Introduction: Hello, and thanks for stopping by! I am a long-time guitar hobbyist and I recently decided to take my first steps towards building a guitar lesson business. I have been playing guitar actively since 2014, and although I did take lessons for a few years, I am largely self-taught. Over the years, I have encountered many excellent books and websites that have allowed me to expand my guitar playing at my own pace. As a teacher, I view it as my mission to help my students learn not only learn the fundamentals of guitar and music theory, but also to develop a passion for the limitless possibilities of the instrument. Finding a guitar teacher you are compatible with can be very tricky, and I know this from personal experience. In my personal experiences, I have encountered a great deal of guitar teachers who are very talented at their instrument, but are lacking in the emotional and social skills that are (in my opinion) necessary for a mentor-mentee relationship to develop. I found that my previous guitar teachers often wanted me to learn guitar exactly the way they were taught how to play, rather than encouraging me to play creatively. I believe that creativity is the key element to all great music and all successful musicians. As a teacher, I view it is my responsibility to learn and appreciate the type of music my students are interested in. There are many techniques that are very important to certain genres of guitar music, but are not required at all in other genres. For that reason, my lessons are designed to give you a basic foundation that you can apply to any genre of guitar music. Then, we will focus on practicing the specific techniques you will need to play the music you are most interested in. The one thing you will learn is that there are no rules as to what makes guitar playing "good" - it is all about the kind of noise you want to make! I plan on charging $30 for a one hour lesson. In my experience, one hour is the ideal length. We will try to structure the lesson with 30 minutes dedicated to review and discussing that day's techniques. The last 30 minutes of every lesson will be dedicated to practicing a song that you (the student) select. I use a primary tablature based approach for lessons, and I have access to thousands of song tabs through subscription services. To give you an example of how a typical lesson will be structured, we may spend the first 30 minutes of the lesson discussing a basic concept (such as moveable chord forms), and then the last 30 minutes learning a song you've selected (e.g., "Bullet" by The Misfits, "Zero" by Smashing Pumpkins, "Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran - whatever you want if we agree that it is in your skill level!). To me, this system is ideal for quickly developing a repertoire of songs you love, rather than just memorizing the (in my opinion) rather boring exercises that are traditionally taught to beginning guitarists. We will only learn "Greensleeves" if that is what YOU want to learn! I am currently planning on charging $30 maximum for a one hour lesson, but I may change the rate depending on unanticipated costs or demand.
