Introduction

Listening House Piano Studios is one of the most unique in the entire St. Louis area. True, we concentrate on mastering solid reading skills, but also chording, composing songs, improvising, and playing various styles of music, including classical and pop. I have high standards for students, but we also have fun using the best traditional techniques plus technology. The result is music education that produces masterful piano playing and lasts a lifetime. I have many years experience teaching in two prestigious schools as well as in my own business. I had the opportunity to take lessons at Listening House for over a year before I went off to study music in college. I had taken lessons before, but since then it had been two years without them. Mrs. Barfield was able to really help me get back on track with my technique and my reading. In the months before I left the studio to go off to college, we studied technique and we worked on preparing me for college level piano classes. We wanted to test out of as many group piano classes possible to save time and money. I was able to test out of the first two classes and, with her help, I also got out of the first theory class at the college. Overall, my experience at Listening House was the best piano teaching experience I have had as a student. Not only do I fee like I have learned a lot. But I have gained a good friend and mentor in Mrs. Barfield, and for that I am so very grateful.

My 7-year old son adores his piano lessons at Listening House! Rhonda uses a creative, playful, and well-rounded approach to teaching, which allows children to feel joy and confidence in making music. Not only does she have excellent methods for teaching piano to youngsters (using games, movement activities, and technology), but she also encourages children to compose songs of their own. We've had several other piano teachers, and none have come even close to comparing to Rhonda.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Before beginning lessons, I offer a no-cost consultation to evaluate playing skills or potential, discuss goals, and explain Listening House Piano Studios' unique offerings. This helps the student, the family, and me to feel comfortable working together.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.A. in Music Education from Culver-Stockton College, four years of graduate-level lessons, four years experience teaching piano in the Truman State University Preparatory Program in Kirksville, Missouri, and four years experience with Beverly Milder's Musical Arts in Chesterfield, Missouri. I've operated my own in-home studio for 10 years. I also homeschooled all four of my children K-12 (and taught them music), and one is now my oldest son is a Nashville-based full-time keyboard player.
