I was incredibly impressed with this plumber. He was able to come out the same day and complete two toilet installs. He was respectful of our home and was very kind to our multiple (and very curious) pets. He completed the work in a timely manner and cleaned up after himself. Quite frankly, his services are a steal! Allen is easy to work with and very knowledgable. In the future, I plan to have some upgrades to my house and he kindly provided some recommendations on contractors and electricians. This spring I will be having a utility tub moved and I plan on contacting Spitfire Plumbing to complete the job.

Needed new soffit board to replace rotting boards above bay window, that also contained a wasp nest or two. He also cleaned rain gutters. Things he did that were great: 1) showed up for initial meeting and to give estimate ON TIME! 2) performed beautiful work over bay window with new soffit boards complete with paint job; and removed wasps nest, 3) reasonably priced for this single-income household, 4) felt totally comfortable with him and appreciated his gracious attitude towards me as a female client. Was not condescending (which is my experience with a few contractors in the past). Will definitely ask him to return to help with more "fixer-upper" jobs as well as some more complex renovations.

Greg Carlson at Gigantous Inc. did a really nice job refinishing a floor for us. He stayed extra late through unanticipated difficulties with the floor and completed the job in very short order to meet a furniture delivery deadline. He is great about keeping up with communications and leaving the work area clean, too. Greg also has both a good sense of fairness and a strong commitment to doing a quality job and shows a desire to meet his customer's expectations. He was knowledgeable in discussing options and flexible in carrying these out. When he is on-site he really works hard. We have had two other services refinish floors for us previously and Greg's work is by far the nicest of the 3 we have had done. I would invite him back for future jobs anytime. By the way, he seems to be pretty knowledgeable about other general home work, too.

I can't say enough good things about Don. It's really rare to find a craftsman these days that takes as much care and pride in his work. Besides coming in right on-budget and on-time, any obstacles encountered were met with a can and will-do attitude. He was completely upfront with his bid and explained in detail what we could expect from him before, during and after the job was complete. Don even taught us a few things. He called if he was running late and worked continuous days until the job was done, right throughout the weekend. He made multiple trips to pick up materials for us and worked really hard to minimize overhead and waste. He kept the work areas clean and when he was done, we couldn't even tell he was there. (Other than having a beautify transformed main floor!) Halfway through the job we were so impressed by Don that we already started referring him to friends and through social media. Some other contractors need to take notes. This is how you do it. This is how you satisfy a customer. Thanks Don! We have you on speed-dial.

I haven't had a lot of experience with contractors but this company was very professional from beginning to end. I had my bathroom remodeled and updated. They arrived to my home within the time frame that was given. They called to let me know when they were on their way. They cleaned up behind themselves and walked through with me and explained everything they did and options if I wished to change anything in the near future. I was so pleased with their work, I'm also getting a barn door installed and I'll be doing another review on how that installation goes as well. Overall, I am very pleased with their service and quality of work.

Julio was great to work with. I was in need of a subcontractor for a big drywall job and he was there to size up the job the next day and got it started immediately. The job was completed way before I thought it would be and the work quality was great. Very enjoyable guy to work with.

To Whom It May Concern: I write this letter in regard to Above All Construction as a general contractor. I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Jaurez on the renovation of our kitchen 2013. I can recommend him highly and without reservation. Mr. Jaurez was directly available throughout the entire process. He handled all communication personally; this made the entire project progress smoothly. Throughout the course of the renovation, Mr. Jaurez was a consummate professional. He was accurate in his initial assessment of the scale and cost of our project. He was absolutely clear in his record keeping. He managed the sub-contractors well, checking completed work and immediately following up with any touch ups needed. Our job was done with care and precision in a timely manner. We are truly enjoying our new kitchen! Penny and Bill Mills

Nick and Top Notch Construction had the flexibility to tailor the roofing contract to the property owner's needs and requests. The work was performed in a timely manner. The estimate was very much within market reason, and his crews could communicate in English with other contractors on site and with the tenants of the property. There was not damage to flower gardens and other vegetation. Well done.

I hired Studio Rebus to replace two doors that were kicked in during a home invasion. Kel created a very detailed budget for the project that my insurance company accepted without question, even though they had originally estimated the project to be much less (not realizing our doors were custom sized). Like most home improvement projects, this one took longer than originally projected, but I would definitely hire Studio Rebus again, for several reasons. First, Kel is responsive. No phone call or email went unreturned. He communicated promptly and thoroughly at every step of the process. Second, Kel's very thorough estimate left no stone unturned, so while our project got delayed because of supplier issues, there were never any surprises in expense. Third, Kel loves this work, and it shows. Unlike handymen I've hired in the past, Kel is very knowledgeable about houses, and lovingly pays attention to form and function and even the most minor finishing detail (as we requested--we were not interested in doing any painting or finishing work ourselves). Fourth, Kel kept our home and garage very tidy during this process, cleaning up after himself each day.

We worked with Deborah Hannon with The Cozy Cottage for a complete remodel of our home. We chose Deb because she promised us that the whole process would be easy because she had a team of contractors that she works with. We are a busy family and didn’t want to be managing our project by ourselves, so this sounded wonderful. It turned out that it was! The contractors that Deb connected us with were a top notch team that communicated with us well, had a commitment of quality, were competitive on cost, and provided an excellent service. As our project grew, each one of them were available to continue and provide great insight to our project and became more than just contractors, but friends that we enjoyed being around and had a great camaraderie with. In addition, Deb really took the time to understand what we wanted in our remodel. She understood that both my husband and my tastes vary, but was able to bring us design options that fit both of our tastes and fit exactly what we were looking for. This process allowed us to continue on our busy lives and make decisions about the project quickly with Deb’s excellent design choices and options. Deb has done so well that we have adopted her into our family as an honorary member. We really truly enjoyed working with her and her ability to take everything we ask and make it happen. I am happy to speak with anybody further if you have any questions.

This is a Handyman Reference for Richard (Rick) Toboz. I have known Rick of nearly 30 years. His expertise in home ownership/handyman repair rivals general contractors. Neighbors, including me, seek his input and sometimes assistance, when tackling home projects. He has the tools and knowledge to fix/repair/build virtually any home project. And I will add he does not use a “that’s good enough” phrase – his projects are ALL completed with an excellent finished touch. I have consulted him on a few projects and would not hesitate to consult nor use him on any future home improvements

Here's my overall experience with Kellington. 1. Chuck responded to my Thumbtack request within 15 minutes. 2. He was able to come over to visit my home for a free bid within two days. 3. He had the bid ready for me by the very next morning. 4. We scheduled it a couple of weeks out due to our availability 5. They said they will begin the work at 9am on a Monday 6. The day of work something came up and I coudn't stay home so I asked my in-laws if they could stay home for the contractors. 7. I was told that they showed up at 9am on the dot, said they could complete the work within 5-6 hours but actually finished everything including the cleanup in under 3.5 hrs and were gone by 12:30pm. 8. When I came home that evening, there was no way for me to know that someone was even there to do work except for the flawlessly repaired ceiling. Needless to say I am beyond impressed with their professionalism, honesty and punctuality and think that there is a small chance they just might be robots... LOL! Kidding aside, I wouldn't think twice before hiring them again and in fact, I have already asked Chuck if he could come by and give me a bid for another job.

I am extremely satisfied with this contractor. Ken, the owner, convinced me to give them a shot after I was discouraged speaking with other contractors. He and Chris were willing to provide me a quote for exactly what I wanted for fair price. Other contractors tried to sell me on products that were either not to my taste or seemed inferior in quality. Homestead let me choose exactly what I wanted. Will did a great job from beginning to end. He answered all my questions and kept me in the loop step-by-step. The tile work on the floor and tub surround looks like a work of art. I would recommend Homestead to anyone who knows what they want and wants it done professionally at a fair price.

I was in a bind after our heavy solid California King headboard and bed frame came out of alignment. Our painter shimmied it away from the wall in order to make room for painting. My spouse was out of town and I needed the bed put back together and moved back against the wall ASAP. He replied quickly and came out the next morning. He had to do some problem solving and did some disassembly and reassembly. Very knowledgeable about other things such as room decor bathroom remodeling and home maintenance in general. We will be calling on him again really soon for our next project!

We had a ugly unfinished basement with a furnace in the middle of the room. After speaking with multiple contractors we selected Dpenn construction. David was able to creat a floor plan to get that out of the way, now we have a beautiful basement (bedroom, washroom, and bathroom with a walk-in shower). David was easy to work with, honest with pricing and scope of work, and we feel like we got a great value out of the work that was done. Would highly recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
