Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want.

Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June.

Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

How many photos should you get from a wedding photographer?

A professional wedding photographer will usually supply their clients with several hundred photos (200, 300, 400 or 800 and more). Some might even provide more than 1,000 photos. It ultimately depends on the photographer.

Wedding photographers will usually take several thousand photos but cut them down to the keepers. They also have to edit these photos. Typically, they will provide them to the clients on a digital hard drive, as an online download or even in a photo album with beautiful decorations.

What pictures should be taken at a wedding?

On your wedding day, your photographer should take pictures of the couple getting ready for the wedding, as well as a fun personality picture before activities begin. They should also photograph showstoppers like the bouquet, invitations, shoes, reception space, cake, centerpieces, rings and the veil. A generational photo with parents or grandparents is also special. There should also be photos of the bride and groom alone, the ceremony, the confetti-filled exit, and hair and makeup.

How long do wedding photographers stay?

A wedding photographer usually expects to work a full day. This gives them time to photograph the venue, cake, rings, shoes, centerpieces, invitations and other aspects of the wedding before the guests arrive. It also allows them time to get photos of the bride and groom alone, as well as the hair and makeup process and fun personality pictures. Then, they will work through all the parts of the wedding.

When should you take wedding photos?

Couples can take wedding photos before their actual ceremony, during cocktail hour (before the reception), during the wedding reception or even after their wedding. The least stressful time to do it is often before the ceremony when hair and makeup generally look their best, temperatures are usually lower because it’s earlier in the day and the couple won’t have to think or worry about it for the rest of the day.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

We hired Juliana as our wedding photographer and the whole experience was WONDERFUL. Not only did we plan a wedding in less than a month, giving her very short notice, but we also asked to tweak our timeframe and venue after hiring her. She was so gracious, flexible and accommodating. She is a very busy woman, but was so easy to get ahold of!! We communicated multiple times prior to my wedding day regarding my vision for the photographs. She captured my intimate rooftop wedding perfectly. Everyone felt instantly comfortable with her (family, friends, kids), which allowed her to capture special candid moments that we will cherish forever. We loved her so much that we will be hiring her again in the Spring for our reception! I highly recommend working with her.

I hired him for a Covid Small Wedding. He was quick and responsive. I had my photos in less than a week from when I took them. Captured my favorite moments of my favorite people without having to say much. I appreciate the quality of photos and the amount of photos I received. Plus the ability to capture the moment without drawing attention away. I can’t wait to use his service for future projects

We loved having Risa as our photographer for our Civil Wedding Ceremony. I appreciated that she had gone to the venue a few days before to check out the surroundings for our first look and couple photos. She also incorporated many of the shots I had sent examples of. The combination of her positive energy and professionalism is exactly what we were looking for!

We are so happy that we chose Tommy to be our photographer on our wedding day! It was clear after our first meeting with him that he loves what he does. Our wedding was actually a surprise wedding, so guests thought they were at our engagement party. This required a lot of moving parts and special requests for what was being captured during the series of events that lead up to the reveal. Tommy was on board from the beginning and helped us figure out the perfect timeline to make it all work. Tommy is an easy going and friendly guy which made it easy to be comfortable taking pictures. We truly felt like we made a good friend by the end of the night. We have enjoyed all of our photos and cannot recommend him enough!

Our family’s experience working with Ross on our daughter’s wedding was absolutely wonderful!! Ross communicated with us prior to the special day, just as he said he would. He arrived ahead of schedule the day of the event and stayed even longer than expected, in order to accommodate our wishes! The amazing value we received from the wedding photographs he captured was without a doubt one of the best in Kansas City, and we are looking forward to hiring him for our next event...well done Ross!!!

I planned on my wedding a few weeks before the actual event and I was stressed on whether I can get a photographer with my limited budget and time. I searched for a photographer in Google and found this app. Did my inquiry and Dany responded within 24hrs and tight gave me many options and great packages. He was very responsive all throughout the weeks until the event. He showed up 30mins before the event and started doing his work. I booked for certain amount of hours but he was very professional and very nice enough to cater with what we wanted and stayed longer than what we booked very flexible! I highly recommend Dany. Pictures were great! He made our wedding extra special and memorable!

Ross was very responsive each and every time I contacted him and came early to the event to set up for his shots and assess the lighting for the chapel. It would also have been nice to see all of the photos (not just the edited ones) but we got at least one of each of the poses/pictures we were wanting, so this was a small issue. The quality of the photos we received was excellent. We got the edited photos back in about a week, which was so nice to be able to see them so quickly after the wedding. The value we got using Ross was really very good, so it is hard to complain about anything. I would definitely hire him again for another event.

Ross was hired with very short notice for a small family wedding and the whole experience was wonderful. He was punctual, gracious and very professional throughout our time together. He ensured we had great shots of the bride and groom as well as family members in attendance. Our photos were returned to us expeditiously and we are honestly so in love with them. We would certainly hire him again.

Thomas photographed our wedding and he did an AMAZING job! Our pictures came out amazing and he helped guide us as to what pictures to take. He did not miss a picture on our big day. He went above and beyond for us. He made sure everyone was in order and helped without even being asked to do so. I would hire him again and again!

David was absolutely amazing!! He was very personable and knowledgeable about the wedding process which was so helpful because we are not. We met him for a get to know you meeting before the big day and he was easy going and great to talk to. On the day, he was on time. He was patient and kind and had a great arsenal of photos to take. He helped keep us on track and was instrumental in keeping me from melting down on several occasions. The photo we’ve already seen was phenomenal and I can’t wait to see more of his work! He was such a joy to work with and I truly feel like we made a friend through this whole experience. If you want the total package look no further! Selby films will make your day perfect.
