I had a crumbling sewer line and some weirdly plumbed fixtures in my basement. I was very worried about cost. Steve and his crew worked on it tirelessly and came in very close to their original estimate. The new bathroom looks great and they even cleaned up after themselves. He was straight up with me and kept me informed every step of the way. Can't think of anything negative to say.

I needed drywall on my basement ceiling tapped, mudded and a texture sprayed. Jose responded right away and came over later that day to check out the job. He was very polite and friendly. Jose has went above and beyond what we expected. It was a pleasure working with him and I will for sure pass his name along to anyone who needs drywall services.

I used Mike and his team to help in a desperate situation when my basement flooded when my home was under contact to be sold. He gave me top notch responsiveness and service. The unfortunate thing was that he insisted insurance would cover everything, but they didn't because it was considered flood when water came through the basement window. I moved forward thinking it would be covered, but got that surprise a few days later. The price was high but I felt confident in the work they were doing. I had to have the guys come back to finish something that wasn't done fully/ correctly and they left the place pretty dusty, not cleaned up well. Overall I think this is a great company with fabulous integrity and they really want to do the right thing.

Initially hired Mickey and asst to bring new table saw (366 lbs.) from garage where delivered to my basement workshop. So please by effort and result increased scope (and doubled cost) by having them assemble saw and have requested them back for a much larger job involving a major internal household move and the addition of 220v outlets.

We hired Matt to finish our basement into a living space with a bedroom and bathroom. His bid was very thorough and during it he took the time to walk through the best way to set up our vision, such as the bathroom layout, what size of window we needed to get for the bedroom, the bedroom layout with the closet, etc. Throughout the entire process he added great suggestions and new ideas that helped us get exactly what we were wanting. We added the addition of a bar towards the end of the project and Matt went above and beyond to accommodate the changes and stay with the timeline. Matt was on site almost daily to check in and address any questions we had. His crew was great and we are very happy with the end results! We will definitely use Mateo Homes again if we have any other remodels in the future!

I had a great experience with Hunny Do Handyman Services. They are very good carpenters with an ability to do everything. They initially came out for some trim carpentry work which they finished quickly and then stayed to hang an outdoor light fixture and do some ceiling tile repairs in our basement. We asked them to do a larger deck re-construction job which we had been struggling to get done for 2 months. They built a really solid deck at a reason price within a few days. They we timely, reliable and easy to work with. We are extremely happy with our experience and look forward to hiring them again for future projects.

What impressed me most was he came to work on the second day even though he was ill. I do recommend him and would rehire him any time going forward.

We had a window well that flooded water into our basement and we were under a lot of stress trying to figure out what to do with it. The last time something like that happen we had a contractor come out and dry out the carpet but leave the pad wet and basically ruined our pad. I was referred to yeti restoration and they came out and were very professional gave me a good price and could do the work the same day to prevent further damage. I actually trusted this company to be be there with my wife and kids without me there. That says a lot! I refer yeti restoration to everybody now!

Our first plumber quit in the middle of replacing our sewer lines. Phillip came in, to what seemed like an impossible situation, and was able to fix mistakes made by the first plumber and finish the job. He was very pleasant and did a great job. Thanks Phillip.

I required help in looking over my old computer monitor as it had a number of issues: slow, glitchy screen etc. They went through every trouble shooting method known to mankind but the computer was just too far gone to save. However, and this is important they helped me look at what the options are and didn't just leave me hanging. To give you all some idea my computer was in the basement and it turned out most of the internal systems in the tower were fried BADLY. My point being that they were very professional and gracious even in the worst computer situations. I am VERY VERY satisfied with their service and will come to them again every time. Five stars all the way.

Toby Heath was recommended by Jeff Basler for the work I needed done and I would recommend him highly. His work was completed in a professional manner, on time, for a reasonable rate, and looks wonderful. He replaced my front door, my french doors to my patio, and an interior door at the foot of the basement stairs. They all look great!

We had them paint rooms, repair beams in our basement and install new supports/piers. Install doors and door knobs on all our new interior doors. They went above and beyond. Very professional and meticulous and they even stayed late into the evening hours to get the job finished as promised. Highly recommended!!!!

I first met Mr Sosa at one of the Kansas City home shows in the year 2010 upon meeting him understanding his services ,set appointment to meet at my residence to review my planned project. Once upon meeting , reviewing and evaluating, my husband and I agreed to hire Mr Sosa to refinish our basement. The plan was submitted to us, we agreed on Mr Sosa evaluation and ideas, and the project began and was completed in a very timely, professional and cost effective manner. To this day we are enjoying our beautiful new basement to entertain our family and friends. Sosa painting and remodeling continued throughout our residence with various other performances including exterior restoration work , irrigation and installation of fence. Sosa painting and remodelings level of expertise and professionalism was above and beyond. Sosa painting and remodeling perform various other projects for our neighbors as well. During the time that Sosa painting and remodeling was on our Block, was approximately 6 weeks. Then Mr Sosa and his crew continued onward to our daughters home, which they performed an exterior restoration of their home.the level of experience was very helpful to establish the bare minimum of expense to perform all projects. I continue to use Sosa painting and remodeling for our maintenance needs. I would highly recommend Mr Sosa and his company to anyone that would have anything from a small project to a large renovation project.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
