Would not hire — sales tactics over substance

I found this contractor through Thumbtack and contacted him for a bathroom repair. He was very quick to produce a first bid, which I appreciated at first. But the process raised enough concerns that I decided not to move forward.

The bid was built entirely from photos, without much attention to the specific scope of work I had described. When I asked him to visit the property to understand the job better, he responded by sending an invoice charging me a fee just to come look at it — something I hadn't encountered before and didn't expect for a job of this size.

The pricing approach also gave me pause. Rather than a clear, firm number, I was offered a series of stacked discounts. At one point he asked about my religion in order to apply an additional discount, which I did not feel was appropriate to a business transaction.

I want to be fair: he was responsive and quick. My feedback is offered constructively, in the hope it's useful. In my experience, customers tend to trust a straightforward, firm quote based on an actual understanding of the job more than layered discounts or fees to provide an estimate. A no-charge walkthrough to confirm scope, and a single clear price, would go a long way. I wish him well.
