Denny Alberts is the best golf instructor I have worked with in over 40 years as a golfer. He can teach either by diagnosing problems and fixing them or by constructing a golf swing from the ground up. He takes his students as he finds them and leaves them far better golfers than they could have imagined. He is a great diagnostician, is completely open minded but as knowledgeable as one can be about the physics and biomechanics of the golf swing. And he loves to teach. He views teaching as fun and educational for him. He loves to share and to bring his students along. He has an unbelievably large collection of teaching aids and his approach is to use the aids to make it impossible for you to do anything but swing correctly. Then he wants you to learn what the correct swing feels like. Feel from proper mechanics. I have been a low handicap golfer all my life but i have never hit the ball better than I have since working with Denny. The very best.

Matt is an excellent teacher and a pleasure to work with. I have taken lessons from several pro's and Matt is definitely at the top. He has the right balance between getting you a "quick fix" while at the same time giving you smaller steps to fix the root cause. I would recommend Matt to both low and high handicappers.

I give lessons to all ages and all swings. No experience of the game is needed, you just need to bring a willing attitude and your clubs. The fun of the game will take care of the rest.

Couple things: I am not a PGA professional. If you require PGA professional services there are a lot of good ones in St Louis. What I do is pass on the instruction that was taught to me. And I'm a excellent golfer and teacher and truly enjoy watching a good golf swing develop. I instruct the basics..a very solid foundation of the basics..period. From foot work, grip , setup, weight distribution, mental midget-ness ( in my opinion all big issues with most) etc. I cover 'em all. My fee is $30/session and generally last until attendee says 'uncle'! I have always maintained that if I cannot help your game, there is no fee! Also if you have a friend that's interested..same fee for two! Briefly, initially a couple of meetings is pretty much all that is needed, along with your desire to practice, and then your own skill and uniqueness develop. After those first few meetings, and following the instruction given, just a good eye every now and then is all that is needed. Sometimes bad habits return! I prefer a field or a very open driving range ( I have plenty of shag balls ) for a number of reasons: first, I need to get my point(s) across and sometimes that interferes with other folks, and secondly who plays golf using an artificial surface! If you know of a field etc close by and that is convenient to you let me know, as the sign says..'have horse will travel' ! Or, let me know the nearest driving range to you..same horse! Thanks and I look forward to helping in achieving your goals. Doug.'s not the enjoyment I get rather the enjoyment the individual gets when able to play the game consistently without frustration. As was with my uncle ( who played with and instructed the great ones of his time..Light Horse Harry Cooper, Ray Gates the Golfing Cop, etc the stories were endless) his greatest achievement had been teaching his nieces and nephews, all excellent golfers. And for me my nieces and nephews!! and now my GREAT nieces and nephews!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What makes a good golf instructor?

A good golf instructor is someone who has the playing skill you’d like to achieve, is qualified to teach golf, and is someone you can get along with. Some experts recommend you only take golf lessons from coaches with active accreditation from reputable associations such as the PGA, LPGA, or similar organizations that focus on continuing education. You’ll be spending hours out on the green with the pro during lessons, so a good rapport, strong communication and the right personality fit are key. A proven track record is also important. Read reviews from their current and former students to make sure they have helped people achieve their golfing goals, and always ask about the instructor’s experience before signing on for lessons. Years of providing lessons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to teach the sport. Just because your friend or partner is great at golf doesn’t mean they’ll give good golf lessons. Invest in a professional golf instructor who knows how to teach the sport from short game to full swing.

What age should you start golf lessons?

Golf lessons for kids can start as early as age four or five. They’re too young for formal training, but you can keep them interested and engaged and give them a feel for the game. U.S. Kids Golf recommends starting formal training for junior golfers at six years old. It’s important for young golfers to swing clubs that are the right length and weight for their body; U.S. Kids Golf provides a fitting guide.

Golf lessons for kids, especially young kids, should be about encouraging success rather than correcting mistakes, according to U.S. Kids Golf. If you want your child to love golf for life, you want their early experiences to be positive. Golf lessons for kids are less expensive than golf lessons for adults. A monthly rate (including four lessons) for group golf lessons for kids may average $100. Semi-private golf lessons for kids may range from $150 to $200 per month. Location and instructor reputation can also affect cost. Often, discounts are provided when multiple months are purchased at one time.

    How much are golf lessons?

Golf lessons are a great way to break into the sport or take your golf game to a new level. The national average cost for golf lessons is $50-$60, but prices will vary based on what type of lessons you want. The most expensive golf lessons will be private instruction with top-tier coaches. These are golf instructors who have held high professional ranking and have a good reputation. Regardless of who is teaching, private instruction is always more costly than couples’ lessons or small group lessons (usually up to four people). Teachers often offer a lower price per lesson when you buy a package of several lessons at one time. Here are some examples of average golf lesson costs:

    • Individual lessons:
      • Standard pricing for 60-minute private lesson: $60.
      • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $100.
    • Couples’ lessons:
      • Standard pricing for 90-minute duo lesson: $100.
      • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $125.
    • Golf lesson package pricing:
      • Purchase six individual lessons at one time and save $10.
      • Purchase 10 individual lessons at one time and save $40.
      • Purchase six couples’ lessons at one time and save $40.
      • Purchase 10 couples’ lessons at one time and save $200.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
