If you are looking for help decorating your house look no further. Stacy is your gal. I refer to her to my friends as the Joanna Gains of MSP for rustic chic (although she can do any aesthetic you are dreaming of)! I hired her to help me furnish and decorate my new construction home. She was always very attentive and had a wonderful game plan to help me tackle such a huge task. She came over and measured my home and took pictures. She then gave me a 3D rendering of my home decorated! It was STUNNING. We then went on several shopping trips to buy the large pieces together. Later on we went on trips to find the perfect accessories at places an interior designer would only know about! Stacy was a great listener and was flexible if any pieces didnt speak to me. She was happy to point out other options that would look just as nice. Finally, Stacy got some amazing designer discounts at the large box stores. On the shopping front Stacy is happy to do as little or as much as you need! She can go with you or tell you what to find, whatever your preference. She is also a master stager and thriftstore expert too! Stacy not only does typical furniture placement, shopping, and decorating...she is also an architect who can make a ton of the creative projects she proposes in your home for you. You don't have to hire yet another person. Wonder woman I tell you!!! Stacy made us a custom mud room bench built in HERSELF. She used reclaimed wood from all over the state and from barns! She also made us a custom chalkboard wall. Stacy's daughter took the pictures for our collage wall that will line our steps, they are the things of dreams! Stacy also picked out a wonderful reclaimed wood wall paper for above the fireplace that is unlike anything I have ever seen. To sum up it Stacy is a joy to work with, she is a friend at this point. She can literally do it all. She is flexible on all counts and can help you as little or as much as you like at a very fair price point. If you haven't already, just hire stay. You won't regret it. -Tory

We contracted Louise in 2015 to aid in the design of our Orono home and create plans and prints. We had a vision of what we wanted and Louise made it a reality. We had multiple revisions and Louise kindly and swiftly catered to our requests. I recommend her services without reservation. Michael R.

Matt was great! He stopped out to the site and immediately began offering ideas and sketched out quick ideas in the initial meeting. A simple suggestion of turning the building's direction on the site made a big difference in how the building would impact and make a statement on first impression! He also offered ideas we hadn't considered. Very professional and talented!

I have had the pleasure of working with Kim for over 15 years. She helps you plan your look or gives you ideas you never thought of yourself. I like how Kim makes suggestions on three different paint colors/schemes that would look great in your room and then you pick the one you like best. Her color schemes and paint colors she picks are always phenomenal. Her ideas are affordable and budget conscious. Kim is great at taking what you have already in your home, and giving you fresh ideas on their placement. I love coming home everyday and a lot of it I contribute to having Kim as my interior designer. I would highly recommend her as your interior designer. Laurie L

Our house was built in 1904 and the kitchen was last undated in the early 70's. Obviously nothing was square and the floors are uneven, but Tom, with the help of his ole man, put in new kitchen. The result beat our expectations. After the kitchen project I had Tom remodel our back porch and put on a new deck in back as well. Tom did a great job setting the expectation on cost and time. I will continue to use Tom for my home improvement needs and have referred him to any of my friends with home improvement projects.

Ashley designed a playroom on my main floor. After viewing the space, she had the design drawn up the next day for me to review and created a Pinterest board of her ideas so I could easily reference it at any time. We ordered the furniture that day and as other items came on sale, Ashley notified me so I could purchase them at a discounted price. I really appreciated her efforts to help me save money where I could. I was also very impressed by her organization, promptness and professionalism. One of the items came damaged and Ashley completely took care of it for me and a replacement was delivered to my house with no hassle. Now that the playroom is finished, I could not be happier with the result! Everyone that comes over comments on how adorable the space is! The colors and style match the rest of my house and layout of the furniture allows for more storage than I could have imagined. I was so thrilled with my experience I am having Ashley work on a new nursery for me. I have no doubt she will dream up another beautiful space!

We needed new architectural site and floor plans for our daycare center. We hired Mr. Mackey and he was wonderful. I met with Mackey and he was on time and always professional. He went over the old plans and drawings and listened to everything I had to say about what I wanted and how I wanted the layout to be. Mr. Mackey drafted up plans that were perfect and I would highly recommend him to others.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
