About this pro

How does your business stand out?

I put a strong emphasis on fundamentals and getting the student to know and understand what he/she is doing-not just go through the motions of doing it. I once had a student, a 15-year old girl, who had previously taken lessons from another guitar teacher for a year. She was a bright girl, yet after a year of lessons she did not know how to tune her guitar and she did not know any chords! All her previous teacher did with her was "dissect songs" as she put it.

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

I like seeing a student progress and knowing that I had something to do with it.

I feel very fortunate to have found Bruce for guitar lessons for my daughter.  I had other guitar teachers before but none of them were of the quality of Bruce.  He has a well grounded lesson plan and is teaching my daughter how to properly play a guitar vs. just teaching her to play notes or chords on a page. He is very personable and professional and knows how to convey ways to improve without sounding critical.  He welcomes questions and is willing to vary the routine (adding in holiday songs or a song my daughter really wants to learn) to keep things interesting.  He is even taking the time to adjust a more complicated song my daughter wants to play to her skill level.  My daughter loves to play the guitar and I have no doubt her interest is being maintained by her lessons with Bruce.

    Guitar Lessons By Bruce
Bruce is awesome. He is patient, and knows how to not only teach guitar, but tune the lessons depending on how I am doing week to week. He keeps it lighthearted while we progress. Highly recommended.

    Bruce Hoff guitar lessons
Bruce is thorough in his lessons. I have some knowledge of the guitar. Bruce is making sure that what I have learned, that I understand why it is what it is. Bruce is very patient and wants me to learn correctly. He's even working on breaking some bad habits I have already developed. Very happy with this teacher.

Bruce recorded a live concert for us and provided a Master CD in which to have additional CDs burned. He was professional, set up well before the concert, was out of the way and was efficient in set up and tear down. The final product was good and fun to listen to.

Bruce is great to work with. Very friendly, great sense of humor and a patient teacher. In addition, he has gone out of his way to work around my schedule and find lesson dates and times that work for me.

Bruce has been an excellent instructor throughout my first year of guitar lessons. He continues to impress me in presenting new ways to learn as well as in regards to being patient in re-instructing a technique or guitar nuance, when I may have forgotten or overlooked something I was previously shown. I would gladly recommend him to any student (adult or otherwise) with the interest in learning guitar.

When my daughter Cady was 9 years old she started taking lessons from Bruce at a music store near our home. Unfortunately, the music store went out of business after about 8 months of lessons. Cady decided to take violin through her school. After two years of violin lessons Cady wanted to resume guitar lessons. Bruce was so good with her the first time around that I decided to call him. She was very shy at first but Bruce is so good with her that she warmed up to him rather quickly. Having a great teacher like Bruce makes lessons fun for Cady. He's very patient with her and makes sure that she understands each lesson. When Cady had a special request of learning some Christmas songs Bruce emailed the music to me so that I could print it for her. He has been coming to our home once a week now for about 6 months. His prices per lesson are very reasonable. He's always a little early (which is really on time) and he's very accommodating with our schedule changes. I highly recommend Bruce for guitar lessons!

I have really enjoyed taking lessons from Bruce! I am still new to it (began lessons ~4 months ago) and feel that I have learned so much! I tried taking lessons about 3 years ago from another instructor, but found myself frustrated and overwhelmed. I ended up quitting after about a month. I thought that perhaps I was too old to learn an instrument (it was my 40th b-day present to myself). However, Bruce has a teaching style that is organized and logical. He listened to my motivations and goals for wanting to learn to play the guitar and guides me each week with enough to challenge, but not so much that I feel defeated. He has responded to phone calls and emails within the same day and I appreciate his flexibility with lesson times and locations as well! I fully intend for my daughter to take lessons from Bruce as soon as she is old enough. I fully recommend giving Bruce a call if considering guitar lessons!!

Bruce has been teaching our son guitar for over four years and is an excellent guitar teacher - very patient and very flexible. He works with our schedule and is always on time and reliable. We would recommend him as a teacher for both younger children and older.

My son has been taking lessons from Bruce for years. I appreciate the way that Bruce has been able to instruct, communicate and keep him engaged from grade school through high school. I highly recommend Bruce Hoff.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I try to make them reasonable. I have not changed my prices in years.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have an associates degree in electronics, which included a class on audio. I took guitar lessons for ten years. I have a life-long interest in music and audio.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
It was by accident really. A friend of mine, who had been my guitar teacher, called me up and asked if I wanted to teach a group guitar class. He was scheduled to teach it but his schedule would not permit him to do it. I interviewed for and got the job.
What types of customers have you worked with?
For recording, my typical (and preferred) customer is someone who has never recorded before and knows nothing about the process. For guitar lessons, my typical new student is probably 10-15 years old and has never had guitar lessons before.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Just because someone is a good guitar player that doesn't mean they're a good teacher. Playing and teaching are two different things. Teaching means conveying one's knowledge to another person. Ask questions. Ask what the potential teacher teaches and how they do it.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
A common complaint I've heard from many fellow teachers over the years concerns payment. People seem to think that it's no big deal if they fail to pay the teacher on time and can just say "I'll get you next week" and everything will be fine. For many of us, teaching is our livelihood and getting paid on time is just as important to us as it is to anybody else.
