to your home environment where the dogs are more relaxed. I also board my dog here as well. She is the cheapest, has better quality care for my dog than anyone I know. Best quality for the lowest price. She has trained my dog to be perfect! She bonds with the animals so well that they automatically listen to her, and even the most aggressive dogs aren't intimidated and will respond to her. I would recommend going to her before anyone else, you won't be disappointed. She cares about the people and the animals very much. My dog, Buddy, is a westie terrier and goes to doggy daycare here also. He gets along with everyone. Great!

We hired Mandy to come to our home for a dog training session to work with our Chihuahua Boston mix, who is unpredictably aggressive to people and dogs. She was flexible with our schedule. She asked all of the right questions to fully understand our dog, and was great at reading his body language to get to the core reason for his behavior. We've been following her advice and have seen improvement in just a few days, and looking forward to continuing to teach him some better manners! Overall our experience was excellent, we highly recommend Mandy at Terra Paws.

Dedicated, loving, knowledgeable, caring, and maybe part K-9. I couldn't recommend a better trainer for your dog not matter if the task is big or small. I have worked with her for over 4 years with many dogs and situations. She has personally trainer 2 of my dogs. One from a puppy and another we had behavioral issues with who is stubborn. She took on both tasks with full dedication and heart. Can not recommend enough!

This was our first time working with a dog trainer and Crystal exceeded our expectations! She taught us a few techniques to keep our 7-month old puppy from jumping on us and others and it seems to really work! She also gave us some great tips on types of toys that would keep him busy and stimulated. She was extremely helpful at explaining to us why our dog was behaving in certain way and showing us techniques we can use to lower his energy level. We will definitely be recommending her to others!

If you are looking for a professional dog trainer, you have found that person in Jim Diem. Jim was knowledgeable, professional, flexible, and compassionate in helping our family with our challenges with our shelter dog. We were unprepared for a dog with fear aggression, and upon a happenstance meeting with Jim our lives changed dramatically. Jim worked with our dog and our family to improve the quality of our dog’s life, as well as enhance our understanding of how an informed owner should behave. Jim was not the first trainer we worked with. He is the only trainer we will work with now. We are indebted to Jim and his expertise for all he has done for us. Thanks Jim! Beth Hanssens + Family

Cheryl is absolutely fantastic. She was patient and kind with my dog as well as me. I have a rescue dog from a puppy mill and after two months I never saw my dog she hid all the time and i was at the point of wondering if anything could be done. I called Cheryl and she reassured me and made an appointment to come out quicker than I ever thought. When she came over she gave my dog the personal attention i couldn't get from the books and experience. It's one month later and my shy little dog had completely changed. She wags her tail jumps on the couch and even likes to be pet. Any time i have a question I can still always write or call Cheryl and she promptly responds each time. she came to our aide again and made it possible for me to keep my dog . It was obvious she cared about each specific person and animal and it is much more than just a job to her. When i was laid off She is a life saver. My dog is my life and thanks to her now we are sharing our lives together.

I loved working with Katie. She is very experienced and loves bully breeds which isn't always the case with dog trainers. I worked with BAT training with my leash reactive pittie and she not only trained me on what to do, she gave me tons of ideas of what to do at home (realistic scenarios). She is also very positive. No negative dog training at all. Katie also will continue class even if most people don't show up so it feels like you get a lot of one on one time. I would definitely recommend Katie as a dog trainer.

John Ketzner played a key role in the development of my dog and myself as a dog handler. John presented me with the tools and techniques necessary to be successful, then helped me perfect and tune these skills to make them work for me. John takes an individual based approach to dog training, realizing that not all dogs nor handlers are alike. His genuine care for the well-being of the animals shows in the rapport and relationships he develops while working with them.

Paul arrived and explained the Bark Busters training process to us. Skeptical that it could actually make a difference on the first day, we began the work. Not sure if our dog was overly tired or if she actually was learning a more submissive roll that first day, we were amazed at the changes we were already seeing! She was a totally different dog the next day and has been since. She has been amazingly responsive to the techniques and much more behaviorally appropriate. Although we are still learning the process, we see improvements in ourselves and our dog every single day. The Bark Busters Method really does work! Paul believes in what he is teaching and it's obvious in his work with dogs. We look forward to our future sessions with him.

Kristin and her team of trainers at For the Love of Dogs did a fantastic job teaching us how to training our Britney Spaniel (Maya) to go from an unruly ball of energy, to a loving, family pet. During our vacations, Kristin boarded Maya and provided a friendly stay in the evenings, and in-depth training during the day (who knew dogs could run on a treadmill?). She readily answers questions on follow ups post classes or stays. Thanks Kristin!

I met Denise through my vet when looking for a puppy. The timing for a puppy was not in the cards at that time, however, we kept in touch. We are now training together with my first working line soon to be one year old female GSD. Denise has been a wealth of knowledge and is a wonderful trainer. Phone calls and/or messages of any kind are returned in a timely fashion and a professional manner. She is very patient and explains things well and I need this given this is my first go round at training. We had worked with another trainer for a short period of time and that wasn't working well for us. Am glad for that because it landed us at Denise's door. I would not hesitate recommending Denise for any breeding and/or training needs. We are beyond pleased with the services we are getting.

Jeff did an excellent job with my dog Mac. I visited several trainers and what he achieved with him in eight weeks others said was impossible. they said I should just keep him as a house pet and buy another dog. What he can get a dog to do is amazing and because of him, Mac is now a house pet who loves to hunt, retrieve and swim. I couldn't ask for a better dog.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
