Deborah sent Benjamin out to my home to inspect water damage I had. He found that the water damage was minimal and gave me suggestions to dry out the area myself. I was worried about the potential for mold growth and Benjamin and Deborah were very reassuring that there was no concern. There was no charge for this assessment. Benjamin offered to return for a free recheck if I have concerns. Shortly after Benjamin left, Deborah called and encouraged me to call and have Benjamin stop by to reassess the damaged area next week, free of charge! The speed and customer service this company provided was amazing. I would not hesitate to use them again and would recommend them to anyone with water damage issues.

I hired Easy Landscaping to repair some damage to my property and replace some sod. Jacob is great to work with! They were prompt, prepared, and professional! They even added on to the job by getting some gravel to spread on my driveway. Due to my own schedule, I won't actually see the final completed project until tomorrow, so I can't comment on the quality yet, but I expect great things. And his prices were very reasonable. I'll definitely hire them again!

I’m so pleased to find Kel Heyl on Thumbtack as now he will be available to even more homeowners. Kel has done work on and in my home since 2004, from very large projects to small tasks. I love that he is such a careful, creative and meticulous craftsman – his work is never slapdash. I’ve always been very happy with the results, and can recommend him highly to anyone interested in having work done on their home by somebody who knows what he’s doing, and will do it well. Built screened porch, based on his own design. (2004) Removed a chain-link fence and posts. (October 2004) Removed textured ceilings in living room and dining room. Ripped and installed new molding for both rooms. Installed a chandelier. (April 2010) Installed a new entry door to porch, including altering and adapting the jamb. (June 2009) Hung antique coat rack. (2008) Installed a new pre-hung access door for garage. (June 2009) Re-screened porch panels damaged by cat and raccoons. (July 2011) Hung a magnetic knife rack. (February 2012) Re-shingled garage roof, first removing old layers down to bare wood. (August 2012)

Picture this. ...a flooded house, with endless tussle with the insurance company and a gloomy moldy smell , until I met Julio. From hard wood floor installation, plumbing in the bathroom, installing a storm door, refinishing partial basement from water damage to helping with other handy jobs that were not even part of the agreement, because he is s perfectionist. The best part of it all was his professionalism. He treated my home with respect and I am happy to come home again.

I needed a roof replacement but I didn't want just anyone to do it so after hours of research on roofing companies and shingles I decided to hire Top Notch. All the research paid off as Nick and his crew put on the best looking roof I've ever had on any house. The high grade product he used, which he upgraded for me at no extra cost, have a lifetime warranty which means I won't have to worry when the next hail storm hits. The whole process was so stress free and quick that I was pretty amazed. Along with my home, I have a three car garage and an addition and from start to finish, the roof was done in 7 hours. The crew went above and beyond as well as they saw my gutters were clogged so they cleaned them out while they were up there. Nick took care of everything and did everything he said he would and when he said it would be done. No waiting hours or days for responses fro him either. Every time I contacted him, he was there or got back to me within minutes. He even found additional hail damage that the insurance claims people didn't see. He will be submitting that to my insurance company as well. All in all I couldn't be more impressed with the completed project and would recommend Nick and Top Notch to anyone.

We had Apex evaluate some water damage at our business. They proposed a couple of different solutions before beginning the job, depending upon whether there was more/less damage than they expected to find. Once the plan was in determined, they executed the job quickly. They repaired some damage wood framing and then bricked up a former window that had not been sealed properly in the past. The work looks good (hidden exterior on commercial building, so beauty and detail weren't necessary) and was fairly priced. Communication was pretty good, but there were a few times where I had to reach out leading up to starting the project, to get details about where in the process we were. Overall, I am satisfied with the work and would use Apex again.

I took a big chance, and asked for someone to fix a guest bathroom door that wouldn't shut all the way because the bottom of the door needed to be planed. Casey responded right away, and was at my house in 10 minutes!! He also fixed a problem with my storm door lock which has been bugging me for over a year. He is awesome!!

It is so hard to work with insurance to get the right amount money to fix damage done to your home. I am so glad we had Andrew and team on our side! Andrew came a couple times to evaluate the extent of the work then worked with our home owners insurance to get us 6 times the amount of money that was initially thrown at us by the insurance adjuster. He was very adept at maneuvering through the red tape, etc. Even then, with Homestead's persistence, it took us several months to put our home back together after a 3rd floor toilet overran all night!! Darn insurance companies! Despite all that hassle, Greg was a great project manager and the subs were all respectful, on time, and communicated well. I would definitely hire Homestead again.

Jim was fantastic, not only was he able to accommodate our tight schedule on short notice, he came out despite the huge storm that occurred the previous night causing power outages and downed trees. Extremely thorough, far above our expectations. Spent all the time sitting down with us after to ensure we both understood the report and had our questions answered completely. Gave us great advice. Great integrity. I totally recommend Jim Carlson!

Ryan was outstanding, he had the old door, frame and storm door off and reinstalled new door, frame and storm installed in 4 1/2 hrs. and did a beautiful job, we found the old hardware on the door wouldn't work with the new door, so he went to Home Depot and got a correct one and installed it. I recommend Ryan (Trubuild) highly.

Very Professional, Honest, and Friendly. I did not hire Northface as they informed me repair was not needed at this time nor would it be preventative (that alone speaks volumes to them as a business!). I had Northface come over to inspect a siding issue I was very concerned about. They informed me on the spot it was only cosmetic and further investigated any damage that could have been due to improper installation but everything checked out to be proper. They even inspected other concerns I had of the property and informed me of timing and future options for repair.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mold remediation?

Mold remediation is the process of identifying and removing unhealthy levels of mold that have colonized in a home, office, school or other building. Over time, if untreated, mold can destroy a home by breaking down cellulose-based materials (like wood or ceiling tiles) and causing a slow and messy decay. In the shorter term, a mold infestation can cause severe health problems. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), mold can trigger respiratory problems, nasal and sinus congestion, eye irritation, nose or throat irritation, skin irritations, problems with your nervous system, and aches and pains. Mold inspection and mold remediation are often requested in tandem, although they are two separate services. Nationally, mold inspection costs range from $250 to $300. If mold has been positively identified in your house, either by visual examination or through mold testing, remediation can safely remove it. Properly trained and equipped professionals use specialized equipment (like vacuums and air scrubbers with HEPA filters) to keep mold spores contained while they remove contaminated materials and treat infested areas with antimicrobial spray. A key component to a successful mold remediation after eliminating the mold is ensuring that the water source that caused the mold infestation is also resolved.

How does mold remediation work?

Mold remediation can eliminate mold colonies from your home or business. Mold is a normal part of daily life, but in wet or humid settings mold can quickly colonize and spread by making spores. Whether visible or hidden, untreated mold can cause real health problems and cause extensive (and expensive) damage to your property. Mold remediation involves killing the mold, removing the dead mold and preventing future mold growth. Here is an example of the steps involved in professional mold remediation:

  • Contain work area and apply negative air pressure HEPA air purifiers to prevent cross-contamination. If spores spread, the colonies can easily regrow elsewhere in your home.
  • Mist an EPA-registered antimicrobial to suspend and kill mold spores.
  • Remove affected building surfaces.
  • Bag and dispose of contaminated materials properly.
  • Treat cavities/underlayment and dehumidify.
  • Abrasively remove dead loose mold.
  • Apply EPA-registered protective sealer.
  • Perform clearance testing.

Remove containment materials.

How is a mold test done?

Mold testing can help identify a mold infestation in your home or business. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of test you want done and the number of samples you request. The national average mold inspection cost is $250-$300. The EPA explains that if you have a visible mold problem, in most cases sampling and testing is unnecessary. However, if you have unexplained and potential mold-related illness or can smell mold in your house, mold inspection costs may be a good investment. To avoid unscrupulous testers, the EPA recommends working with a testing agency that adheres to the analytical methods laid out by professional organizations such as the American Industrial Hygiene Association or the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of testing done. Prices can also vary, depending on the size of the home, the number of surface areas to be tested, and the extent of the mold infestation. Here are some examples of mold inspection average costs:

  • Swab testing: $200-$300
    • A professional collects a surface swab from a potentially infested area for testing in a lab. Some professionals have concerns about this being the sole test done because it only gathers a small amount of data from a certain area of the house. That’s why it’s frequently done in conjunction with air cell testing.
  • Air cell testing: $250-$350
    • A professional collects an air sample in the home to measure the amount of mold spores in the air. This test is frequently done in conjunction with swab testing to ensure more complete data. Costs are higher for this test because the equipment required of the contractor is more expensive.
  • Both air cell and swab tests provided by the same company: $400-$600.

How do you get rid of mold?

Mold is a naturally occurring and important part of our ecosystem. That said, excessive mold can actually be hazardous to your health. Mold remediation is usually the best strategy to get rid of unhealthy levels of mold in your home or office. If you’re not comfortable working with mold or the area is larger than 10 square feet (3 feet by 3 feet), it is highly recommended to hire a mold remediation professional to resolve the problem. However, if you’re DIY-savvy, don’t have any health risks, and are not freaked out by mold, the EPA gives homeowners the greenlight to clean mold areas that are less than 10 square feet. Here are some EPA-recommended DIY cleaning tips:

  • Fix plumbing leaks and other water problems as soon as possible. Dry all items completely.
  • Scrub mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry completely.
  • Throw away absorbent or porous materials (like ceiling tiles and carpet) if they become moldy.
  • Avoid exposing yourself or others to mold.
  • Do not paint or caulk moldy surfaces. Clean up the mold and dry the surfaces before painting. Paint applied over moldy surfaces is likely to peel.
  • If you are unsure about how to clean an item (art, fine furniture, etc.) consult a reputable specialist affiliated with a professional organization in their field.

Is mold damage covered by insurance?

Mold damage may or may not be covered by your homeowner's insurance. Mold damage is caused by standing water and excess moisture. Mold damage can be covered by insurance when an item already covered under your homeowners insurance breaks accidentally — for example, if your plumbing suddenly ruptures and water floods your house, the homeowners insurance will cover part or all of the costs for the plumbing repair and any mold remediation costs necessary as a direct result of the water damage.

But you may not be able to get insurance to pay for your mold remediation costs if the damage is a result of your neglect — for example, if you’ve had a slow leak under your bathroom sink for years and have ignored the issue. If the insurer can determine that the mold damage is a result of your negligence, they likely won’t cover mold remediation costs. Also, most homeowners insurance will usually not cover mold remediation costs after a flood unless you have a special insurance rider covering your home in case of a flood. To help prevent mold damage, always keep humidity levels in your house between 30 percent and 60 percent, clean up water spills and damp areas right away, and ensure you have exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom.
